Characterizing and Comparing the Spawning Habitats of Sardine (Sardinops sagax) and Anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) in the Northern Benguela Region OceanDocs
Tjizoo,Mbeurora Beau.
Spawning habitats of sardine and anchovy in eastern boundary current systems are characterized in an attempt to understand the fluctuations observed in their abundance. The northern Benguela, as an eastern boundary current system, is characterized by turbulent conditions that seem to govern the variability observed in the abundance of these species. Sardine and anchovy have developed mechanisms that enable them to maximize productivity. In the northern Benguela, spawning intensity is historically known to be high in periods and vicinities where turbulence is reduced. However, it is believed that selection of conditions for spawning by these species may change withfluctuations in abundance of fish.

Revisión taxonómica y análisis de los caracteres morfométricos y merísticos de la sardina fueguina (Sprattus fuegensis)Jenyns, 1842 (Pisces, Clupeidae) OceanDocs
Cousseau, M.B..
This paper is based on the study of 484 specimens collected off three different districts of Santa Cruz (Caleta Olivia, Puerto Deseado and Río Gallegos)and the northern coastal region of Malvinas Islands. The following items have been developed: -a brief description of the clupeoids present in the southern patagonic area where the sardine lives, and a key to their identification; -the updated systematic position of the species and its bibliographical references; -a description of the external morphology; -a statistical analysis of morphometric and meristic character; and geographic distribution and movements. It is possible to presume the existence of two geographically separated groups, one in the coasts off Santa Cruz Province and another around Malvinas...

Towards the development of environmental indices for the Namibian shelf, with particular reference to fisheries management. OceanDocs
Bartholomae, Ch.; Van der Plas, A..
The Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources has the task of collecting and providing relevant oceanographic information for management of their fisheries. However, quality information is difficult to provide because of the complexity of the processes involved in the Namibian marine ecosystem. Nonetheless, there are oceanographic data available that can contribute to fisheries management by improving the general understanding of important oceanographic processes related to fisheries. The focus of this paper is on the development of simple environmental indices that can serve as a measurement or proxy of the state or intensity of certain important oceanographic processes or variables for temporal comparison. These indices relate to oceanographic...

Some Aspects of the Reproductive Biology of Kapenta, Limnothrissa miodon (Boulenger 1906) in the Cahora Bassa Reservoir, Mozambique OceanDocs
Mafuca, J..
The reproductive biology of the Kapenta (Limnothrissa miodon), that supports the main commercial fishery in Lake Cahora Bassa (Mozambique) was investigated using monthly samples collected during 2003 and2004. This species was initially introduced in Lake Kariba in 1967/68 with the objective of filling up the pelagic environment that was created with dam closure. The fish is believed to have been able to negotiate the Kariba dam wall and became established in Cahora Bassa, some 250 km downstream, as well. The reproductive biology of Kapenta is known from Lake Tanganyika, where it is indigenous, and from Kariba, but no research has been performed, so far, in Cahora Bassa. Since many important biological attributes may vary from place to place, depending on...

A Comparison Of Condition Factor And Gonadosomatic Index Of Sardine Sardinops Sagax Stocks In The Northern And Southern Benguela Upwelling Ecosystems, 1984–1999 OceanDocs
Van der Lingen, C.D.; Kreiner, A.; Fréon, P..
Time-series of condition factor (CF) and gonadosomatic index (GSI) were generated using general linear models (GLM) for sardine Sardinops sagax stocks in the northern and southern Benguela ecosystems over the period 1984–1999. During this period the biomass of sardine in the northern Benguela remained at relatively low levels of <500 000 tons, whereas that of southern Benguela sardine increased 40-fold to 1.3 million tons. The GLMs explained 27 and 45% of the observed variation in CF, and 32 and 28% of the observed variation in GSI, for sardine in the northern and southern Benguela subsystems respectively. Whereas the sardine CF in the northern Benguela remained stable over time, that for the southern Benguela stock declined steadily during the study...

Note de conjoncture OceanDocs

Cousseau, M.B.; Gru, D.L..
Samples of Sardina fueguina (Sprattus fuegensis)were taken during research cruises carried out in 1974 and 1978. Length and age frequency distributions were analyzed, and von Bertalanffy growth parameters were calculated for the coastal waters of two geographical regions: Province of Santa Cruz and northern part of Malvinas Islands. Lenght and weight growth curves have been calculated for each region and each year. Marked differences have been found between gowth parameters of both regions, and the calculated values showed a good fit with the observed ones. According to these results, it is possible to assume that the sardines of both regions constitute two different populations. However, more information on the total distribution of the species will have...

Use of environmental parameters to explain the variability in spawnerrecruitment OceanDocs
Kirchner, C. H.; Bartholomae, C. H.; Kreiner, A..
This study attempts to explain the variability in recruitment of sardine in the northern Benguela and to develop potential models by including environmental information to predict recruitment. Two different recruitment and spawner number datasets were available: a VPA-developed dataset, for the period 1952–1987, and data from a simple age-structured model for 1992–2007. In all, four environmental indices were used: the degree of the intrusion of the warm Angola Current into northern Namibia, termed the Angola–Benguela front index; the extent of the upwelling area off central Namibia; average sea surface temperature (SST) over the northern and central Namibian shelf; and wind stress anomalies at Lüderitz as an indicator of upwelling strength. Contrary to...
