ABSTRACT Mechanical properties of agricultural products are essential for a proper project design or processing equipment dimensioning, as well as for establishment of parameters on the supported load. An experiment was set up in a completely randomized design, with five treatments (continuous and intermittent drying under 4, 8, 12, and 16 h of rest period) and four replications, to evaluate the effect of intermittent drying. Corn kernels of the cultivar Cargo TL were harvested with a moisture content of 25.37% wb and submitted to drying in an experimental fixed bed dryer set to a temperature of 100 °C and an airflow of 1.5 m3 min-1 m-2. Design and Development of Walnut Cracking Machine CIGR Journal

A motorized walnut cracking machine was designed and developed to overcome the drudgery and huge time involved in traditional walnut cracking and the prototype was evaluated under three different levels of shell moisture content (db) (25-30%, 15-20% and 8-12%) and three different levels of roller speeds (25 rpm, 43 rpm and 69 rpm) of the cracking unit. The main components of machine involves motor, frame, hopper, conveying tray, cracking unit, conveying chute and collecting bin. The working principle of cracking unit is based on the compression of the walnut between two rollers rotating in opposite direction. Moisture dependent mechanical and thermal properties of Locust bean (Parkia biglobosa) CIGR Journal

 The mechanical and thermal properties of African locust bean (Parkia biglobosa) seeds were investigated as a function of moisture content in the range of 5.9%–28.2% dry basis (d.b.).  These properties are required for the engineering design of equipment for handling and processing locust bean.  Universal Testing Machine was used to determine the mechanical properties at 5 mm/min load rating transversely.  Normal and shear stresses were determined for 200–500 g loads at 100 g interval.  Specific heat and thermal conductivity were determined using the method of mixtures and steady-state heat flow method respectively.  Linear decreases in rupture force (214.42–129.86 N) and rupture energy (109.17–73.46 N mm) were recorded, while deformation of the seed...

Mechanical properties of bean grains (BRSMG Majestic) coated with carnauba wax Ciência Rural

ABSTRACT: The objective of this research was to determine the mechanical properties of beans (BRSMG Majestuoso) coated with carnauba wax solution. Grains with 0.1481 (d.b.) moisture content was used. Treatments 0, 1 and 2 were respectively defined as the control sample, application of the wax diluted 1/1 (carnauba wax solution/water) and application of carnauba wax without dilution. Uniaxial compression tests were performed in the universal test apparatus, TA HD Texture Analyzer with 500 N load cell. Compression tests were carried out during the storage period of in-nature grains, in those that underwent the hydration process at 40 and 50 °C of temperature and in grains during the cooking process.
