ABSTRACT Red seaweed possess various sulfated polysaccharides (SPs) that could potentially be exploited as bioactive agents for medical and industrial applications. Crude polysaccharides from the red algae Corallina officinalis (SP1) and Pterocladia capillacea (SP2) were extracted and characterized according to their chemical content and their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticoagulant, antibacterial, antifungal, and antifouling activities. Banisteriopsis is considered one of the largest genera of Malpighiaceae with 58 species, of which 47 occur in Brazil. The typical calyx and leaf glands of Banisteriopsis are considered relevant to the adaptive success of Malpighiaceae. Comparative studies of anatomical and histochemical characteristics may reveal similarities and assist in the interpretation of the functions performed by such glands. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the mushroom Agaricus blazeii Murril (ABM) extracts on the hematological profile of Swiss mice bearing an Ehrlich solid tumor. Three fractions (total extract, polysaccharides, and supernatant) of ABM extracts obtained by four methods (ultrasonic or water bath, at pH 4 or pH 7) were administered to mice over 21 days. The fate of organochlorine 14C-dicofol in activated sludge process was investigated. Results showed that the major part of radioactivity remained adsorbed on biological sludge. Consequently, its final disposal deserves special attention. The small amounts of dicofol, biotransformed or not, which remained in the treated effluent could contaminate receiving bodies.

Obtaining polysaccharides from grape cell walls is an interesting topic for the wine industry given its implications with regards to wine treatments and potential sensory attributes. In the present work, several conditions (i.e., a chelating agent, pH, titratable acidity, extraction time, number of successive extractions, solid to liquid ratio and alcoholic fermentation) were tested to assess their effects on the yield of soluble polysaccharides obtained from grape skins. Abstract Native starch was isolated from two corn landraces (blue and white) and a hybrid variety and then characterized for its physicochemical, thermal and rheological properties. The hybrid variety showed the highest starch yield, with its starch showing the highest fat, moisture and protein content but the lowest onset temperature of gelatinization. The hybrid corn starch also showed the highest G’ and G” values. The tested starches showed similar Tp, Tc, and ΔH values. The amylose contents ranged from 21.5 to 22.4%, with starch from blue corn showing the highest amylose content. All starches were white, with L values ranging from 93.6 to 99.5. Incidence of hydrocolloid type on quality parameters in mango leathers (Mangifera indica L.) Yulima variety Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.

Abstract The effect of four hydrocolloids on the physico-chemical, bioactive and rheological properties in sweetened mango leather sheets of the Yulima variety were analyzed. Parametric and non-parametric statistical tests were done to analyze the differences among samples (four of treatment against two of control). The findings show significant positive effects caused by the hydrocolloids made from Gum Arabic (AG), Maltodextrin (MTD) and Citric Slow Pectin (CSP) on leathers’ quality and appearance attributes. Only the Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) reported adverse effects on the mango leather's quality; therefore, its use on an industrial scale is not recommended for this line of processed product.

Abstract This study aimed to investigate the effects of Cyclocarya paliurus (Batal.) Iljinskaja polysaccharides (CPP) on the glucose-lipid metabolism in T2DM rats. T2DM model was established in 40 Wistar rats which were then randomly divided into model, CPP-1, CPP-2 and CPP-3 groups. Ten normal rats were selected as the control group. The CPP-1, CPP-2 and CPP-3 group were intragastrically administrated with 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg CPP for 4 weeks, respectively. Mimic biological structures such as the cell wall of plant tissues may be an alternative to obtain biodegradable films with improved mechanical and water vapor barrier properties. This study aims to evaluate the mechanical properties and water vapor permeability (WVP) of films produced by using the solvent-casting technique from blended methylcellulose, glucomannan, pectin and gelatin. First, films from polysaccharides at pH 4 were produced. The paper provides information about histochemical staining reactions in leaves and embryos of 'Coqueiro Anão' (Cocos nucifera). It was compared in vitro coconut and autotrophic palm leaves. Reactions for insoluble polysaccharides and acidic compounds, protein, extractable lipids, lignin and other classes of compounds were tested using histochemical tests. None sample gave positive reaction for lignin and phenolic compounds. The interaction of proteins with polysaccharides represents a major and challenging topic in glycobiology, since such complexes mediate fundamental biological mechanisms. An affinity capillary electrophoresis method has been developed to evidence the complex formation and to determine the binding properties between an anticoagulant polysaccharide of marine origin, fucoidan, and a potential target protein, antithrombin. This method is a variant of zonal electrophoresis in the mobility shift format.
