Searching Explanations of Nature in the Mirror World of Math Ecology and Society
Scheffer, Marten; Wageningen Agricultural University; Marten.Scheffer@wur.nl.
Despite the huge scientific progress of the last century, the dynamics of complex systems such as the atmosphere, human societies, and ecosystems remain difficult to understand and predict. Nonetheless, our ability to carve the future depends largely on our insight into the functioning of such complex systems. Complex systems are the focus of considerable mathematical theory. Rather than referring to any particular part of the world, such theory addresses what seems to be another world: a world of strange attractors, catastrophe folds, torus destruction, and homoclinic bifurcations. So disparate is the language and notation in this discipline that it is hard to imagine that it has any thing to do with reality as we know it. Indeed, it deals with a kind of...

1. IBSS Repository

Climate impact on long-term changeability of the black sea bioluminescence field and plankton community characteristics. IBSS Repository
Tokarev, Yu.; Mel'nikov, V.; Burmistrova, N.; Belokopytov, V.; Temnykh, A..
Researches in the bioluminescence field vertical structure, amplitude characteristics and spatial distribution in the Black Sea have been conducted in IBSS, NAS of Ukraine, from up to the present time. Enough evidencies are available to testify dramatic changes in different Black sea ecosystem components including bioluminescence field parameters, which took place last decades. But still there is no direct answer to the question about the reasons for such transformations, as variability of the Black Sea biophysical (bioluminescence) and biological characteristics at the climatic time scales, i.e. at the scale of decade periods are not sufficiently studied now. The most pronounced changes in vertical structure of the bioluminescence field are observed in...

Influence of seamounts at the Atlantic Ocean on modification of the bioluminiscence and plankton characteristics IBSS Repository
Tokarev, Yu. N.; Bityukov, E. P.; Williams, R..
The bioluminescence and plankton characteristics in the euphotic layer over 11 seamounts in the Atlantic Ocean were studied. Investigations were carried out along the axis of flow over the mounts. Bathyphotometric measurements (1606 casts) were taken from 2 m to 100 m depths at 87 stations over the various seamounts with a vertical resolution of 1 m. Plankton samples were taken with Juday nets and submersible electric pumps with 36 m3• •h-1 performance. The bioluminescence characteristics varied over seamounts with different geomorphological features. The hydrodynamic gyres, created by the bottom elevations, and the upwelling of water with biogenic elements, also seem to have effects on the quantitative characteristics of the plankton. The largest changes...

IBSS Repository

IBSS Repository

Nouvelles perspectives ArchiMer
Wacquet, Guillaume; Grosjean, Philippe; Colas, Florent; Hamad, Denis; Artigas, Luis Felipe.
The coupled system FlowCAM/ZooPhytoImage has become a real operational tool in 2014. However, to be fully adapted to the observations of phytoplankton performed in the context of the REPHY observation network and in order to better respond to present and future requests concerning the evaluation of quality of coastal and marine waters within the European requirements, such as the WFD and MSFD, new functionalities must be integrated into existing tools. Therefore, different axis of development have been proposed by UMONS and Ifremer to adapt both the digitization device and the Zoo/PhytoImage software to the constraints defined by the REPHY. First, version 5 of Zoo/PhytoImage contains recent innovations such as the development of routines to automatically...

Koutsikopoulos, Constantin; Petitgas, Pierre.
It is often necessary to sub-sample plankton samples even if the precision of the estimation is thereby decreased. A methodological optimization is looked for. The variance depends on the procedure of construction of the aliquot (strategy) and the number of individuals counted (effort). The sub-sampling effort is allocated in a general context of repartition of the total effort between sampling and sub-sampling. This effort depends on the time consumed by the sub-sampling procedure, the volume of the aliquot and the number of individuals counted. For the same effort, a systematic procedure for the construction of sub-samples is more precise than a random one because it travels through the entire sample and is thus less dependent on the spatial distribution...

