Analyse économique de la pêcherie crevettière de Guyane Française ArchiMer
Gilly, B.; Cochet, Y..
The french Guyana sh rimp fishery has grown from the sixties, following the development of US a nd Japanese fleets. The EEZ delimitation in 1977 and the french policy towards promotion of french vessels allowed, since 1980, the emergence of french ship-owners. The paper analyses the recent economie evolution of the enterprises and underlines first the importance of this activity within regional economy, and second its dependance on imported inputs. The french policy leads to an incrcase of the share of the net added value that remains in the depanment, but it also come to a poor financial status of the french ship-owners. The data collected and given in this paper will be used to feed a bio-economic model o f the shrimp fishery.

The impact of the wine industry on hotels and restaurants in Walla Walla AgEcon
Storchmann, Karl.
Walla Walla enjoys the fastest growing wine industry in the State of Washington, if not in the whole U.S. This paper examines the impact of this extraordinary growth on the revenue of regional hotels and restaurants. Employing a dynamic quarterly panel model at the county level we show that the regional reputation as high quality wine county, as expressed by critical wine points in the national wine press, has a significant effect on the tourism industry. Less than 17% of all restaurant and approximately 40% of all hotel revenue is tied to the wine cluster (2007). However, regional reputation is short-living and needs to be constantly re-earned.

A Review of Municipal Bond Issues in Michigan AgEcon
Scorsone, Eric; Plerhoples, Christina.
Municipal bonds have recently been of national interest and Michigan’s strained economy over the past decade has made bond issuance in the state of particular interest to a variety of stakeholders. Given the close connection between municipal bonds and property taxes, the fall-off in the housing market has placed significant strain on bonds within the state. This paper reviews the Michigan municipal bond condition and develops a new debt assessment indicator system. This system was tested using over 700 Michigan local governments. Based on this indicator system, a number of communities are experiencing significant fiscal stress. However, further examination reveals that at least some of these communities have in place short term plans to address such...

The Regional Multi-Agent Simulator (RegMAS): assessing the impact of the "Health Check" in an Italian region AgEcon
Lobianco, Antonello; Esposti, Roberto.
Agent-based models (AMB) allow to conceive social systems as the result of individually-acting agents. When they are applied to agriculture, they can simulate the fundamental behaviour at the micro-level of the individual farmers, without the need of aggregating them in “representative” agents. RegMAS (Regional Multi Agent Simulator) is an open-source spatially explicit multi-agent model framework specifically designed for long-term simulations of effects of policies on agricultural systems. Using iterated conventional optimisation problems as agents' behavioural rules, it allows for a bidirectional integration between geophysical and social models where spatially distributed characteristics are taken into account in the linear programming problem of the...

Economia política da disputa por terras em Minas Gerais AgEcon
Araujo Junior, Ari Francisco de; Shikida, Claudio; Alvarenga, Patricia Silva.
The article analyzes the determinants of the probability of dispute over land (conflicts, occupations and settlement projects) in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. Through the use of a logit model, we found that the main influences are political and economical ones. Apparently, the behavior of the agrarian reform’s supporters follows the political incentive, with fewer occurrences of conflicts in towns governed by political allies. By other hand, the economical determinants - degree of poverty and the economic growth - have negative impacts on it.

WILL SOUTHERN AGRICULTURE PLAY A ROLE IN A CARBON MARKET? AgEcon
Zeuli, Kimberly A.; Skees, Jerry R..
While a carbon market offers substantial opportunities for US agriculture, regional differences in such a market are often ignored. This paper focuses on the advantages and challenges for agriculture in the South. The potential of two promising options are analyzed: conversion from cropland to forests and greater use of conversation tillage. It is argued that the right institutional arrangements can overcome three fundamental challenges to an efficient carbon market: transaction costs, risk, and perverse incentives. Some examples are given, such as the use of a farmer-owned organization and the provision of land use and carbon information by the government.
