Seasonal abundance of the Neotropic Cormorant (Phalacrocorax brasilianus) at Lagoa dos Patos estuary, Southern Brazil Hornero
Barquete,Viviane; Vooren,Carolus Maria; Bugoni,Leandro.
Censuses of the Neotropic Cormorant (Phalacrocorax brasilianus) were carried out at a power tower near the mouth of Lagoa dos Patos estuary, southern Brazil, from November 2001 to October 2002. At this major roosting site, a total of 309 counts over 47 days of census were performed to estimate monthly variation in the abundance of the Neotropic Cormorant. The highest abundance occurred in January (1390 birds), and the lowest in May (117 birds). The tower was a roosting site for cormorants at night, which arrived around 15:30 h onward, with numbers increasing near dusk. Birds preferentially used the lower levels of the tower (including the concrete base and levels 1 and 2) throughout the year and this preference could be partially due to strong winds in the...

Branco,Joaquim Olinto.
The Neotropic cormorant is one of the most comm on estuarine birds along SantaCatarina's shore, especially in artisanal fishery areas, where it obtains food easily. During the period from January, 1996 to December, 1999, and of January to December, 2001, the cormorants were monitored monthly in the estuary. The population P. brasilianus (Gmelin, 1789) presented seasonal changes with the same annual pattern of increment of the abundance. Significant differences were recorded between the seasons and the medium abundance of birds. Those differences can be attributed to the events of the life cicle of the species and the oscillations in the estuary water temperature.

Playful birds: cormorants and herons play with objects and practice their skills Biota Neotropica
Sazima,Ivan.
Play is a behaviour known mostly for mammals, although birds are recorded to play as well. Here I describe the play behaviour for two bird species, the Neotropic Cormorant (Phalacrocorax brasilianus) and the Green Heron (Butorides striata) in southeastern Brazil. Juvenile and adult cormorants were recorded to manipulate sticks, leaves, rootlets, and plant debris while on the ground. They also played with sticks, leaves, pods, and plant debris, as well as live or dead fish while in the water, repeatedly grabbing the object and submerging it. When the object was a fish, they tossed it in the air as well. Juvenile herons played with small pieces of wood, fruits, and other floating objects, which they picked up and tossed repeatedly in the water. The...
