Description of the karyotype of Rhagomys rufescens Thomas, 1886 (Rodentia, Sigmodontinae) from Southern Brazil Atlantic forest Genet. Mol. Biol.
Testoni,André Filipe; Althoff,Sérgio Luiz; Nascimento,André Paulo; Steiner-Souza,Francisco; Sbalqueiro,Ives José.
Rhagomys rufescens (Rodentia: Sigmodontinae) is an endemic species of the Atlantic forest from Southern and Southeastern Brazil. Some authors consider Rhagomys as part of the tribe Thomasomyini; but its phylogenetic relationships remain unclear. Chromosomal studies on eight specimens of Rhagomys rufescens revealed a diploid number of 2n = 36 and a number of autosome arms FN = 50. GTG, CBG and Ag-NOR banding and CMA3/DAPI staining were performed on metaphase chromosomes. Eight biarmed and nine acrocentric pairs were found in the karyotype of this species. The X and Y chromosomes were both acrocentric. Most of the autosomes and the sex chromosomes showed positive C-bands in the pericentromeric region. The X chromosome showed an additional heterochromatic...

Testing the Rio Doce as a riverine barrier in shaping the Atlantic rainforest population divergence in the rodent Akodon cursor Genet. Mol. Biol.
Colombi,Victor Hugo; Lopes,Silvia Ramira; Fagundes,Valéria.
Akodon cursor occurs in dense rainforest from northern (8º S) to southern (26º S) states along the Atlantic coast of Brazil. Previous karyological and molecular data revealed two major clades, one including northern (8-15º S) and the other southern (19-26º S) populations. The center of geographic distribution (15-20º S), which included the state of Espírito Santo, was identified as a potential vicariance region. Since river barriers are among the most discussed models in the study of Neotropical diversification, we examined whether the Rio Doce (19º S) plays an important role in shaping the population genetic divergence of A. cursor by including samples from Espírito Santo in the analysis. Our results showed that the northern-southern division region in...

Hidden heterochromatin: characterization in the Rodentia species Cricetus cricetus, Peromyscus eremicus (Cricetidae) and Praomys tullbergi (Muridae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Paço,Ana; Adega,Filomena; Guedes-Pinto,Henrique; Chaves,Raquel.
The use of in situ restriction endonuclease (RE) (which cleaves DNA at specific sequences) digestion has proven to be a useful technique in improving the dissection of constitutive heterochromatin (CH), and in the understanding of the CH evolution in different genomes. In the present work we describe in detail the CH of the three Rodentia species, Cricetus cricetus, Peromyscus eremicus (family Cricetidae) and Praomys tullbergi (family Muridae) using a panel of seven REs followed by C-banding. Comparison of the amount, distribution and molecular nature of C-positive heterochromatin revealed molecular heterogeneity in the heterochromatin of the three species. The large number of subclasses of CH identified in Praomys tullbergi chromosomes indicated that the...

Multiple interstitial ribosomal sites (NORs) in the Brazilian squirrel Sciurus aestuans ingrami (Rodentia, Sciuridae) with 2n = 40: an overview of Sciurus cytogenetics Genet. Mol. Biol.
Fagundes,Valéria; Christoff,Alexandre Uarth; Amaro-Ghilard,Renata Cecília; Scheibler,Daniel R.; Yonenaga-Yassuda,Yatiyo.
This is the first time the karyotype of the Brazilian squirrel Sciurusaestuans ingrami, with 2n = 40, is described. The karyotype of this species comprises 18 pairs of biarmed and one minute pair of acrocentric autosomes, a medium-sized submetacentric X and a medium-sized acrocentric Y. Four pairs have an interstitial secondary constriction, co-located with nucleolar organizer regions (NORs), identified by silver-staining technique and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) with ribosomal 18S/28S probes. The occurrence of multiple interstitial NORs is rare in rodents, and this is one of the few examples, identified by a molecular cytogenetics approach.

