World food loss and waste can cause about USD 750 billion a year in damage. Post-harvest losses estimates in developing countries vary greatly, reaching up to 50% or more. According to data from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), 54% of losses and waste occur at the initial stage of production – during post-harvest handling and storage, and 46% during processing, distribution, and consumption. Consumers often dispose of food after buying it because they verify that it does not meet their quality requirements, especially regarding appearance and taste. This is why there must be more research on reducing food loss and waste in the world so as to increase food supply, improve production costs, and reduce environmental impacts. |

The retail market is an important stage of the productive chain to study postharvest losses of vegetables. Due to their perishability, vegetables are rapidly transported to the market after harvest and most of the damage they suffer from harvest to transport will show up and cause losses only during marketing. On the other hand, the amount of discard depends greatly on consumer?s behaviour, including how they handle the vegetables and their preference. In its turn, handling of the vegetable by the market agents and the marketing strategies affect, respectively, the shelf life and the rate of turnover of the produce, and consequently, the volume of loss. |

Carrot loss at primary production comprises the loss that occurs during the harvesting and during the preparation of the produce for the market in the packing house. In this research it was estimated in 4 farms in Federal District, Brazil. From those, 2 are organic farms producing carrots in small areas, and 2 are large farms using conventional system. The surveys were initiated in 2019, interrupted during the Covid-19 pandemic and resumed in 2022. The total loss of carrot roots varied from 6.2% + 1.0% to 34.8% + 2.4% of the total production what corresponded to a mass of 1.000 kg/ha + 425 kg/ha to 22.947 kg/ha + 3.637 kg/ha. |

Abstract Studying the causes of postharvest fruit loss is important to avoid reduction of quality and quantity for the consumer due, for example, to the influence of frequent impacts from vibrations during transportation. In this sense, this study evaluates the storage quality of ‘Palmer’ mangoes after being subjected to different simulated road transport vibrations. Vibration was simulated from the analysis of the profile of the frequencies generated in road transport of fruit, determined in a tractor trailer. ‘Palmer’ mangoes stored after vibration stress wereevaluated for: mass loss, absorbance difference index (IAD), peel and pulp browning index (BI), pulp firmness, soluble solids content, and titratable acidity. The development of a vibration machine... |
