Social learning in collaborative settings can play an important role in reducing water management problems. In this paper we analyze the nature and effects of these learning processes in an international collaborative setting. We assert that social interactions contribute to substantive and relational learning, which involves changes in the motivations, cognitions and resources of individual actors. In addition, interactions may contribute to social learning, which is the case when actors develop collective outcomes on which further collaboration can be based. We use these theoretical insights to examine a water project in which Dutch and Romanian actors collaborate. Their interactions changed their individual motivations, cognitions, and resources and led... |

Feeding of the S. sprattus was studied comparatively with the dynamics of the zooplanktonic trophic base. In April, the sprat consumed 1,459 t of zooplankton, especially Acartia clausi (84 per cent). Zooplanktonic productivity was 30 per cent due to Acartia clausi, and the sprat consumed 56 per cent of this copepod production. In April, the wt growth of the sprat was 115 t. In May, the sprat consumed 6.201 t of zooplankton, that resulted in a fish production of 492 t. A clausi contributed 36.41 per cent to the zooplankton production and the sprat fed on copepods at a level of 93 per cent. In June, only 1,094 t of zooplankton resulted in a fish production of 87 t. Zooplanktonic production was 60 per cent due to A. clausi, and only 12 per cent of this was... |

Romanian legislation regarding the organic agro-food products, harmonized with community requirements, intends to create an organic agriculture according to the European systems. In the period 2004-2005 the stimulation of organic agriculture development was achieved generally through the accordance of subsidies on organic product over the level production realized in conventional system. The year 2006 bring important modifications in the subsidies accordance starting with the principle of decoupled subsidies from the volume of production. Diversification of the organic subsidies system and extinction for conversion steps too, can contribute to the increases of the certified organic farms and their profitability altogether representing a real support for... |

The purpose of this paper is to provide an understanding of corporate risk management practices in Romanian companies, by investigating the risk management approaches Romanian companies take. Our main findings are that Romanian managers are not aware of the magnitude of exposure their companies have to various types of risk – hazard, operational, financial and strategic risks, while they are able to manage rather well all these risks, even the ones that have the lowest impact on the business. At the same time, risk management systems employed by Romanian companies are rather inarticulate and based on traditional approaches towards risk management, which might represent by itself a major source of risk, given the complexity of the business environment they... |

Applied general equilibrium modelling represents a powerful tool for assessing future likely economic changes due to upcoming or hypothesised policy shocks such as those brought about by EU enlargement. It entails the main advantage of considering the complex simultaneous linkages, interactions and feedback effects between various sectors, institutions and factor resources within an economy, as well as the inter- and intra-industry trade links with other economies across the globe. This technical paper develops a general equilibrium model applied to Romania (GEMAR) with an emphasis on the agricultural and food processing activities. A simple simulation example is then given for illustrative purposes. More extensive use of GEMAR will be made in other... |

In Romanias farming sector are currently working 3.6 million people, representing 32.1% of the total countrys labour force. Yet, they contribute by only 8.5% to total GDP (2005). Besides the sectoral restructuring efforts, there are at present social problems that have to be solved up, namely the diminution of the huge agricultural labour force and the improvement of life quality in the rural areas. The importance of completing the tasks that remained uncompleted during the transition period, namely the privatization of land still in state ownership, competitiveness improvement, development of a market-compatible institutional framework became a pressing need at present, in spite of the many difficulties. |

Join the European Union club implies, among many other policy changes, full integration of Romania's expected to have significant implications for domestic farmers and food processors. The paper constructs a single-country Applied General Equilibrium (AGE) model to investigate the impact of tariff border adjustments on changes in relative prices, production and trade patterns associated with fifteen local agro-food activities. Moreover, the modeling work identifies those agro-food sectors that have the potential to benefit the most from EU enlargement in terms of output effects given that Romanian producers are capable of fully responding to the incentives provided with integration. These mainly include (bovine) live animals and meat products, sugar and... |

This research aims at shedding empirical light on the relative efficiency of small-scale maize producers in Romania. Farmers in transition countries still face heavily distorted price systems resulting from imperfect market conditions and socioeconomic and institutional constraints. To capture such distortions we formulate a stochastic shadow-cost frontier model to investigate the systematic input-specific allocative inefficiency. We further adjust the underlying cost frontier by incorporating shadow price corrections and subsequently reveal evidence on farm specific technical inefficiency. Different models are estimated due to the imposition of curvature correctness and the effects on the individual efficiency estimates are shown. The empirical results... |

Aiming the EU accession put new and significant challenges to the candiadte countries' policies, and the problem of the inclusion of their agricultural sectors was among the most difficult ones. AGMEMOD is an econometric model of the EU-25 + 2 candidate countries (Romania and Bulgaria) agricultural sector. This poster presents the baseline and the scenario results for several key agricultural products of Romania's model developed as part of AGMEMOD model. The model is an econometric, dynamic, multi-product partial equilibrium comodity model. The target of this approach is to evaluate the impact of the Common Agricultural Policy reforms upon the country's agricultural sector in perspective of its accession to the EU. The selected commodities are: soft... |
