First Evidence of Realized Selection Response on Fillet Yield in Rainbow Trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, Using Sib Selection or Based on Correlated Ultrasound Measurements ArchiMer
Vandeputte, Marc; Bugeon, Jérôme; Bestin, Anastasia; Desgranges, Alexandre; Allamellou, Jean-michel; Tyran, Anne-sophie; Allal, Francois; Dupont-nivet, Mathilde; Haffray, Pierrick.
Fillet yield, the proportion of edible fillet relative to body weight, is a major trait to improve in fish sold processed, as it has a direct impact on profitability and can simultaneously decrease the environmental impact of producing a given amount of fillet. However, it is difficult to improve by selective breeding, because it cannot be measured on live breeding candidates, its phenotypic variation is low, and, as a ratio, it is not normally distributed and a same change in fillet yield can be the result of different changes in fillet weight and body weight. Residual headless gutted carcass weight (rHGCW) is heritable and highly genetically correlated to Fillet% in rainbow trout, and can be predicted by the ratio of abdominal wall thickness to depth of...

Production Inefficiency in Fed Cattle Marketing and the Value of Sorting Pens into Alternative Marketing Groups Using Ultrasound Technology AgEcon
Koontz, Stephen R.; Hoag, Dana L.; Brethour, John R.; Walker, Jodine L..
The cattle industry batch markets animals in pens. Because of this, animals within any one pen can be both underfed and overfed. Thus, there is a production inefficiency associated with batch marketing. We simulate the value of sorting animals through weight and ultrasound measurements from original pens into smaller alternative marketing groups. Sorting exploits the production inefficiency and enables cattle feeding enterprises to avoid meat quality discounts, capture premiums, more efficiently use feed resources, and increase returns. The value of sorting is between $15 and $25 per head, with declining marginal returns as the number of sort groups increases.

AN EXAMINATION OF PROFIT INEFFICIENCY OF RICE FARMERS IN NORTHERN GHANA AgEcon
Abdulai, Awudu; Huffman, Wallace E..
This paper employs a stochastic frontier model to examine profit inefficiency of rice farmers in the Northern Region of Ghana using farm-level survey data. The efficiency index, based on a half-normal distribution of the stochastic error term is related to farm and household characteristics. The empirical results show that farmers' human capital represented by the level of schooling contributes positively to production efficiency, suggesting that investment in farmers' education improves their allocative performance. Access to credit and greater specialization in rice production, are found to be positively related to production efficiency. A farmer's participation in nonfarm employment and being older, however, reduce production efficiency. Farmers...

MEETING THE KYOTO TARGET THROUGH CONSERVATION TILLAGE AND ITS IMPLICATION FOR NATURAL CAPITAL MAINTENANCE, PRODUCTION EFFICIENCY, AND SUSTAINABILITY AgEcon
Paudel, Krishna P.; Lohr, Luanne.
According to Article 3.4 of the Kyoto Protocol, agricultural soil could be used as a sink for carbon sequestration and hence it may provide an alternative venue to sequester the greenhouse gas emission. US plans to reduce the carbon emission amount by seven percent below the 1990 level within the target date of 2008-2012. The major approaches to achieve the goal targeted by Kyoto Protocol in US are through fossil fuel tax and increasing forest area by afforestation. This means fossil fuel price will increase which will have a direct impact to conventional tillage cost. As a result farmers would be motivated to use less machinery operation in farming and hence may use conservation tillage in farming practices. Rather than cause and effect relationship...

Why some community forests are performing better than others: a case of forest user groups in Nepal AgEcon
Chand, Narendra; Kerr, Geoffrey N.; Bigsby, Hugh R..
Management of many Nepalese forests has been devolved to local communities. Forest products, which are used by the community and which may also be traded, are essential contributors to community well-being. Forests are also important contributors of ecosystem services, such as flood protection and wildlife habitat. Nepalese communities were surveyed to measure flows of forest products from their community forests. A stochastic frontier analysis shows that communities are not producing forest products efficiently and there is potential for improvement. The results shows that forest products benefit and environmental performance are associated products. In addition, analysis reveals that factors such as social capital, support from government and knowledge...

