Evidence of terrestrial feeding in the arboreal lizard Enyalius bilineatus (Sauria, Polychrotidae) of south-eastern Brazil BJB

The diet of the arboreal lizard E. bilineatus was assessed based on analysis of gut contents of specimens collected in the remnants of the Atlantic rainforest in Espírito Santo State, south-eastern Brazil. Stomachs of the lizards examined (SVL = 57.0-85.0 mm) contained nine arthropod orders. E. bilineatus utilizes a broad range of arthopodan prey type and sizes, and can be considered an arthropod generalist, which uses a sit-and-wait foraging strategy. Orthoptera represented the most important food item, followed by Dictyoptera and Hymenoptera. Hemiptera, Homoptera, Lepidoptera (larvae), Coleoptera, Araneae, and Diplopoda constituted the remainder of food items. A multivariate analysis of taxonomic limits in Diplolaemus Bell 1843 Gayana

The gemís Diplolaemus Bell, 1843 is a common squamate component of the Patagonian región of South América. Considerable taxonomic confusión exists within this gemís, particularly about the status of Chilean-Andean populations and the actual distribution of D. leopardinas (Werner, 1898). In an attempt to clarify the taxonomic status and distribution of Diplolaemus species, we performed a principal component analysis (PCA) and discriminant function analysis (DFA) using both standard morphometric and meristic data. Multivariate summaries of morphometric data show that most species are poorly discriminated, with the exception of D. darwinii. New specimens of Anolis phyllorhinus (Squamata, Polychrotidae): the first female of the species and of proboscid anoles Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)

Among a series of eight specimens of Anolis phyllorhinus obtained in the northern part of the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil, one was determined to be the first female known for the species and the first so far reported for proboscid anoles. The female lacks the characteristic male proboscis and, excepting a few consistent differences, is morphologically similar to females of Anolis punctatus, a species closely related and broadly sympatric with A. phyllorhinus. Males and females of the new series are described and new data on their ecology and behavior presented. The new data are consistent with the hypotheses that the male proboscis probably evolved as a sexual signal and that visual signals for intra and interspecific recognition are redundant in anoles.
