Anbauwürdigkeit von Wintererbsen - Ein Vergleich zu Sommererbsen in Rein- und Gemengesaat unter den Bedingungen des Ökologischen Landbaus Organic Eprints
Urbatzka, Peer.

Indicators of weed competition on Organic Winter Wheat Organic Eprints
Casagrande, Marion; David, Christophe; Valentin Morison, Muriel; Jeuffroy, Marie-Hélène.
Organic winter wheat production is limited by climatic and agronomic factors, including weed competition. The incidence of weeds on yield limitation can be characterized through various early indicators to predict weed occurrence and competition. A network of 10 fields of organic winter wheat was implemented in the South East of France in 2005-2006. Results showed that weed density, dynamics and diversity are good indicators for weed occurrence and competition.

Rækkedyrkning giver nye muligheder i planteavlen Organic Eprints
Olesen, Jørgen E..
The greatest challenge for achieving higher and more stable yields in organic arable farming is linked to adequate nitrogen supply and the control of aggressive weeds. The challenges are enhanced in Denmark by the ambition to phase out the possibility of importing conventional manure. Cultivation of grass-clover in the crop rotation increases the nitrogen supply and reduces the weed pressure, but it also reduced overall crop yield in comparison to more intensive plant cultivation. A solution can therefore be to ensure nitrogen supply through grain legumes combined with effective legume-based cover crops in a row-cropping systems allowing effective weed control and good establishment of cover crops.

Clerc, Maurice; Klaiss, Matthias; Messmer, Monika; Arncken, Christine; Dierauer, Hansueli; Hegglin, Django; Böhler, Daniel.

Row cropping – Weed control in spring cereal grains Organic Eprints
Petersen, Maja Eline; Bertelsen, Inger.
By increasing the row spacing from 12.5 cm to 25 cm in your spring cereal grains it will be possible to both carry out weed control and simultaneously establish a nitrogen-fixing catch crop between the grain rows. As long as the number of plants is maintained when increasing the row spacing and crop damage is avoided, a row spacing up to 30 cm will not result in yield loss. Weed control between the rows results in more than 75% reduction in number of weeds, although aggressive species were reduced less. Weed control between the catch crop rows after harvest reduces perennial weeds.

Svært at holde kvikken i skak Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, Ilse A..

Growing oganic cereals in Northern Ireland - disease and weed problems Organic Eprints
Mercer, P C.
The small organic arable sector in N. Ireland could be expanded to provide winter feed for cattle. Spring barley or wheat are likely to be the most suitable crops as they are reported to have fewer weed and disease problems than winter cereals. Trials from 2003 –05 on weed control showed no consistent effect of cultivar, although higher seed rates reduced weed biomass and tended to increase yield, albeit marginally. Trials on disease control showed no synergistic effects of two- or three-way cultivar mixtures over single cultivars, although disease levels were generally low. Particularly in spring barley, results from mixtures tended to be averages of those of individual components. It is suggested that it may be more advantageous and practical to use the...

Ergebnisse einer Umfrage zur Anbautechnik im ökologischen Sojabohnenanbau in Bayern und Österreich Organic Eprints
Jobst, Florian; Urbatzka, Peer; Demmel, Markus.
Cropping of soybeans is getting more and more important in organic farming. Especially weed control is of particular importance. The aim of a telephone survey was the summary of practical experience in Austria and Bavaria. Most farmers are still experimenting with the right method for weed control and seeding in Bavaria. Austrian farmers are more successful in soybean cultivation because they have more experience. In Austria soybeans are often sown with precision seed drills and cultivated with a strategy of harrow and hoeing techniques. Because of growing Experience can increase yields and success in weed control, this experience should be strongly considered for newcomer.

Cost-efective inter-row hoeing and band spraying systems for weed control in integrates and organic cereal production Organic Eprints
Background Early in a season the crop covers only part of total field area. Treating that area uniformly can therefore be wasteful. An ability to differentiate between crop rows and inter-row spaces would provide opportunities for increased treatment efficacy, reduced environmental impact and reduced input costs. Banded treatments on, or between crop rows, requires a level of precision that is difficult to achieve in practice. So, despite the potential advantages inter-row cultivation and band spraying are limited to use in high value crops. Recent advances pioneered by some of the consortium partners now offer automatic guidance systems for inter-row cultivation. These are currently used in intensive vegetable production and by those growing cereals...

Schochow, Dipl.-Ing. agr. Martin; Paulsen, Dr. Hans Marten.
Weeds are one of the main problems in organic farming. Mixed cropping systems are a good alternative to deprive sunlight from the weeds by obtaining a compact crop. The control of efficiency is one subject of the BÖL-project “Mixed cropping systems with oilseeds”. A differential measurement of photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) above canopy and inside the crop characterizes weed competition of mixed cropping systems.

Learning from a long-term crop rotation experiment Organic Eprints
Olesen, Jørgen E.; Askegaard, Margrethe; Rasmussen, Ilse A..
A crop rotation experiment was established in 1996/97 at three locations representing differ-ent soil types and climates. Three factors were tested: i) crop rotation with different propor-tions of N2-fixing crops, ii) with and without a catch crop, and iii) with and without animal manure. A green manure crop increased yields in the following cereal crops, but at the rota-tional level, total yields were larger in crop rotations without a green manure crop. There were positive effects of animal manure and catch crops on yield. However, except for the coarse sandy soil, the yield effects of catch crops and animal manure decreased over time when a grass-clover green manure was included in the rotation. The problems with perennial weeds increased over time...

The Role of Mulching with Residues of two Medicinal Plants on Weed Diversity in Maize Organic Eprints
Kamariari, Iliana; Papastylianou, Panagiota; Bilalis, Dimitrios; Travlos, Ilias; Kakabouki, Ioanna.
In the present study, there were studied the effects of mulch with the residues of two aromatic and medicinal plants (Sideritis scardica Griseb and Echinacea purpurea) on weed flora and first growth of a maize crop. A field and a pot experiment were conducted at Agricultural University of Athens. In particular, the field experiment was conducted under organic conditions, while in the pot experiment special attention was paid to the first growth of maize plants under the effect of plant residues. Our results showed that there was a significant effect of plant residues on weed flora. The incorporation of Sideritis sp. residues resulted to a lower number of different weed species (low richness) and an intense effect on most weed species. During the early...
