Waltheria carmensarae, a homostylous species from northeastern Argentina, southeastern Paraguay, and central Venezuela, and W. procumbens, a distylous species from northeastern Paraguay, are newly described and illustrated. Both species share along with some other species of Waltheria sect. Waltheria and all of sect. Stegowaltheria an elongate-plumose stigma, adaxial petals with raised succulent midribs, petals adnate to the stamen tube for more than 0.8 mm in length, and a capsule with hardened endocarp only at the apex. In the 1990s Rubiaceae became a hot spot for systematists, mainly due to the comprehensive treatment of the family by Robbrecht in 1988. Next to the exploration of macromolecular characters to infer the phylogeny, the palynology of Rubiaceae finally received the attention it deserves. This article aims to present a state-of-the-art analysis of the systematic palynology of the family. The range of variation in pollen morphology is wide, and some of the pollen features are not known from other angiosperm taxa; e.g., a looplike or spiral pattern for the position of apertures in pantoaperturate grains. Pollen of 57 species of Syzygium from SE Asia were surveyed by SEM. The grains are all ± triangular in polar view, uniformly small (mean diameter 10.4 μm) with few surface sculpturing features. All species examined exhibit a distinct apocolpium and, usually, apocolpial field. The presence of an apocolpial field cannot be linked to any known taxonomic grouping within the genus. It does not appear possible to distinguish the species of Syzygium on the basis of features of the pollen visible under SEM, though section Jambosa tends to have larger pollen with a proportionally larger apocolpium than species not in that section. Complementary to the revision of the genus Spermacoce in the Northern Territory of Australia, pollen morphology of 48 of the 53 native Spermacoce species from the Northern Territory has been investigated by scanning electron and light microscopy. There is considerable variation for most diagnostic pollen characters. The average equatorial diameter (E) ranges from 10.5 to 41.7 μm. ABSTRACT This study aims to expand knowledge of the pollen morphology of Passifloraceae and contribute to the taxonomic delimitation of the group by morphologically characterizing pollen grains of species that occur in the Brazilian state of Bahia.
