An argument in favor of the development of genetically modified (GM) hybrids is that their presence is considered to be risk decreasing. On this basis, insurance premiums for corn growers in the United States who plant approved hybrids have been reduced. In this study we investigate, using a large dataset of experimental data compiled from reports of results from experimental field trials of corn hybrids by the State Agricultural Extension Services of ten universities over 20 years, whether the presence in a corn hybrid of a GM trait, or a combination of these traits, is likely to increase or decrease risk. Assessment of agricultural land fund in the Czech Republic, importance and future AgEcon

Assessment of land depends on the production function of soil and additional connections given by environmental requirements, by the evaluation of public goods or by the requirements for formation a fair tax policy and even by the interests of landowners. Analysis of coherences during the soil appraisal shows a relatively strong dependence on the development of year-by-year yields and cost including subsidy policy, which is strongly reflected in the grasslands. Development of subsidies does not basically influence a long- term return and costs ratio for the production on arable land. A PROGRAMMING APPROACH TO ESTIMATE PRODUCTION FUNCTIONS USING BOUNDS ON THE TRUE PRODUCTION SET AgEcon

Varian (1984) developed procedures to establish bounds on a true convex negative monotonic production set that p-rationalizes a set of data consistent with the weak axiom of profit maximization. These bounds can provide additional information for estimating parametric production functions. A mathematical programming procedure is developed to maximize various measures of goodness of fit of alternative parametric specifications relative to the true production set.

Choosing an Empirical Production Function: Theory, Nonnested Hypotheses, Costs of Specifications AgEcon

This paper considers the specification of a production function, using crop-yield response to agricultural lime as an example. The paper first reviews neoclassical production theory, observing that this theory specifies neither the form nor the arguments of a production function. Several functions that are consistent with the theory are then evaluated by goodness-of-fit tests, by nonnested-hypothesis tests, and by "costs of misspecification." Neither goodness-of-fit tests nor nonnested-hypothesis tests provide a clear choice among the candidate functions; costs of misspecification provide some choice.

Production function estimation in Stata using inputs to control for unobservables AgEcon

A key issue in the estimation of production functions is the correlation between unobservable productivity shocks and input levels. Profit-maximizing firms respond to positive productivity shocks by expanding output, which requires additional inputs. Negative shocks lead firms to pare back output, decreasing their input usage. Olley and Pakes (1996) develop an estimator that uses investment as a proxy for these unobservable shocks. More recently, Levinsohn and Petrin (2003a) introduce an estimator that uses intermediate inputs as proxies, arguing that intermediates may respond more smoothly to productivity shocks. This paper reviews Levinsohn and Petrin’s approach and introduces a Stata command that implements it.

ABSTRACT The optimization in the use of irrigation is a necessity due to water scarcity and the increasing demand for food. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different irrigation depths on the economic efficiency of lettuce, eggplant, beet and carrot, cultivated in an organic production system. The evaluations were performed based on production functions obtained in field experiments conducted from 2006 to 2011, and survey of prices of products and inputs, determining the irrigation depths corresponding to the maximum gross profit and the maximum water use efficiency. Nitrogen (N) is an important nutrient for melon (Cucumis melo L.) production. However there is scanty information about the amount necessary to maintain an appropriate balance between growth and yield. Melon vegetative organs must develop sufficiently to intercept light and accumulate water and nutrients but it is also important to obtain a large reproductive-vegetative dry weight ratio to maximize the fruit yield.
