The effects of NaCl salinity on seed germination, growth, physiology, and biochemistry of two bambara groundnut landraces (Vigna subterranea (L.) Verdc), Kakamega (white seed coat) and Mumias (red seed coat), were investigated with the aim of establishing traits, which can provide a basis for breeding to salt tolerance in groundnuts. A study was conducted under laboratorial and greenhouse conditions. Bambara groundnut seeds and plants were subjected to five concentrations of NaCl solutions with several electrical conductivities: 0 (control), 6.96, 12.93, 19.89, and 25.86 dS m-1. Germination percentage, growth, chlorophyll fluorescence, and leaf chlorophyll content were determined. Sodium chloride salinity (p<0.05) significantly decreased germination and... |

Abstract The cassava has been modified successfully by using the saline water, which was abundantly available on the planet. The biomass was submerged in saline waters that salt concentrations were altered at 0, 3.5 percent (seawater) and 10 percent (w/w) and were kept 5 days. After recovery by washing steps, the treated solids were characterized by using XRD (X-ray diffraction ), FTIR (Fourier transform infra-red), and SEM (Scanning electron microscopic). The results showed that the XRD pattern of saline water pretreatment decreased significantly. The biggest decrease of X-ray intensity occurred at around 18o. Meanwhile, the fingerprint of FTIR revealed the transmittance intensity of infra-red ray of saline water treated solid inclined for all wave... |

PIRATA (Brazil, France, USA) has deployed between 1997 and 2001, an array of 12 ATLAS buoys with the objective of monitoring, describing and understanding the evolution of sea surface temperature, upper ocean thermal and saline structure, net heat budget, air-sea fluxes of momentum, latent and sensible heat and fresh water in the tropical Atlantic. The oceanic and meteorological observations are transmitted to shore via satellite and are available in near real-time on the Internet. They are communicated to the Global Telecommunication System and readily available for ocean and weather prediction models. The ultimate objective of PIRATA is real-time ocean monitoring to enable resource prediction in the adjacent countries. |

ABSTRACT The split-root technique was used as a strategy to reduce saline stress on pepper. A completely randomized design with six treatments and four replicates was used. The treatments consisted of six saline water application strategies (T1 - salinized nutrient solution (S1 = 1.4 dS m-1) during the whole cycle; T2 - salinized nutrient solution (S2 = 4.5 dS m-1) throughout the cycle, T3 - S1 and S2 throughout the cycle, using two emitters and without splitting the root system, T4 - S1 and S2, using two emitters and splitting the root system by a plastic film, T5 - S1 and S2, using two emitters and splitting the root system, alternating the solutions every 15 days, T6 - S1 and S2, using two emitters and without splitting the root system, alternating the... |

ABSTRACT This research was conducted in order to evaluate the growth and production of colored-fiber cotton, cv. ‘BRS Rubi’, irrigated with water of different salinities and nitrogen (N) doses. The experiment was carried out in drainage lysimeters filled with soil material from an eutrophic Regolithic Neosol with sandy-loam texture under greenhouse conditions in Campina Grande, PB. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design and the treatments consisted of five levels of irrigation water salinity with the following electrical conductivities - ECw (5.1, 6.1, 7.1, 8.1 and 9.1 dS m-1), combined with five N doses - ND (65; 100; 135; 170; 205 mg of N kg-1 of soil), distributed in a 5 x 5 factorial scheme with three replicates. The growth of the... |

ABSTRACT The study of cultivars with moderate flood tolerance is essential to their use in pastures irrigated with saline water. The aim of this study was to evaluate the chemical composition of Panicum maximum ‘BRS Zuri’ under the effect of different irrigation depths and levels of salinity. A randomised block design of split plots was used with five replications per treatment. The treatments resulted from the combination of three levels of water salinity (S1 = 0.6, S2 = 1.8 and S3 = 3.0 dS m-1) and four levels of irrigation (I1 = 60%, I2 = 80%, I3 = 100% and I4 = 120% of the evapotranspiration). The chemical composition of the grass, Panicum maximum ‘BRS Zuri’, cut at 28 days, was evaluated over two cycles. There was an interaction between the factors... |
