Risk of peritonitis during peritoneal dialysis in carriers of Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Batalha,J. E. N.; Caramori,J. C. T.; Corrente,J. E.; Montelli,A. C.; Barretti,P.; Cunha,M. L. R. S..
The presence of Staphylococcus aureus in the nasal cavities and pericatheter skin of peritoneal dialysis patients put them at high risk of developing peritonitis. However, it is not clear whether the presence of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) in the nasal passages and skin of patients is related to subsequent occurrence of peritoneal infection. The aim of the present study was to verify the relationship between endogenous sources of S. aureus and CNS and occurrence of peritonitis in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis. Thirty-two patients on peritoneal hemodialysis were observed for 18 months. Staphylococcus species present in their nasal passage, pericatheter skin and peritoneal effluent were identified and compared based on drug...

Scintigraphic diagnosis of infectious complications in renal failure patients undergoing hemodialysis, continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis or renal transplant BABT
Vicente,Ana María García; Solís,Sebastián Ruiz; Castrejón,Angel Soriano; García,Víctor Manuel Poblete; Rubio,Maria del Prado Talavera; Marina,Sonia Rodado; Romera,Montserrat Cortés.
Patients with end-stage renal disease have two therapeutic options, dialysis and renal transplantation. Infectious complications occurring in such patients will not only condition the effectiveness of such treatments, but are among the main causes of morbidity and mortality in such cases. Knowledge of the advantages and limitations of nuclear techniques is essential for management of these conditions.

Peritonitis due to Penicillium and Enterobacter in a patient receiving continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis BJID
Böhlke,Maristela; Souza,Person Antunes de; Menezes,Adriane Maria Delgado; Roth,Juliana Martino; Kramer,Luiz Roberto.
Infectious peritonitis is a common complication of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). Polymicrobial peritonitis accounts for about 8% of the peritonitis episodes and involves fungi in 9% to 33% of cases. We report the known first case of polymicrobial peritonitis in which Penicillium sp. was one of the organisms cultured and the ninth case of Penicillium peritonitis in CAPD.

Nutritional status and body composition after 6 months of patients switching from continuous ambulatorial peritoneal dialysis to automated peritoneal dialysis BJMBR
Garcia-Lopes,M.G.; Agliussi,R.G.; Avesani,C.M.; Manfredi,S.R.; Bazanelli,A.P.; Kamimura,M.A.; Draibe,S.A.; Cuppari,L..
Our objective was to determine if automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) leads to changes in nutritional parameters of patients treated by continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). Twenty-six patients (15 males; 50.5 ± 14.3 years) were evaluated during CAPD while training for APD and after 3 and 6 months of APD. Body fat was assessed by the sum of skinfold thickness and the other body compartments were assessed by bioelectrical impedance. During the 6-month follow-up, 12 patients gained more than 1 kg (GW group), 8 patients lost more than 1 kg (LW group), and 6 patients maintained body weight (MW group). Except for length on dialysis that was longer for the LW group compared with the GW group, no other differences were found between the groups at...

Prognostic factors in patients undergoing early-start peritoneal dialysis within 24 h after catheter insertion BJMBR
Jiang,Hong Ying; Huang,Dan Ju; Bai,Yi Hua; Li,Ji Sai; Pi,Hong Yan; Chen,Jing; Li,Luo Hua; Li,Jing.
This study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics, prognosis, and factors for survival of patients who underwent early-start peritoneal dialysis (PD) within 24 h after catheter insertion three years after PD. This study was conducted from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2017. All adult patients who were diagnosed with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and underwent PD for the first time within 24 h after catheter insertion in our hospital were included. All patients with PD were followed-up until they withdrew from PD, switching to hemodialysis, were transferred to other medical centers, underwent renal transplantation, died or were lost to follow-up, or continued to undergo dialysis until the end of the study period. The follow-up observation...

Comparison of three PET methods to assess peritoneal membrane transport BJMBR
Romani,RF.; Waniewski,J.; Kruger,L.; Lindholm,B.; Nascimento,M.M..
The peritoneal equilibration test (PET) is the most widespread method for assessing water and solute transport across the peritoneal membrane. This study compared three methods: traditional PET (t-PET), mini-PET, and modified PET (mod-PET). Non-diabetic adults (n=21) who had been on peritoneal dialysis (PD) for at least three months underwent t-PET (glucose 2.5%-4 h), mini-PET (glucose 3.86%-1 h), and mod-PET (glucose 3.86%-4 h) to determine dialysate-to-plasma concentration ratio (D/P) for creatinine and dialysate-to-baseline dialysate concentration ratio (D/D0) for glucose. Agreement between methods regarding D/P creatinine and D/D0 glucose was assessed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson's correlation coefficient, and Bland-Altman analysis. D/P...
