Population dynamics and predatory impact of the alien jellyfish Aurelia solida (Cnidaria, Scyphozoa) in the Bizerte Lagoon (southwestern Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Gueroun, Sonai M; Molinero, Juan-carlos; Piraino, Stefano; Dali Yahia, Mohamed Nejib.
Understanding the life cycle strategies and predatory impact of alien jellyfish species is critical to mitigate the impact that these organisms may have on local populations, biodiversity, and ultimately on the functioning of food webs. In the Mediterranean Sea, little is known about the dynamics of alien jellyfish, despite this biodiversity hotspot being one of the most threatened areas by increasing numbers of alien jellyfish. Here, we investigated the population dynamics and predatory impact of a non-indigenous scyphomedusa, Aurelia solida Browne 1905, in the Bizerte Lagoon, Tunisia. The study was based on bimonthly surveys performed over two consecutive years, from November 2012 to August 2014. Field observations showed that the planktonic phase of A....

The Scyphomedusae of the Mediterranean coast of Israel, including two Lessepsian migrants new to the Mediterranean Naturalis
Galil, B.S.; Spanier, E.; Ferguson, W.W..
Seven species of Scyphomedusae are reported from the Mediterranean coast of Israel. Two of these, Rhopilema nomadica spec. nov. and Phyllorhiza punctata von Lendenfeld, 1884, are Lessepsian migrants new to the Mediterranean.

Feeding behaviour of Caribbean Scyphomedusae: Cassiopea frondosa (Pallas) and Cassiopea xamachana Bigelow Naturalis
Larson, R.J..
LARSON, R.J., 1997. Feeding behaviour of Caribbean Scyphomedusae: Cassiopea frondosa (Pallas) and Cassiopea xamachana (Bigelow). Studies Nat. Hist. Caribbean Region 73, Amsterdam 1997: 43-54. Cassiopea frondosa and C. xamachana are carnivorous. Prey are filtered from the water by the pumping activity of the umbrella. Prey, predominantly small epibenthic crustaceans (0.2- 10 mm in length) are caught mostly by interception. However, some prey may impact on the oral surface through turbulence or by their own locomotion. Prey capture was essentially the same for both species, except that the vesicles take an active part in prey capture only in C. frondosa. Ingestion occurred after the digitate-fringed lips of the funnel-shaped oral ostia opened. The digitata...

Rediscovery of Sanderia malayensis and remarks on Rhopilema nomadica record in Pakistan (Cnidaria: Scyphozoa) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Morandini,André C.; Gul,Shahnawaz.
ABSTRACT In this report, we record the rediscovery of Sanderia malayensis in Pakistani waters since the John Murray Expedition (1933-34) who collected two small specimens off-Karachi, Pakistan. The specimens were described and we discuss the shape of gastric pouches contour. We also comment upon the newly recorded Rhopilema nomadica jellyfish from the region, and assume it to be previously recorded as Rhopilema hispidum.

A survey of the Scyphozoa and Cubozoa (Cnidaria, Medusozoa) from the Ceará coast (NE Brazil) Biota Neotropica
Morandini,André Carrara; Soares,Marcelo de Oliveira; Matthews-Cascon,Helena; Marques,Antonio Carlos.
Most of the scyphozoans and cubozoans recorded for the Brazilian coast are presumed to be distributed over the entire coastline, but little information on precise records is available. This paper presents the first published records for the Ceará state (northeastern region) of the cubozoan Chiropsalmus quadrumanus, and the scyphozoans Chrysaora lactea, Linuche unguiculata (polyp), Lychnorhiza lucerna, Nausithoe sp. (polyp), Phyllorhiza punctata, and Stomolophus meleagris. The medusoid species have been known by local fishermen and non-specialists for a long time in the area.
