Intraspecific ecomorphological variations in Poecilia reticulata (Actinopterygii, Cyprinodontiformes): comparing populations of distinct environments Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Mise,Fábio T.; Souza,Fagner de; Pagotto,João P. A.; Goulart,Erivelto.
ABSTRACT Morphological variations, according to the principles of ecomorphology, can be related to different aspects of the organism way of life, such as occupation of habitats and feeding behavior. The present study sought to examine the intraspecific variation in two populations of Poecilia reticulata Peters, 1859, that occur in two types of environments, a lotic (Maringá Stream) and a lentic (Jaboti Lake). Due to a marked sexual dimorphism, males and females were analyzed separately. Thus, the proposed hypotheses were that the populations that occur in distinct environments present morphological differences. The morphological variables were obtained using morphometric measurements and the ecomorphological indexes. The data were summarized in a Principal...

Ultrastructural Aspects of Spermatogenesis in Phalloceros caudimaculatus (Teleostei, Poeciliidae) International Journal of Morphology
Vicentini,Carlos Alberto; Muñoz,Mario Esteban; Vicentini,Irene Bastos Franceschini.
The aim of the present study was to analyze the ultrastructural aspects of spermatogenesis in Phalloceros caudimaculatus, during cell proliferation. The parenchyma is organized morphologically as lobular restricted spermatogonial testis. Spermiogenesis in this species is characterized by four morphological stages of development (spermatids S1 through S4). The mature spermatids and spermatozoa heads are situated at the periphery of the cyst surrounded by the cytoplasm of the Sertoli cells. The germ cell's ultrastructure and spermatogenesis in P. caudimaculatus are very similar to that of other poeciliids.

Feeding ecology of Phalloceros anisophallos (Osteichthyes: Cyprinodontiformes) from Andorinha Stream, Ilha Grande, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Mazzoni,Rosana; Araújo,Raphaella Rangel da Silva; Santos,Gardênia Carolina Tosta dos; Iglesias-Rios,Ricardo.
In the present work, we determined the relative importance of allochthonous and autochthonous food items as well as seasonal and ontogenetic variation in the feeding habits of Phalloceros anisophallos from córrego Andorinha, Ilha Grande. Quantitative analysis, based on alimentary index (IAi) and food volume (Vo), revealed that P. anisophallos fed on detritus, autochthonous algae (diatoms, unicellular and filamentous Chlorophyceae algae), autochthonous animals (aquatic insect larvae: Trichoptera, Chironomidae and other Diptera) and allochthonous animals (terrestrial insects: Hymenoptera). Ontogenetic variations were recorded for the consumption of each food category. Adults used a larger amount of algae and detritus, and juveniles used a higher amount of...

Aspectos reprodutivos de Poecilia vivipara (Bloch & Schneider) (Poeciliidae) da Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil Zoologia
Mendonça,José P.; Andreata,José V..
Poecilia vivipara (Bloch & Schneider. 1801) is a species that lives in the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon, a coastal lagoon in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The objective of this study was to increase the knowledge about reproductive aspects of P. vivipara population including: the female size when it begins reproduction, the number of offsprings per gestation, embrionary development stages and the number of pregnant females. The results show that P. vivipara reproduces throughout the whole year with its first maturation occurring at 29 mm. The proportion found of females to males was 3:1. Embryos showed four developmental stages until birth with sexual differentiation occurring after 15mm.

Presence of Poecilia mexicana Steindachner in a temporary hyperhaline estuary of the Gulf of Mexico Boletín de Investigaciones
Chávez-López,Rafael; 0000-0002-6105-4294,Arturo Rocha-Ramírez ID; 0000-0002-7545-2269,Ángel Morán-Silva ID.
ABSTRACT In this contribution, Poecilia mexicana is recorded for the first time in a blind estuary study under hyperhalin conditions in the Gulf of Mexico and various ecological characteristics of the species are analyzed. 170 specimens in total (128 females and 42 males), were collected in May 2013 in the Laguna El Llano estuary, Veracruz, Mexico, which presented warm waters (31.4 °C), well-oxygenated (9.45 mg/L), transparent, and hyperhaline (average 73 UPS). Females were collected in a size range of 4.28-59.21 mm in standard length and 0.04-5.48 g by weight; males were collected in a size range of 15.73-51.41 mm LP and 0.091-2.97 g by weight. Largest size range was 10-29 mm standard length. The females presented a negative allometric growth; the males...
