The Impact of CO2 Emission Cuts on Income AgEcon
Zhao, Xiaobing.
We study how carbon dioxide (CO2) emission cuts affect income for 23 OECD countries over the 1980-2004 period. The importance of this question is manifested in the disagreements at the 2009 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen and the 2010 State of the Union Address by United States President Barack Obama. We start by deriving an income-CO2 relationship based on a structural production function, which is a natural way to model the relationship among income, energy consumption, and CO2 emissions. We then use a similar empirical methodology as Tucker (1995) to estimate the income-CO2 relationship. Such an approach not only allows us to focus on the long-run relationship but also enables us to project the relationship between income and CO2...

DETERMINANTS OF TECHNICAL EFFICIENCY AND VARIETAL-GAP OF RICE PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA: A META-FRONTIER MODEL APPROACH AgEcon
Ayinde, Opeyemi Eyitayo; Adewumi, Matthew Olaniyi; Ojehomon, Vivian E.T..
This study uses the concept of meta-frontier function to examine the technical efficiency and varietal-gap of rice production in Nigeria. A random sample of 675 farmers was selected from three out six geographical zones in Nigeria. The farmers in this study were classified into three groups according to the variety of rice they planted. The three main varieties of rice planted are local (Ofada), improved (Mai-Nasara) and New Rice for African (NERICA). The technical efficiency indices were computed using the meta-frontier approach because production varieties and technologies were expected to differ between the three varieties. This method allows the measure of the varietal-differences which is the Technology Gap Ratio (TGR). Estimates of the frontier were...

Does Subsidizing Fertilizer Increase Yields? Evidence from Malawi AgEcon
Ricker-Gilbert, Jacob; Jayne, Thomas S.; Black, J. Roy.
Despite their strain on government and donor budgets, fertilizer subsidies have once again become popular policy tools in several Sub-Saharan Africa countries as a potential way to increase yields in staple crops like maize. Policy makers often assume that farmers who receive the subsidy will achieve yield responses that are similar to those obtained by farmers who pay commercial prices for the input. This notion has not been verified empirically. Our study uses panel data from Malawi, a country that recently implemented a fertilizer subsidy program, to compare maize yield response to fertilizer from farmers who received subsidized fertilizer with yield responses from those who paid commercial prices for the input. Descriptive results indicate that maize...

Sectoral Production Function of Chicken Broiler Fattening AgEcon
Maier, Tomas; Pankova, Ludmila.
The function was formed on the basis of sectional data from seven Czech businesses using data from seven to eight annual observations. The Least Square Dummy Variable Model was used to estimate the power function. The information presented in the article is the product of working on the Institutional Research Plan MSM 6046070906, "The Economics of Czech agriculture resources and their efficient use within a multifunctional agri-food systems framework".