Determinants of Credit Constraint Conditions and Production Efficiency Among Farming Households in Southwestern Nigeria AgEcon
Omonona, Bolarin T.; Lawal, Justina Oluwayemisi; Oyinlana, A.O..
Sustaining and improving production efficiency of resource poor smallholder farmers under the existing credit constraint conditions require the improvement of access to credit facilities and other factors involved. The study examined the factors influencing credit constraint (CC) and production efficiency of farming households in Oyo State, Nigeria. Primary data was randomly collected using structured questionnaire from 120 mixed farmers in the study area. Data was analyzed using descriptive analysis, probit regression and stochastic frontier analysis. The results shows that 79.2 percent of the respondents were credit constrained and this has negative influence on their production efficiency as credit constrained farming households (CCFH) were found to be...

Reforms and Efficiency Change in Transition Agriculture AgEcon
Swinnen, Johan F.M.; Vranken, Liesbet.
Studies on efficiency changes in transition agriculture yield mixed results. This paper develops both a theoretical model and an empirical analysis of how distribution of efficiency scores changes with the various stages of transition. We use a unique set of representative farm survey data to calculate farm level efficiency scores, compare the efficiency distributions of different transition countries and correlate these with various indicators of particular reforms. Our study indicates that, in particular, general institutional reforms and reforms focused on market institutions and on reducing market imperfections in input and output markets have an important positive impact on farm efficiency.

USING DEA TO EVALUATE EFFICIENCY OF HIGHER EDUCATION AgEcon
Toth, Reka.
The aim of the higher education reform process both in Hungary and in the European countries is establishing a competitive, qualitative higher education with efficiently operating institutions. The question of efficiency needs increased attention not only because of the decline of the state support but also the rapid raise of the student mass. In the education system it’s not easy to measure the output of the services. The situation is more complicated if an organisation or a sector has multiple inputs and outputs. In this case a possible method of determining efficiency is Data Envelopment Analysis. In my paper I’d like to introduce this method and use it to compare the efficiency of higher education systems. Furthermore I am examining whether their...

DO MACROECONOMIC SHOCKS IMPACT THE ECONOMIC EFFICIENCY OF SMALL FARMERS? THE CASE OF WETLAND RICE FARMERS IN INDONESIA AgEcon
Fabiosa, Jacinto F.; Jensen, Helen H.; Yan, Dong.
This study examines the impact of macroeconomic shocks on the efficiency of small farmers. We estimate single- and multiple-factor efficiency measures for Indonesian rice farmers in years before, during, and after the country's macroeconomic crisis. We find that productive efficiency declined by 7 to 22 percent during the crisis, largely because of a decline in technical efficiency and a relatively large volatility in efficiency (the coefficient of variation was larger by a factor of 1.87). Allocative efficiency, on the other hand, increased slightly and offset part of the decrease in technical efficiency. The magnitude of the impact on efficiency depended on farmers' input adjustments. Factors associated with higher levels of technical and allocative...

Overview on the performance of Brazilian broilers (1990 to 2009) Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Patricio,IS; Mendes,AA; Ramos,AA; Pereira,DF.
This article describes the genetic evolution of commercial broilers between 1990 and 2009, considering live performance, in particular, in terms of weight gain and feed conversion ratio. In order to determine if the assumption that the relationship between body weight gain and feed conversion ratio is increasing and positive, information on all broiler strains reared in Brazil were collected from several companies present in five Brazilian regions. This survey aimed at evaluating broiler live performance as a function of genetic improvement with time. Broiler performance improved, as shown by the statistical differences obtained for the following parameters: livability, live weight, daily weight gain, feed conversion ratio, and production efficiency index...
