Effect of soybean ureases on seed germination and plant development Genet. Mol. Biol.
Rechenmacher,Ciliana; Wiebke-Strohm,Beatriz; Oliveira-Busatto,Luisa A. de; Polacco,Joseph C.; Carlini,Célia R.; Bodanese-Zanettini,Maria H..
Abstract Urease catalyzes the hydrolysis of urea to ammonia and carbon dioxide. The ammonia (nitrogen (N) product of urease activity) is incorporated into organic compounds. Thus, urease is involved in N remobilization, as well as in primary N assimilation. Two urease isoforms have been described for soybean: the embryo-specific, encoded by the Eu1 gene, and the ubiquitous urease, encoded by Eu4. A third urease-encoding gene was recently identified, designated Eu5, which encodes the putative protein product SBU-III. The present study aimed to evaluate the contribution of soybean ureases to seed germination and plant development. Analyses were performed using Eu1/Eu4/Eu5-co-suppressed transgenic plants and mutants of the Eu1 and Eu4 urease structural genes,...

Identification and characterization of homeobox genes in Eucalyptus Genet. Mol. Biol.
Rocha,Graça Celeste Gomes; Corrêa,Régis Lopes; Borges,Anna Cristina Neves; Sá,Claudio Bustamante Pereira de; Alves-Ferreira,Márcio.
Homeobox genes encode transcriptional factors, usually involved in molecular control of plant developmental patterns. They can be divided into several classes according to conserved sequences within the homeobox region and the presence of specific additional sequences. Based on these conserved sequences, we developed a search procedure to identify possible homeobox genes in the Eucalyptus Genome Sequencing Project Consortium (FORESTs) database. We were able to identify 50 Eucalyptus sequences (EST-contigs) containing the homeodomain sequence. Phylogenetic analysis was applied to this ESTs-contigs and 44 of them were found to have similarities with one of three well-known homeobox classes: Bell, Knox and HD-Zip, and their sub-classes. However, no EST-contig...

Thidiazuron effects on shoot growth, return bloom, fruit set and nutrition of apples PAB
Amarante,Cassandro Vidal Talamini do; Ernani,Paulo Roberto; Blum,Luiz Eduardo Bassay; Megguer,Clarice Aparecida.
Apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) trees, cultivars Gala and Fuji, were sprayed at full bloom with thidiazuron (TDZ) at doses of 0, 5, 10, or 20 g ha-1 of a.i. in order to evaluate its effects on plant growth and development, return bloom, fruit set, nutrition, and fruit yield. Fruit set increased with TDZ dose in 'Gala' but not in 'Fuji'. TDZ did not affect fruit yield in any cultivar. In 'Gala', the return bloom was reduced in about 50% at TDZ doses of 10 or 20 g ha-1. TDZ increased shoot growth in both cultivars. In leaves, TDZ decreased the concentration of Ca and Mg in 'Gala' and of Mg in 'Fuji', but did not affect the chlorophyll content, leaf area, length, width, and dry mass per cm² regardless of cultivar. In fruits, the effect of TDZ varied according...

Growth Analysis of Chloris elata Planta Daninha
CORREIA,N.M.; RESENDE,I..
ABSTRACT: In Brazil, in agricultural areas where there is no establishment of cover crops in the off season, as well as in citrus orchards in the state of São Paulo, an increase in the infestation of Chloris elata has been observed. This is a perennial species, propagated by seeds and short rhizomes, erect and slightly caespitose. With the objective of evaluating the growth and development of plants from two accessions of C. elata, a greenhouse experiment was conducted. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a 2 (accessions of C. elata) x 15 (evaluation periods) factorial arrangement, with four replications. Fifteen destructive evaluations were performed 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56, 63, 70, 77, 84, 91, 98, 112 and 126 days after sowing (DAS)...

Interspecific Competition Between Sweet Sorghum and Weeds Planta Daninha
GIANCOTTI,P.R.F.; NEPOMUCENO,M.P.; OLIVEIRA,T.S.; COSTA,C.; ALVES,P.L.C.A..
ABSTRACT: While evidence is mounting that sweet sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench], an ethanol crop, may provide an alternative to sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) on sugarcane lands under rehabilitation, little is known of its under production limiting factors (e.g., interspecific competition with weeds). Accordingly, the aim of the present study was to identify the initial mutual interspecific competition between sweet sorghum hybrids and weeds in high infestation situations. The experiment was carried out in pots, using a 5 × 6 factorial design: (i) a sorghum-free control and four sweet sorghum hybrids (CVSW 81198, CVSW 80007, CVSW 80147 and XBSW 82158), besides a control without sweet-sorghum, and (ii) five species of weeds [Cyperus rotundus L.,...

Performance of Flooded Rice Grown in Succession to Winter Cover Crops Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Luz,Silmara da Correia; Silva,Paulo Regis Ferreira da; Boeni,Madalena; Bredemeier,Christian; Anghinoni,Ibanor; Menegati,Guilherme Batista; Maass,Matheus Barreto; Miozzo,Laís Correa.
ABSTRACT: Mean grain yield of flooded rice in southern Brazil has increased in recent years due to the use of high-yield cultivars and improvement of crop management practices. Nevertheless, stagnation in grain yields has been observed in some rice-producing regions. Adoption of conservation tillage systems based on cover crops may be a strategy to increase rice grain yield potential. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of winter cover crops on initial establishment, development, and grain yield of flooded rice (Oryza sativa L.) grown under different fertilization levels and no-tillage. A field experiment was carried out for three consecutive years (2010/11, 2011/12, and 2012/13) in Cachoeirinha, Rio Grande do Sul, South Brazil....

Simulating the vernalization response of the "Snow Queen" lily (Lilium longiflorum Thunb.) Scientia Agricola
Streck,Nereu Augusto; Schuh,Mariângela.
Vernalization is a process required by certain plant species, including lilies (Lilium spp.), to enter the reproductive phase, through an exposure to low, non-freezing temperatures. The objective of this study was to evaluate a nonlinear vernalization response function for the "Snow Queen" lily. An experiment was carried out in Santa Maria, RS, Brazil, to provide an independent data set to evaluate the performance of the model. Lily bulbs were vernalized at -0.5, 4.0, and 10ºC during two, four, six, and eight weeks. The daily vernalization rate (fvn) for each treatment was calculated with a beta function, and the effective vernalization days (VD) were calculated by accumulating fvn. The thermal time from plant emergence to visible buds at different VD...

Base temperature for leaf appearance and phyllochron of selected strawberry cultivars in a subtropical environment Bragantia
Rosa,Hamilton Telles; Walter,Lidiane Cristine; Streck,Nereu Augusto; Andriolo,Jerônimo Luiz; Silva,Michel Rocha da; Langner,Josana Andréia.
Leaf development is characterized by the appearance of new leaves and is related to crop leaf area index, which affects the interception of solar radiation used for photosynthesis and biomass production and ultimately defines crop yield. The objectives of this paper were to estimate the base temperature for leaf appearance and to determine the phyllochron of two strawberry cultivars considering several planting dates. A two-year field experiment was conducted during 2008 and 2009 in Santa Maria (RS). The cultivars Arazá (early) and Yvapitá (late) were used at three planting dates in both years. Base temperature (Tb) was estimated using the Mean Square Error (MSE) approach of the regression between accumulated leaf number (LN) and accumulated thermal time...
