Metanotal gland of the genus Eidmanacris (Grylloidea, Phalangopsidae): taxonomic importance Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Prado,Rogilene Aparecida; Fontanetti,Carmem S..
The present study compares the metanotal gland through scanning electron microscopy in five species of Eidmanacris: E. corumbatai Garcia, 1998, E. alboannulata (Piza, 1960), E. dissimilis Desutter-Grandcolas, 1995, E. larvaeformis (Chopard, 1938) and Eidmanacris sp. The general external configuration of the gland was determined by the presence of two median projections with apical opening and a cluster of bristles just above these projections. Although there is a general pattern for this gland, each species has its own pattern, which can be defined mainly by the arrangement of the bristles and the position of the median projections. Our results suggest the taxonomical importance of these structures, which should be better analyzed when describing species...

Reproductive success and female preference in the amazonian cichlid angel fish, Pterophyllum scalare (Lichtenstein, 1823) Neotropical Ichthyology
Cacho,Maria do Socorro R. F.; Chellappa,Sathyabama; Yamamoto,Maria Emília.
The angel fish, Pterophyllum scalare is a cichlid native to the Amazon Basin of Brazil and is exported as an ornamental fish. In this study the importance of the experience and previous reproductive success of males in mate selection was investigated. In order to investigate reproductive experience, six pairs of males (experienced and inexperienced) and six females were used. Males were placed in an aquarium, where one female was released. Mate selection was verified by the time spent by a female near one of the males. To evaluate reproductive success, six pairs of males were tested, each pair consisting of a successful male and an unsuccessful one. Again, time spent with one of the males was considered as an indication of preference by the female. Each...

A novel neuropeptide Y neuronal pathway linking energy state and reproductive behavior OAK
Muroi, Yoshikage; Ishii, Toshiaki.
Animals consume energy for reproduction, as well as survival. Excess or insufficient energy investment into reproduction, respectively, threatens the survival of parents or leads to the failure of reproduction. Management of energy consumption in reproduction is important, not only for the success of the process, but also for the survival of the parents. Reproductive behaviors, such as mating and parental behavior, are indispensable for achieving each event of reproduction including gametogamy, parturition, and lactation. Therefore, reproductive behavior is one of the important factors in managing energy consumption for reproduction. Orexigenic and anorexigenic molecules in the hypothalamus have been implicated in the regulation of reproductive functions....

Breeding biology and advertisement call of the horned leaf-frog, Proceratophrys appendiculata (Amphibia: Anura: Odontophrynidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Dias,Pedro Henrique dos Santos; Hepp,Fabio Silva Fernandes dos Santos; Silva,Ana Maria Paulino Telles de Carvalho e; Silva,Sergio Potsch de Carvalho e.
We describe the breeding biology and the advertisement call of the horned leaf-frog, Proceratophrys appendiculata (Günther, 1873) in the Parque Nacional da Serra dos Órgãos, municipality of Teresópolis. The reproductive period of P. appendiculata is short and is associated with the end of the winter and the beginning of the spring, when males call night and day under large rocks in sandy bottom rock streams. The amplexus is axillary and one female laid about 656 viscous eggs. The advertisement call of P. appendiculata is unique among congeners. The call lasts approximately two seconds, with about 85 pulses/call at a rate of 45 pulses/s and frequency around 0.620 kHz. It is one of the longest calls and lowest in dominant frequency. Moreover, the call of P....

Bionomia de Monoeca xanthopyga Harter-Marques, Cunha & Moure (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Tapinotaspidini) no Planalto das Araucárias, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil Zoologia
Cunha,Rodrigo da; Blochtein,Betina.
A study of the life history of the solitary bee Monoeca xanthopyga, was conducted at the Araucária Plateau, at the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The study focused the seasonality, sexual behavior, females activity during nest building, the exploited plant resources and the associated parasitoids. Three nest aggregations of M. xanthopyga built in clay soil with few plant cover or none at all, were studied on the Parque Nacional dos Aparados da Serra, located in Cambará do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul State. The nests were randomly distributed in areas up to eight square meters in size and reach a maximum density of 57 nests per square meter. The only one generation occurred from January to April. The immature stayed in diapausa in the prepupa stage during eight to...

Observações sobre o comportamento de Liolaemus occipitalis em cativeiro (Sauria, Tropiduridae) Zoologia
Bujes,Clóvis Souza; Verrastro,Laura.
Liolaemus occipitalis (Boulenger, 1885) is an abundant lizard lbundalong lhe coastal dunes of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Fourteen individuais were manually captured in the dunes of Quintão beach (Palmares do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul) and studied in captivity from 23/VII/92 to 30/VII/93. They were kept in a terrarium with sand substrate and vegetation collected in their habitat. Snout-vent length (SVL) and wcighted were measured weekly. They received Tenebrio molitor (Linnaeus, 1758) worms as food; water was abundant. Combats between males for food and territory, and other behavioral displays were observed, like copulation and nesting behaviors. Growth curves for each lizard were analyzed.

Comportamento reprodutivo de Sporophila lineola (Linnaeus) (Passeriformes, Emberizidae) Zoologia
Marcondes-Machado,Luiz Octavio.
This study on the biology and reproductive behavior of Sporophila lineola (Linnaeus, 1758) was carried in a Citrus reticulata Blanco plantation near Campinas, Brazil. A blind was used for observations near the four nests. These were built on the branches of C. reticulata, and were made of grass roots. The clutch varies from two to three eggs. Both male and female or only female, feed the nestings with insects such as dragonfly and caterpillar, carried across their bill.

Mate recognition in Acanthagrion truncatum (Odonata: Coenagrionidae) - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v35i3.16138 Biological Sciences
Guillermo-Ferreira, Rhainer; Universidade de São Paulo; Del-Claro, Kleber; Universidade Federal de Uberlândia.
Sexual and species recognition, along with sexual color dimorphism, play an important role in the reproduction of many animal species. In this article, it was investigated if males of the dimorphic Neotropical damselfly Acanthagrion truncatum are able to recognize mates and differentiate them between co-specific males and hetero-specific females of sympatric species. The results showed misguided mating attempts from males towards other males and Homeoura chelifera females. They also seem able to recognize A. lancea and Telebasis carmesina females as hetero-specifics. This study support the hypothesis that male-male interactions are misdirected sexual behavior and that sympatric morphologically similarspecies may represent visual interference for mate...
