Standardization of anti-lethal toxin potency test of antivenoms prepared from two different Agkistrodon halys venoms J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.

In Korea, antivenoms for the treatment of patients bitten by venomous snakes have been imported from Japan or China. Although there is cross-reactivity between these antibodies and venoms from snakes indigenous to Korea (e.g. Agkistrodon genus), protection is not optimal. Antivenoms specifically prepared to neutralize Korean snake venoms could be more effective, with fewer side effects. To this end, we established an infrastructure to develop national standards and created a standardized method to evaluate the efficacy of two horse-derived antivenoms using mouse lethal toxin test. Additionally, we determined the antivenoms neutralizing activity against lethal doses (LD50) of Agkistrodon halys (from Japan) and Jiangzhe Agkistrodon halys (from China) venoms....

An Evaluation of Tennessee Soybean Growers’ Views on a New Generation Cooperative to Produce Biodiesel AgEcon
Jensen, Kimberly L.; English, Burton C.; Menard, R. Jamey; Zhang, Yu.
Substituting petroleum diesel with biodiesel could decrease air emissions, reduce reliance on foreign oil, and help expand markets for U.S. farmers. Soybean producers can potentially capture this value-added by forward integrating the processing of soybeans into biodiesel via a New Generation Cooperative (NGC). Using probit analysis, this study examines factors influencing soybean producers’ willingness to participate in an NGC to produce biodiesel. Tobit analysis is used to examine the factors influencing the number of shares the soybean producer would be willing to purchase. Survey results indicate that over 70% of the soybean producers in the study group are interested in investing in an NGC to produce biodiesel. Among those producers willing to...

Harsche, Johannes.
This paper presents a Probit model explaining the expansion of part-time farming in the German State of Hesse. Particular emphasis is placed on the personality traits of the agricultural entrepreneur and the labour market. The regression is based on a cross-section data from 74 Hessian farms. The results suggest statistical significance of the personality traits on employment decisions. Other significant variables include the number of adult household members and the intensity of agricultural land use.

A statistical basis for selecting parameters for the evaluation of soil penetration resistance Scientia Agricola
Leão,Tairone Paiva; Silva,Álvaro Pires da.
Measurements of soil penetration resistance (SR) have been frequently used for the evaluation of soil structural quality for plant growth. However, different data analysis approaches have been used, without a previous evaluation of their statistical quality. In this study we tested the hypothesis that the mean is the parameter with best statistical properties to evaluate alterations in soil penetration resistance in response to soil use and management, as compared to other SR statistical parameters. Undisturbed (5 × 5 cm) soil cores were collected from three sampling sites with different degrees of compaction: an undisturbed site under native scierophylous forest (NC); a site under short-duration grazing with post-grazing residue maintained at 2.0 to 2.5...

Frutos maduros e semi-maduros...
