Alternate bearing in Californian pears and avocados AgEcon
Allen, Roy E.; Perloff, Jeffrey M..
This paper develops a test for the presence of alternate bearing and a means of consistently estimating yields for crops whose output varies from year to year for reasons not fully captured by available biological and economic variables. Using these techniques one can better forecast yields than one can using previous methods. This approach is illustrated for the California Bartlett pear and avocado industries.

Consumers' Willingness to Pay for Treatment-Induced Quality Attributes in Anjou Pears AgEcon
Zhang, Huifang; Gallardo, Rosa Karina; McCluskey, Jill J.; Kupferman, Eugene M..
Ethylene treatments provide an effective method for shortening post-harvest ripening periods for winter Anjou pears and allow market availability throughout the year. However, pear quality may vary under different treatments. A sensory experiment and a consumer survey including questions that address valuation, assessments of sensory characteristics, purchasing habits, and demographics were conducted. Analyses indicate that treatment-induced quality losses significantly affect consumers’ willingness to pay (WTP). Mean WTP for each treatment reveals that consumers prefer pears with a six-day ethylene treatment and are willing to pay a premium of $0.25/pound compared to the market price.

Relationship of Pears’ Dielectric Properties and Rates of Pears’ Bruise CIGR Journal
Azadbakht, Mohsen; Mahmoodi, Mohammad Javad; Vahedi Torshizi, Mohammad; Asghartabar Kashi, Peyman.
Nowadays, dielectric materials, as one of the nondestructive methods, have drawn the researchers’ attention to their diverse array of advantages to the other methods. Before loading and storage, 120 pears were examined under CT-Scan and 81 pears with zero bruise were selected followed by subjecting them to quasi-static and dynamic loading and a 10 day storage period was chosen to investigate the bruise levels and their relationships with dielectric constant. At the end of the storage period, the fruits were measured in their dielectric constant after their bruise levels were determined in CT-Scans. The measurements were undertaken in capacitor plate distances of 8, 11 and 14 cm for input voltages of 6, 10 and 14 V and input voltage frequencies of 20, 60...
