This work reports the results of sandfly collections in several places, during 2001 and 2002, in Bom Sucesso, Jardim Alegre, Kaloré, Londrina and Sabáudia municipalities, North of the State. The sandflies catches were performed with Shannon and Falcão traps in domiciliary areas, domestic animal shelters, barns and in the forest. A total of 4,019 specimens of 8 species were captured. Nyssomyia whitmani predominates in all of the municipalities. The species Migonemyia migonei, Nyssomyia neivai and N. whitmani may be involved in the epidemiology of American Tegumentary Leishmaniasis in this state.

Polymorphism, inter-population and inter-specific variation in Nyssomyia intermedia (Lutz & Neiva) and Nyssomyia neivai (Pinto) (Diptera, Psychodidae, Phlebotominae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Andrade Filho,José Dilermando; Galati,Eunice A. Bianchi; Falcão,Alda Lima.
Nyssomyia intermedia (Lutz & Neiva) and Nyssomyia neivai (Pinto) are morphologically very close and both present great variation in some structures. The objective of this study is a description of the variation among the females of these species in populations from the States of Minas Gerais and São Paulo. The morphological structures studied were the number of horizontal teeth in the cibarium and the number of rings and the shape of the terminal knob of the spermathecae. The spermatheca rings are significantly more numerous in N. intermedia than in N. neivai and the simple shape of the terminal knob predominated in both species. Regarding the cibarium, eight to eleven teeth have been found in both species, with up to twelve teeth in the latter....

Flebotomíneos (Diptera, Psychodidae) na Amazônia: II. Listagem das espécies coletadas na bacia petrolífera no Rio Urucu, Amazonas, Brasil, utilizando diferentes armadilhas e iscas Zoologia
Castellón,Eloy G.; Fé,Nelson F.; Buhrnheim,Paulo F.; Fé,Flavio A..
A sandfly survey was carried out in 100 x 150 m patches of primary forest submitted to recent deforestation in order to determine its species composition 10-30 days after clearing. The following collecting methods were used: CDC traps whit black light; Malaise traps placed at 0.5, 1, 5 and 10m up from the the soil surface; Pennsylvania traps whit black light; Malaise traps, tree-base catches and human baits. A total of 2810 specimens of Lutzomyia França, 1924 and one species of Brumptomyia França & Parrot, 1921, were collected. In general, the predominant species were L. chagasi (Costa Lima, 1941) (25.9%), L. davisi (Root, 1934) (12.3%), L. ayrozai (Barretto & Coutinho, 1940) (9.32%) and L. ubiquitalis (Mangabeira, 1942), (6.93%).
After examing the material identified as Lutzomyia (Psychodopygus) arthuri (Fonseca) and Lutzomyia (Psychodopygus) lloydi (Antunes) of the sandfly collection at the Centro de Pesquisas René Rachou, we observed that L. arthuri is found in the State of São Paulo (counties of Ferraz de Vasconcelos, Mogi das Cruzes, Osasco, Poá, Santo Amaro and São Paulo). L. lloydi has a greater distribution including the State of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Minas Gerais. Both species are simpatric in the counties of São Paulo and Osasco in the state of São Paulo.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate Leishmania vectors and investigate the environmental and climatic characteristics related to their transmission. This was a prospective eco-epidemiological study involving the systematic collection of sandflies and a canine serological survey in areas of municipality in Brazil. Blood samples from 1,752 dogs were examined to test for canine visceral leishmaniasis (VL). An entomological evaluation was carried out using 24 light traps in the peridomicile and intradomicile areas of 12 households for 12 months. Climate variables were analyzed using a simple Spearman correlation and a spatial analysis via the fuzzy logic method and K function. The prevalence rate of canine VL was 4.1% and 7.1% in the two areas that...

Investigation of natural infection by Leishmania in sandflies of Paraná State, Southern Brazil BABT
Scodro,Regiane Bertin de Lima; Reinhold-Castro,Kárin Rosi; Dias-Sversutti,Alessandra de Cassia; Neitzke-Abreu,Herintha Coeto; Membrive,Norberto de Assis; Kühl,João Balduíno; Silveira,Thaís Gomes Verzignassi; Teodoro,Ueslei.
The purpose of this work was to verify the occurrence of Leishmania in naturally infected sandflies. The insects were collected with Falcão, Shannon and HP light-traps, in Doutor Camargo and Maringá municipalities between November 2004 and October 2005. Of the 11,033 sandflies collected in Doutor Camargo, 2,133 surviving females were dissected, particularly those of the Nyssomyia neivai species (86.87%). In Maringá, 136 sandflies were collected, of which 79 N. whitmani females and 1 Migonemyia migonei female were dissected. The dissected insects were identified and stored in the pools of 10 specimens. The PCR was carried out on 1,190 females of N. neivai and 190 of N. whitmani from Doutor Camargo, and on 30 of N. whitmani from Maringá, using the primers...

Environmental sanitation and peri-domiciliar organisation as auxiliary practices for the control of phlebotomines in Paraná state, southern Brazil BABT
Teodoro,Ueslei; Balduíno,João; Thomaz-Soccol,Vanete; Barbosa,Orlando C; Ferreira,Maria E. M. C; Lozovei,Ana Leuch; Verzignassi,Thaís G; Roberto,Andrea C. B. Silva.
Studies were conducted to compare the results of the collections of phlebotomines, in two distinct periods, i.e. before and after changed environmental conditions in Jussara county, Paraná State, Brazil. Collections were made near to a forest in Jussara farm, between February and April 1992. Six Falcão light traps were installed in houses and animals' shelters. Catches were made once a month and 35,783 phlebotomines were captured. Based on these data, sanitation was done in peridomiciliary area and domestic animals shelters were separated from domiciles in January 1994. Then during February to April 1994 using the same methodology new phlebotomines catches were made. The results showed that an average of just 150 (6,311/42) phlebotomines per hour were...
