Presence of Palaemon Macrodactylus Rathbun 1902 (Crustacea: Decapoda: Caridea: Palaemonidae) in Mar del Plata harbor, Argentina: first record from Southwestern Atlantic Waters OceanDocs
Boschi, E.E.; Spivak, E.; Martorelli, S.R..
Adults of the palaemonid prawn Palaemon macrodactylus Rathbun, 1902 were reported for the first time from the southwestern Atlantic waters. Males and ovigerous females were collected in Mar del Plata harbor (38 degree 03' S; 57 degree 31' W), Argentina; larvae obtained from one of the collected females were reared in the laboratory until the juvenile stage. The geographical range of P. macrodactylus was previously restricted to the Pacific Ocean: it was originally described in Japan and has been reported as an invasive species in the western coast of USA in the 1950's and in Australia in the 1970's. Recently, this prawn has been also reported from European waters.

Abundance and Reproductive Biology of the Penaeid Prawns of Bagamoyo Coastal Waters, Tanzania OceanDocs
Mgaya, Y.D.; Teikwa, E.D..
The coastal waters of Bagamoyo in Tanzania constitute an important penaeid prawn trawling ground. Despite the high economic value attached to this resource, the biological information necessary for its sustainable exploitation is scanty and fragmented. The present study was therefore designed to investigate the species composition, population abundance and reproduction of the penaeid prawns in Bagamoyo coastal and nearshore waters. Samples were obtained monthly for a period of one year from inshore waters adjacent to the Ruvu Estuary while additional samples were bought at the beach from artisanal fishermen. In the laboratory, samples were identified to the species level. Four penaeid species, Fenneropenaeus indicus (formerly known as Penaeus indicus...

Performance of Macrobrachium rosenbergii broodstock fed diets with different fatty acid composition OMA
Cavalli, R.O.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The effect of linoleic acid (18:2n-6) and n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) on the reproductive performance and offspring quality of the freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii was evaluated in a 180-day trial. Three isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets containing different levels of fatty acids, high 18:2n-6 and n-3 HUFA concentrations, high 18:2n-6 and low n-3 HUFA, and low 18:2n-6 and n-3 HUFA, were fed ad libitum to three groups of six females. Fecundity was improved by the addition of higher amounts of 18:2n-6 (from 3 to 13 mg g-1 DW). As a consequence of higher fecundity, smaller eggs were obtained most likely because the number of oocytes competing for a limited amount of yolk was higher. The...

Variations in lipid classes and fatty acid content in tissues of wild Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man) females during maturation OMA
Cavalli, R.O.; Tamtin, M.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
This study describes the variations in total lipid, lipid classes and fatty acids in the midgut gland (MG), ovary, and muscle tissue of wild-caught Macrobrachium rosenbergii to elucidate the importance of these components during sexual maturation. Mature females were captured in the Mae Klong River, Thailand, from July to September 1998, and divided into five groups according to their ovarian development. Total lipid levels in the ovary increased with maturation, but no concomitant decrease in MG lipids was observed. Thus, the lipid requirements of the developing ovary are thought to be more dependent on the immediate ingestion of dietary lipid than on MG reserves. Higher proportions of neutral lipids (NL), mainly triacylglycerols (TG),...

Maturation performance, offspring quality and lipid composition of Macrobrachium rosenbergii females fed increasing levels of dietary phospholipids OMA
Cavalli, R.O.; Menschaert, G.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The effects of increasing levels of dietary phospholipids (PL) on the reproductive performance, egg and larval quality, and lipid composition of females of the freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii were investigated. Three isolipidic diets containing similar amounts of highly unsaturated fatty acids but varying levels of PL (0.8, 2.4 and 4.6%) were fed during 180 days to three groups of eight females originating from Thai ponds. No significant differences were observed for fecundity, egg size and hatchability, starved larvae size, and size, survival and tolerance to stress of 8 day-old larvae. Similarly, no major differences in the lipid composition of the midgut gland, ovaries and muscle tissue of females could be detected. Results...

HUFA levels in eggs of wild and cultured broodstock of Macrobrachium rosenbergii OMA
Lavens, P.; Piyatiratitivorakul, S.; Menasveta, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The variation in egg quality, i.e. the potential of the egg to produce viable fry, is still a limiting factor in the commercial production of marine fish and crustacean fry. Better knowledge in this field would contribute to improved and especially more consistent hatchery outputs and to the development of more suitable broodstock diets. So far, objective criteria to evaluate egg quality are scarce. However, it is very likely that the nutrient composition of the eggs may be a good indicator for egg viability as it reflects the nutrient demands of the developing embryo and larva. Since (n-3) highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFAs) have been identified as essential nutrients for the larvae of marine fish, shrimp and prawn a case study has been initiated with...

Reproductive performance of Macrobrachium rosenbergii females in captivity OMA
Cavalli, R.O.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The breeding frequency, fecundity, egg hatchability, larval output and viability of pond-reared, mature Macrobrachium rosenbergii females were individually followed up during 180 d. Sexually mature prawns were maintained under controlled laboratory conditions (28.7 C and 12-h light/d) in a 190-L freshwater recirculation system and fed a formulated diet. Ovarian development, moulting and spawning events were checked daily. At least six consecutive moults were recorded for each of the 18 females. The duration of the intermoult period averaged 27.5 d and was not affected by ovarian development or spawning, but intermoult periods followed by spawning had significantly lower growth rates. From a total of 126 moulting events recorded, egg...