Karyological geographic variation of Oligoryzomys nigripes Olfers, 1818 (Rodentia, Cricetidae) from Brazil Genet. Mol. Biol.
Paresque,Roberta; Silva,Maria José de Jesus; Yonenaga-Yassuda,Yatiyo; Fagundes,Valéria.
The karyotypes of 85 specimens of Oligoryzomys nigripes (Rodentia, Sigmodontinae) collected in the Cerrado and Atlantic Forest of seven states of Brazil were analyzed. Eighty four specimens presented a karyotype with 2n = 62 and one individual had 2n = 61 due to a monosomy of the X chromosome. High levels of intra- and inter-population karyotypic variability, due to sex chromosomes heteromorphisms and pericentric inversions in four autosomes (pairs 2, 3, 4 and 8), led to a variation of the autosomal arm numbers (fundamental number, FN) from 78 to 82. Synaptonemal complex analyses revealed normal meiosis in males heterozygous for pericentric inversions. We found 39 different cytotypes, 27 of which are herein described for the first time. A literature survey...

Small mammal distributional patterns in Northwestern Argentina Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Sandoval,María L.; Escalante,Tania; Barquez,Rubén.
ABSTRACT Quantitative evaluations of species distributional congruence allow evaluating previously proposed biogeographic regionalization and even identify undetected areas of endemism. The geographic scenery of Northwestern Argentina offers ideal conditions for the study of distributional patterns of species since the boundaries of a diverse group of biomes converge in a relatively small region, which also includes a diverse fauna of mammals. In this paper we applied a grid-based explicit method in order to recognize Patterns of Distributional Congruence (PDCs) and Areas of Endemism (AEs), and the species (native but non-endemic and endemic, respectively) that determine them. Also, we relate these distributional patterns to traditional biogeographic...

Cortés-Delgado,Natalia; Pérez-Torres,Jairo; Hoyos,Julio Mario.
Transparency technique to demonstrate cartilage and skeleton has been used from years 70. This consists basically of the muscle digestion through an enzyme (trypsine), and the staining of cartilage and skeleton using alcian blue and alizarin red on specimens previously fixed to formalin. This technique can be used to study the state of the cartilage and the bones in different stages of the development and to observe abnormalitys. Also it can be used to demonstrate museum specimen skeleton preserved in liquid. In this article is showed the application of this technique for the first time in rodents and adult bats, besides some annotations to optimize the procedure.

Gómez Villafañe,Isabel E.; Muschetto,Emiliano; Busch,María.
The aim of this work was to study the range of movements of Norway rats in two poultry farms in Exaltación de la Cruz, Buenos Aires Province. Three female and three male rats were followed by radio-telemetry. The mean home range was 0.024 ha (0.0024 to 0.0525 ha) and the mean maximum distance between localization points was 33.70 m (10 m to 66 m). The maximum daily movement registered was 65 m. Individuals captured near sheds or pigpens did shorter displacements than those captured on the perimeter of each farm. Our results indicate that Norway rats moved only short distances in poultry farms.

The role of Cerradomys Subflavus (Rodentia, Cricetidae) as seed predator and disperser of the palm Allagoptera arenaria Mastozool. neotrop.
Grenha,Viviane; Macedo,Margarete V.; Pires,Alexandra S.; Monteiro,Ricardo F..
Small rodents are among the most abundant vertebrate seed predators in the tropics and palm fruits are a rich source of energy for them. Allagoptera arenaria is a nurse plant species at restinga vegetation in southeastern Brazil. Forty-five adult A. arenaria were marked to estimate fruit crop size and seed predation by rodents. Two trapping sessions were carried out to identify the rodent seed predators. In addition, a fruit removal experiment was conducted to investigate the role of rodents as seed dispersers. Of the 7409 seeds collected, 24% were damaged by rodents. Predation rates ranged from 0 to 64% per plant and the number and the proportion of damaged seeds increased significantly with crop size. In the removal experiments, 64% of the fruits were...

Variación morfológica de Oligoryzomys longicaudatus magellanicus (rodentia: sigmodontinae) al oeste de los campos de hielo patagónico sur en Chile Mastozool. neotrop.
Guzmán,Jonathan A; Ortiz,Juan Carlos; Cañón,Carola.
