The Taimyr wild reindeer herd, i.e., caribou (Rangifer tarandus), is one of the most important wildlife resources in the Russian Far North and may constitute the largest migratory Rangifer herd in the world. Over the last 60 years the herd has undergone a recovery from low numbers in the 1940s, reaching high densities by 1970 that concerned wildlife managers and domestic husbandry herds, with an 11.7% annual growth rate. At that time an aggressive commercial harvest of the herd was implemented, and organized wolf control was initiated with the goal of stabilizing herd numbers and injecting needed economic activity into the region. These actions dampened the rate of increase throughout the 1970s and 1980s to a 3.0% annual growth rate. From 1991, after the... |

Forest certification, developed in the early 1990s, is a process in which independent assessors grant use of the certification label to producers who meet certain environmental and social criteria set for their forest products. This label was quickly seen to offer a market advantage and to signal corporate social and environmental responsibility. This paper focuses on international norms pertaining to environmental and indigenous rights, as manifested in cases of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)- and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC)-compatible certification, and how these norms have been applied domestically and perceived locally in different states. Case studies are drawn from northern Sweden, northern Finland, and three... |

Abstract. The Nepticulidae of the Russian provinces (oblasts) Ul’yanovsk, Samara, Saratov, Volgograd, Astrakhan and Chelyabinsk and the Kalmyk Republic are listed. We record 60 species, including two only previously recorded, 28 species only on the basis of leafmines (indicated with an *). Seventeen species are recorded as new for Russia. Eleven of these are reported on the basis of adults: Stigmella glutinosae (Stainton, 1858), S. ulmiphaga (Preissecker, 1942), S. thuringiaca (Petry, 1904), S. rolandi Van Nieukerken, 1990, S. hybnerella (Hübner, 1813), Trifurcula (Trifurcula) subnitidella (Duponchel, 1843), T. A new species of Latrunculia with unusual properties is described from Kurile Island, Sea of Okhotsk, Russia. Although this species is structurally very similar in choanosomal architecture to all known species of Latrunculia, it differs from other Latrunculia in both the structure of the anisodiscorhabd microscleres and by possessing terminally spined styles. It is the first Latrunculia to be described with terminally spined anisostyles. Furthermore, the characteristic anisodiscorhabds of this new species closely resemble microfossils found in Oligocene deposits from New Zealand. The similarity between the new species and the fossil New Zealand species, along with the strong differences in spiculation from other Latrunculia species, suggest a Tethyan... |

In competitive market dairy production will shift to the regions with the best conditions. In the Soviet paradigm dairy production was evenly distributed throughout the country, what was caused by extremely low transportation prices and by differentiated by regions procurement prices. Thus, there was no specialized zones of dairy production. The start of economic liberalization in Russia was followed by the process of disintegration of the country's common economic space. Reforms entailed an increase in transportation costs and regional specialization based on comparative advantages of a certain commodity production. Specialized dairy producing zones started to emerge. This paper attempts to determine these zones in Russia in the nearest future. The... |

Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in December 1991, Russia experienced a series of economic shocks, resulting in large decreases in output but limited change in employment. Using information contained in a nationally representative longitudinal survey of Russian citizens, this research analyzes the labor market behavior of individuals from 1992 to 1996 during the transition to a market economy. Under Markovian assumptions, the pattern of transitions between labor market states is identified. Results indicate that the state sector has declined, but that the emerging private sector has played a limited role in alleviating growing unemployment. The probability of losing a job increased 75 percent from 1992 to 1996 while the re-employment... |

This paper examines the effect of the future developments of Russian and Ukrainian agricultural sectors and their impact on the world market prices for arable crops. Employed in the study is AGMEMOD, a partial equilibrium economic model of EU agriculture at the Member State level that has been extended by Russia and Ukraine to gain quantitative insights. Vital for the project has also been the integration of an endogenous world market price module including a stylized Rest of the World (ROW) model. In Russia and Ukraine, there is a strong focus on plant production in general and on grain based animal production; Russia and Ukraine are mostly net-exports of those products. Under the baseline, in Russia prices for crops and oilseeds are below the world... |

This paper examines the changes in nutritional behavior of Russian adults over the ten-year transition period, between 1994 and 2004. We present evidence on the impact of individual as well as regional characteristics on changes in fat, protein, alcohol and cigarette consumption, and on diversity of diet. The results from a dynamic empirical model suggest that among microeconomic determinants, initial levels of consumption, gender, holding a university degree, and having access to a garden plot have a significant impact on the changes in consumption behavior in Russia. Regarding the macroeconomic variables, economic growth has a significant impact on changes in fat and protein consumption and on alcohol use, while unemployment changes significantly... |
