The Cephalocarid, Sandersiella chilenica sp. nov. from Coliumo Bay, Central Chile ( 36º 32' S lat.; 72º56' W long) is described. The new species was collected at only one bottom station (station 4) in a grid of 11 stations sampled monthly during 1982-83, with predominating fractions of fine sand, silt and clay. Four other species of the genus are so far known (Sandersiella acuminata Shiino 1965, and S.kikuchii Shimomura & Akiyama, 2008, from Japan, S. calmani Hessler & Sanders 1973 from off Perú, and S. bathyalis Hessler & Sanders 1973, from Walvis Ridge, and off Namibia, SE Atlantic, and off Santos, Brazil). S. chilenica sp. nov, is differentiated from each of these by its comparatively greater maximal length, its shorter and... |

Clam culture is a shellfish farming activity that has now entered a phase that will determine its future. After the first experimental trials and pilot projects, private investors have set this new aquaculture activity in motion. Today, the progress of clam production is conditioned, in part, on public authorities and financial organisations. On what basis should decisions be made so that appropriate choices are made for the development of clam culture, while respecting other users of coastal areas? This financial and economic study of clam culture seeks to give an overview of current clam farming by analysing operations that have entered the production phase. This approach to productivity of this activity will be done using classical financial analysis... |

(Not controled OCR) Sole is a species whose market has been expanding steadily since the end of the 70's ; landings have doubled, from 4097t in 1979 to 8048t in 1987. In real terms (1980=100) the value of landings has increased from FF124 m to FF265 m over the same period. One must appreciate that the importance of fresh sole lies in its high valuation. Despite the fact that the species occupies no more than 1.66% of total landings in terms of weight, in value terms exceeds 8.5% of the total, making sole the third most valuable species in France. Sole is consumed essentialy fresh and its price to the consumer does not therefore depend on any transformation process. It depends solely on demand and supply (domestic landings plus imports) conditions. The role... |

Recirculation techniques in aquaculture exist and are applied at an industrial scale in sea-bass, sea-bream and turbot rearing for sho rt (incubation, larval rearing, weaning) or long (broodstock) rearing phases whatever the biomass. Experiments are carried out by IFREMER in partnership with producers and equipment makers to develop super intensive fish production in closed system. From the economic viewpoint, recirculation makes it possible to reduce fingerling production cost while it is still unknown in the case of ongrowing. From the insurance viewpoint, recirculation will make risk appraisal and risk m anagement easier. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR] |

The State's main lines of action in the maritime fishing sector are not at all specific. They aim to define, among others, the regulation of relations among the different actors within the sector as well as the technical and administrative methods of management (Wehrin H, 1987). In terms of halieutic resources, the European Community has partially taken the place of state power to set, in particular, rules of management and exploitation of the stocks. The TAC and quotas, keys of resource distribution, and the market policy set up through producer organisations, are indications of this substitution in progress. The recent request coming from the European Community for reducing the fishing effort is witness as well of this transfer in progress (decision of... |

In order to comply with the requirements of the second Multiannual Guidance Plan concerning the fishing fleets in the EEC Member Countries, the French Secretary of State for the sea has implemented a decommissionning scheme in March 1991. To facilitate the withdrawal of an overall engine power representing 100000 kW, subsidies have been attributed to owners scaping their boat of selling it outside the EEC or for a purpose other than fishing. In parallel social measures were set to help the resignation or the retirement of skippers. In March 1992 applications concerning 975 vessels representing about 84 300 kW had been presented. Brittany accounts for 48.5 % of the boats and 43 % of the withdrawn power whereas the mediterranean ports represent only 9 % of... |

Within the framework of the agreement signed between the first party, Confédération de la Coopération de la Mutualité et du Crédit Maritimes, and the second party, IFREMER, and at the request of professionals in the sector, a meeting was held on 19 December at Lorient. The objective of the meeting, gathering together six representatives of professionals from the sector and six members from IFREMER, was to open a discussion on existing or potential modes of regulation available today to the European Community. In the context of the theme of cooperation on bio-economic analyses, this workday followed the publication of the F. GAUTIER (1) draft report and was included in the possibility of a critique of this report and a future discussion around the proposals... |

In September 1989, Mr Pierre Papon, Chairman of the IFREMER, expressed his wish for a study on the issues of research in marine economy. Carried out under the direction of Jacques Weber, this document is the result of this study. Dealing with marine economy equals, mutatis mutandis, dealing with terrestrial economy: the uniqueness of the subject, economy, as that of the marine element, hides a wide heterogeneity and a multiplicity of research questions. This is the reason why eight different fields were chosen to be investigated. It was decided to take an inventory, for each field, of all the specialised research centres, and to interview their directors or some specialists. Interviews were thus carried out by sector. |

