The fishery for benthic species (Monkfish, Megrim, Rays, etc ... ) represents for the surrounder countries of the Celtic Sea and the Bay of Biscaye one of the most important activities . An estimate of the discards of the main species resulting from the sorting practice onboard of the trawlers participating in this fishery was made in 1985 and 1991. it was concluded that an important quantity of juveniles of Rays, Megrim and Monkfish are discarded each year causing an important mortality. The aim of the present paper is to present the preliminary results of a selectivity grid fixed on a bottom trawl to limit as possible the discards. Three different grids were tested at sea during surveys with different results. The major problem is due to difference in... |

Deficiencies in basic ecological information on uncommon and endangered elasmobranch fishes impair the assessment of their ecological role in marine ecosystems. In this study, we examined the feeding ecology (diet composition and trophic level) and trophic relationships of 22 elasmobranchs (2 Carcharhiniformes, 1 Hexanchiformes, 1 Lamniformes, 3 Myliobatiformes, 6 Rajiformes, 6 Squaliformes and 3 Torpediniformes) present in the western Mediterranean Sea. To obtain a comprehensive view of the feeding ecology of these species, we combined different approaches: stable isotope analyses (delta C-13 and delta N-15 values), stomach content analyses and published sources. Our results revealed differences in feeding strategies among elasmobranch groups: skates... |

Stingrays of the Potamotrygonidae family are a singular group of Neotropical ichthyofauna. Although ancient reports exist about the group, there are still many questions that need to be clarified, such as the biology of the species that occur in the Paraná-Paraguay River system. In the present work, the diet of Potamotrygon falkneri and Potamotrygon motoro, captured in the Upper Paraná River, downstream from the Engenheiro Souza Dias Hydroelectric Power Station (UHE Jupiá), was analyzed. Both species showed a diversified diet, consisting of 14 food items, including Mollusca, Crustacea, Insecta and fish, with the predominance in diversity and abundance of aquatic insects. Only one individual of each species ingested fish. Potamotrygon motoro consumed mainly... |
