Carex and Uncinia (Cyperaceae, Cariceae) from the Juan Fernández archipelago, Chile Darwiniana
Wheeler,Gerald A..
Ten members of the tribe Cariceae (Cyperaceae) occur on the Juan Fernández Archipelago: four species of Carex and six of Uncinia. Eight of the ten species occur on Alejandro Selkirk Island (= Masafuera; 50 km2) while four are known from Robinson Crusoe Island (= Masatierra; 48 km2). Carex fernandezensis, C. stuessyi, Uncinia aspericaulis, and U. macloviformis are newly described from the archipelago and all are endemic to the islands. Only two species, Carex berteroniana and Uncinia douglasii, both endemics, are of frequent occurrence and each occurs on both islands. Another endemic, Uncinia costata, is known only from the type locality on Alejandro Selkirk. The three remaining species, Uncinia phleoides, U. tenuis, and Carex phalaroides, the last here...

First description of the micro-habitat selection pattern of the island endemic Juan Fernandez Tit-tyrant Gayana
Soto,Gerardo E; Vergara,Pablo M; Hahn,Ingo J; Pérez-Hernández,Christian G; Lizama,Marlene E; Baumeister,Julia; Pizarro,Jaime.
The level of specialization of endemic island birds to their native habitats could contribute importantly to increase their extinction risk. We used abundance obtained from mist-netting and radio telemetry data from one individual to determine the micro-habitat use pattern of Juan Fernandez Tit-tyrants (Anairetes fernandezianus) within native forest. The tracked male tit-tyrant established its home range exclusively in core native forest areas. Regression models of abundance and Resource Utilization Functions showed strong micro-habitat preferences of tit-tyrants. The abundance and utilization probabilities of tit-tyrants declined with distance to exotic shrub and increased with distance to human created gaps. Natural heterogeneity in micro-habitat...

Dental Morphological Markers as a Proxy for Ethnicity in Robinson Crusoe Islanders International Journal of Morphology
Villanueva,Pía; Quevedo,Mónica; de Barbieri,Zulema; Piñeiro,Soledad; Herrero,Carolina; Fernández,María Angélica; Palomino,Hernán.
Chilean Robinson Crusoe Island is a semi-isolated location with unusually high rates of both consanguinity and language disorder. The current population of 633 inhabitants is descended almost exclusively from the colonization at the end of the 19th century, as there were few preceding immigrations to the island. This study investigates the genetic composition and degree of miscegenation within the island population, using dental morphological markers. The universe of island children was studied (n= 128, 3 to 15 years of age) using clinical exams, dental cast, and identification of each individual within a previously-constructed extensive genealogy for the island. The frequencies for Carabelli's cusp (61.7%), shovel-shaped incisor (9.4%), and sixth cusp...