This document aims at presenting the way in wich the application of the systems-oriented research to the new sector of fisheries was based on the farming systems research developed in agriculture. It also shows that the characteristics of this fields are an opportunity to realize a methodological progress for the traditional fields of rural development, since the latter is tributary of the environmental dimension. |

This document is written for and at the request of the Central Committee of Maritime Fishing. Yet it is also addressed to regional institutions, several of which would like to equip themselves with an economic monitor. In his "report on the modernisation of the Interprofessional Organisation of Fishing and Marine Farming", the president of the CCPM makes the development of economic information one of the main principles of reform. At the same time, a growing number of regional authorities wish to equip themselves with economic monitors, with the concern of controlling the management and future of their sector of fishing and marine farming. The two problems are similar insomuch as: (i) it is a matter, in both cases, of responding to the same questions: -... |

A new marine benthic Prorocentrum species from sandy habitats of South Brittany (northwestern France), P. consutum sp. nov., is described using LM and SEM and molecular phylogenetic analyses. Cells have a subcircular to broadly ovoid shape and are plainly flattened. They are 57-61 lm long and 52-55 lm wide. A central pyrenoid is present, and the kidney-shaped nucleus is positioned in the posterior region. In right valve view, the periflagellar area is deeply excavated, and the left valve forms a prominent apical ridge. The periflagellar area consists of nine platelets, and a small narrow collar is present around the flagellar pore. The ornamentation of this new species is very peculiar and is characterized by a ring of round areolae located at the... |

Like other large fisheries of small pelagics in the world, the Moroccan fishery of the Central Atlantic can be considered as a "fishery at risk" insofar as a collapse of the stock is a possibility that cannot be completely ruled out. Unfavourable modifications to the natural environment aggravated by a too intensive exploitation of the resources can bring on such a collapse. Up until the beginning of the 80s, the level of exploitation of the sardine stock in the Central Atlantic area remained moderate. This moderation is more a reflection of the profitability constraints that the seine fleet is experiencing than a deliberate choice, except as far as foreign ships are concerned. The opening of the port of Tan Tan since the end of 1981 is likely to make... |

Fish aquafarming is an activity that is starting to take off in Martinique as possible diversification of giant river prawn breeding (Macrobrachium Rosenbergii) which debuted in the middle of the 70s. Two species were involved, one freshwater species (the red tilapia or Saint-Pierre) and a marine species (the redfish or red drum). This mission report presents, in the first section, the local conditions of fish aquafarming development in Martinique the current characteristics of the breeds, the existing production sector and its management. A second section inventories the main operating constraints of this field technical or market constraints. |

King scallop culture is a shellfish farming activity that has now reached a turning point that will determine its future. After many experimental trials, public funds are to be relayed by private funds. This transition requires a technical and economic analysis of king scallop culture. This study is a global approach to production costs through a project that involves all the players in king scallop culture. After presenting the basics of king scallop farming, we will detail the project and its forecasted ten-year budget. The financial analysis, as well as the subsequent sensitivity analysis, will help better determine the profitability of this activity and its feasibility. In our conclusion, although the study was limited in scope, we attempt to extend... |

At the end of the Second World War, a process of modifications to the production framework of the small fishing business sector began. This reorganising of the sector was oriented towards capital deepening, thus bringing on a change of the weight of various production factors. In fact, while the number of ships and sailors was decreasing, the power, size and gear of the small boats were increasing. The landed amounts lagged, even if a qualitative change in intake appeared, which brought, along with rising demand, an increase in current francs of the landings' value (MEURIOT, 1987). This technical evolution of the ships was largely helped by the effect of successive changes in the financing of production units and the effect of the positive changes of the... |

The evolution of technology and labor costs in maritime countries results, throughout the international competition, in a transfer of shipping from developed countries to some newly industrialized countries, although the protectionism and the international cooperation can modify, liule or more, this tranfer. [0 make the maximum profit from shipping industry for the national economy, a new maritime policy is supposed to be worked out in line with such an evolution, so as to decide when and how the government should be involved. That policy ought to have three stages concerning successively the preparation, the development and the retreat of shipping industry. A merchant fleet is often considered to be a constitutive element of national sovereignty.... |
