In this study we selected three habitats that correspond to a light gradient, and consequently a proportion of pioneer plant species gradient edges, trails and forest core and described their herbivorous insect assemblage. We tested five hypothesis about the herbivorous assemblage: (1) there is a different distribution of abundance and richness of order between habitats, (2) species similarity between habitats is smaller than within habitat, (3) in forest edge the herbivores are more abundant than in trails and interior of the forest, (4) in nuclear areas herbivore richness and diversity are higher than in the trails and edge, and (5) the abundance and richness of herbivores are different between seasons. Herbivorous were sampled during November 2000 - May... |

The volatile oils extracted from the roots of Polygala extraaxillaris were analyzed to assess whether they increase oxidative stress in Brachiaria decumbens var. Piatã, as well as to assess their effect on cellular division and cytotoxicity in laboratory. Six concentrations were used (0%, 0.35%, 0.65%, 1.25%, 0.65%, and 5.0%) with four repetitions of 25 seeds. The substance 1-(2-hydroxyphenyl) - ethanone was identified as the major constituent of the volatile oils. The results showed that the highest concentrations of the oils resulted in an increase in the oxidative stress in B. decumbens, as well as alteration in germination and growth, with a consequent reduction in the process of cellular division, causing changes in the growth standard and antioxidant... |

ABSTRACT Citrus canker, caused by Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri (Xcc), has an important economic impact on the citrus industry. Extensive information is available about the disease but, nevertheless, the study of plant-pathogen interactions could provide new information in the understanding of citrus canker disease. A new isolate has been identified, Xcc AT, which has a high genetic similarity (> 90 %) to the virulent Xcc T strain based on genetic clustering analyses of the rep-PCR fingerprinting patterns, but it does not produce cankerous lesions in Citrus limon. In this study, we compared C. limon responses to Xcc AT and to the virulent Xcc T strain at both histological and transcriptional levels. Histologically, leaves inoculated with Xcc AT... |

Enterolobin is a 52.9 kDa, cytolytic, inflammatory and insecticidal protein present in Enterolobium contortisiliquum (Vell.) Morong, a Brazilian large-sized tree. This protein was previously described to occur in different forms of association (monomeric and oligomeric forms). In the current work, we investigated the presence of enterolobin forms of association and hemolytic activity in maturing, germinating and germinated seeds. Immunoblotting analysis revealed the presence of the monomeric form of enterolobin in all phases under study, whereas the dimer was detected in developing seeds in the second half of the maturation period, during germination and in the early post-germination phase. The trimeric form of enterolobin appeared one week after the dimer... |

ABSTRACT: The study of non-target organisms such as mites, can provide information about the possible effects of transgenic maize cultivars on the arthropod community. This study aimed to evaluate the abundance of phytophagous mites in the area of Bt maize and evaluate the instantaneous population growth rate, and food preference of phytophagous mites on Bt maize. We registered the species occurrence and the number of adult mite individuals on four maize cultivars, one non-Bt 30F35, and three containing the proteins Cry1Ab (30F35 Yg), Cry1F (30F35 Hx) and Vip3a (Impacto Viptera). Cry proteins disrupt the midgut epithelium of insect pests. The food preference and instantaneous population growth rate (ri) were evaluated using the two-spotted spider mite... |
