Spatial distribution of pollen grains and spores in surface sediments of Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Barreto,Cintia F.; Vilela,Claudia G.; Baptista-Neto,José A.; Barth,Ortrud M..
Aiming to investigate the deposition of pollen grains and spores in Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro State, 61 surface sediment samples were analyzed. The results showed that the current deposition of palynomorphs in surface sediments of Guanabara Bay represents the regional vegetation of this hydrographic basin. The differential distribution of palynomorphs followed a pattern influenced by bathymetry, tidal currents speed, discharge of numerous rivers, and by human activity. The dominance of representatives of Field Vegetation reflects the changes of the original flora caused by intense human activities in the region. The continued presence and richness of pollen types of rain forest in the samples indicates that their source area might be the vegetation...

Long-term cryopreservation of basidiomycetes BJM
Linde,Giani Andrea; Luciani,Alana; Lopes,Ana Daniela; Valle,Juliana Silveira do; Colauto,Nelson Barros.
Abstract Basidiomycetes have several biotechnological and industrial applications such as enzyme production, bioremediation, pharmaceutical and functional food production. Due to climatic features, the preservation of several basidiomycetes is threatened, and to guarantee the preservation of this genetic resource, the development of long-term preservation techniques is necessary once there is no universal protocol for the cryopreservation of basidiomycetes. Cryopreservation is a technique in which microorganisms are submitted to ultralow temperatures. Therefore, this study aimed to collect information on the main conditions for long-term cryopreservation of basidiomycetes in the last 20 years. Scientific articles on cryopreservation of basidiomycetes...

Effect of lactic acid bacteria on extention of shelf life and growth of Listeria monocytogenes in beef steaks stored in CO2- rich atmosphere BJM
Djenane,Djamel; Martínez,Luis; Blanco,Domingo; Yangüela,Javier; Beltrán,José A.; Roncalés,Pedro.
Beef steaks were inoculated with one or other of two protective strains of lactic acid bacteria (bacteriocinogenic Lactobacillus sakei CTC 372 or the uncharacterized Lactobacillus CTC 711), and stored under modified atmospheres (20-40% CO2). Inoculation of meat with LAB inhibited growth of the spoilage bacteria. Neither CO2 in the pack atmosphere or inoculation with protective strains, nor a combination of both, affected formation of metmyoglobin or the development of off-odours. The formation of metmyoglobin in meat pigments and the sensory odour scores were compatible to those of fresh meat which had not undergone either oxidative deterioration or microbial spoilage. Listeria monocytogenes was inhibited in broth by meat surface microbiota containing the...

Orchid cryopreservation Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Vendrame,Wagner; Faria,Ricardo Tadeu de; Sorace,Mauren; Sahyun,Sandra Aparecida.
Orchids are lush and highly valuable plants due to their diversity and the beauty of their flowers, which increases their commercialization. The family Orchidaceae comprises approximately 35,000 species, distributed among more than 1,000 distinct genera and 100,000 hybrids, totaling approximately 8% to 10% of all flowering plants. With the advance of agriculture and the constant destruction of their natural habitat, orchid species are collected in an indiscriminate manner by collectors and vendors, and this extractive activity threatens many species with extinction, drastically reducing their genetic variability in nature. Therefore, it is essential to seek alternatives that make the preservation of such species feasible using techniques with low...

The preservation effect and mechanism of gelatin on golden pompano (Trachinotus blochii) fillets during cold storage Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
WEI,Peiyu; CAO,Jun; SHEN,Xuanri; LI,Chuan.
Abstract The effect of different concentrations of gelatin (0%, 2.5%, and 5%) and vacuum packaged on the preservation of golden pompano (Trachinotus blochii) fillets stored at 4 °C was studied over 14 days. The results suggested that both the gelatin groups (2.5% and 5%) showed a reduction in deterioration of colour, drip loss and texture compared to the control group (0%). In addition, the gelatin coating caused a slower reduction in the freshness indexes of the fish, such as total volatile base nitrogen (TVB-N), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), total viable counts and pH. During a certain storage period, the gelatin notably prevented the deterioration of the golden pompano fillet at 4 °C. The 5% gelatin group showed the best effect on...

Influence of passion fruit albedo, citric acid, and the pulp/sugar ratio on the quality of banana preserves Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
Silva,Igor Galvão; Martins,Glêndara Aparecida de Souza; Borges,Soraia Vilela; Marques,Gerson Reginaldo; Regis,Itamar Souza.
The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of the citric acid concentration, pulp/sugar ratio, and albedo concentration of the passion fruit peel on physical, physiochemical, and sensorial characteristics of the 'Silver' banana preserves. A 2³ factorial design and 3 repetitions in the central point were used. The albedo concentration between 0 and 3% had significant influence on the reduction of the reducing sugars and on the decrease in titratable acidity. The increase in the pulp/sugar ratio exerted a negative effect on the pH and positive on the titratable acidity; the acid addition reduced the non-reducing sugar level. The sensorial evaluation and purchase intention indicated that the incorporation of a maximum of 1.5% albedo in...

Application of active films with natural extract for beef hamburger preservation Ciência Rural
Lagos,Maria Jeannine Bonilla; Sobral,Paulo José do Amaral.
ABSTRACT: Edible chitosan-based films, in pure form (CH100), or blended with gelatin (GEL50:CH50), with and without boldo extract (B) were prepared. The oxygen permeability of the films, as well as color changes and antioxidant and antimicrobial activities on beef hamburgers samples were evaluated. CH100+B film exhibited optimal oxygen barrier properties (6.40±0.170cc-mL/[m²-day]), and this value was significantly increased in blended films (GEL50:CH50+B = 12.99±1.50cc-mL/[m²-day]) (P<0.05). All films provoked color changes in hamburger samples during storage, and the samples covered with CH100+B film showed a lower brightness and a higher redness. All films effectively protected beef hamburger from lipid oxidation, and boldo extract incorporation in...

A QUESTÃO AMBIENTAL: FLORESTAS E BIODIVERSIDADE Ciências Agrárias
Bertolino, Maria Lúcia.
This work has as objective to argue the environmental question concerning the conservation of the forests and biodiversity. One major issue in this question is that the Brazilian forest sector contributes with an important parcel for the Brazilian economy, generates products for direct consumption or for exportation, generates taxes and jobs for the population and, still, bring positive and negative consequences in the conservation and preservation of both renewable and not renewable natural resources. The forest economy has been, historically, responsible for one of the five largest positive commercial balances of the country and still it supplies 85% of all the products of forest origin found in the national market, therefore, alleviating the pressure on...