Surveillance Écologique et Halieutique Site de Gravelines. Novembre 2014 - Octobre 2015 ArchiMer
Antajan, Elvire; Lefebvre, Alain; Loots, Christophe; Rocroy, Mélanie; Ruellet, Thierry.
This is the 38th annual surveillance report concerning the nuclear power plant of Gravelines. Its very high power level results from six plant units located on the shore and is characterised by a cooling system with a coastal surface input and output. The production of electricity began in 1980 and reached maximum in 1986. Surveys concern monitoring of pelagic system (hydrology, microbiology, phytoplankton, and zooplankton), fish populations (larvae and eggs of Sole and Sprat) or crustaceans (shrimps), and benthic macrofauna (intertidal and subtidal). This survey deals with spatial and temporal approaches (i) study of the direct impact by comparison of the input and output seawater stations, (ii) study of medium and long term evolution of the area by...

Pelagic habitat: exploring the concept of good environmental status ArchiMer

Marine environmental legislation is increasingly expressing a need to consider the quality of pelagic habitats. This paper uses the European Union marine strategy framework to explore the concept of good environmental status (GES) of pelagic habitat with the aim to build a wider understanding of the issue. Pelagic ecosystems have static, persistent and ephemeral features, with manageable human activities primarily impacting the persistent features. The paper explores defining the meaning of "good", setting boundaries to assess pelagic habitat and the challenges of considering habitat biodiversity in a moving medium. It concludes that for pelagic habitats to be in GES and able to provide goods and services to humans, three conditions should be met: (i) all...

In this paper we review the technologies available to make globally quantitative observations of particles in general—and plankton in particular—in the world oceans, and for sizes varying from sub-microns to centimeters. Some of these technologies have been available for years while others have only recently emerged. Use of these technologies is critical to improve understanding of the processes that control abundances, distributions and composition of plankton, provide data necessary to constrain and improve ecosystem and biogeochemical models, and forecast changes in marine ecosystems in light of climate change. In this paper we begin by providing the motivation for plankton observations, quantification and diversity qualification on a global scale. We...

Pre- and post-settlement events in benthic community dynamics ArchiMer
Fraschetti, S; Giangrande, A; Terlizzi, A; Boero, F.
In all marine benthic environments, organism replacement depends on recruitment limitation, i.e. the impact of both pre- and post-settlement events on the success of recruitment. The relative contribution of pre- versus post-settlement processes in shaping adult populations has been extensively studied. Most analyses concluded that recruitment limitation is a strong determinant of adults' density. The magnitude of its limitation depends on context, varies with species, and can be strongly modified by all the events preceding and following recruitment itself. A comparison of the outcome of recruitment limitation on hard- and soft-bottom communities has often been neglected. The rules governing these two environments, in both the inter- and the subtidal,...

Analysis of time series of planktonic communities in the Adriatic Sea: Distinguishing between natural and man-induced changes ArchiMer
Solic, M; Krstulovic, N; Marasovic, I; Baranovic, A; Pucherpetkovic, T; Vucetic, T.
Time series (> 20 years) of bacterioplankton, phytoplankton and zooplankton abundances and of phytoplankton production in the Adriatic Sea were analysed. Multivariate methods were used to extract the main patterns of year-to-year changes in abundances (Principal Component Analysis), and to discriminate between years and sites (Multidimensional Scaling). Increasing long-term trends were established for planktonic abundances and phytoplankton production in both coastal and open sea areas, presumably as a result of eutrophication processes. In the open sea, natural factors (water exchange between the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas, and temperature) were dominant in controlling year-to-year fluctuations of plankton. On the other hand, long-term...

Blanchard, Michel.
This document is the third volume of a bibliographical survey of some of the species studied by IFREMER Brest's Coastal Environment Department (DEL) on a regular basis. The studied animals are a selection of characteristic community species (ex: Lanice or Abra) or populations whose density is so large that they are the ideal material for a regular pluri-annual study (ex: Nucule). For some of them, a regular geographical distribution along the Channel coasts, can be another reason for their selection. On the one hand, for some species, which can be easily reached on the tidal zone, works are numerous and documentation heavy, especially in the ethology field (building of tube of Lanice, displacement of Patelle) On the other hand, documentation, if any, is...
