Distribution, morphology and triggers of submarine mass wasting in the Sea of Marmara ArchiMer
Zitter, T. A. C.; Grall, Celine; Henry, Pierre; Ozeren, M.s.; Cagatay, M. Namik; Sengor, A.m.c.; Gasperini, Luca; Mercier De Lepinay, Marion; Geli, L.
An overview is given of mass wasting features along the slopes of the Sea of Marmara, Turkey, based on new data and previously published information. The Sea of Marmara is characterized by active tectonics along the North Anatolian Fault and by eustatic sea level changes controlling the connections both to the Mediterranean and Black Sea (i.e. lacustrine and marine conditions during sea-level low and high stands, respectively). High resolution bathymetric data, subsurface echo-sounder and seismic reflection profiling, seafloor visual observations, as well as stratigraphic analysis of sediment cores have been used to identify, map and date submarine slope failures and mass wasting deposits. Gravity mass movements are widespread on the steep slopes of the...

Radiocarbon geochronology of the sediments of the São Paulo Bight (southern Brazilian upper margin) Anais da ABC (AABC)
Mahiques,Michel M.; Sousa,Silvia H.M.; Burone,Leticia; Nagai,Renata H.; Silveira,Ilson C.A.; Figueira,Rubens C.L.; Soutelino,Rafael G.; Ponsoni,Leandro; Klein,Daniel A..
The aim of this work was to generate an inventory of the data on radiocarbon datings obtained from sediments of the São Paulo Bight (southern Brazilian upper margin) and to analyze the data in terms of Late Quaternary sedimentary processes and sedimentation rates. A total of 238 radiocarbon datings from materials collected using differents ampling procedures was considered for this work. The sedimentation rates varied from less than 2 to 68 cm.kyr-1. The highest sedimentation rate values were found in a low-energy (ría type) coastal system as well as in the upwelling zones of Santa Catarina and Cabo Frio. The lowest rates were found on the outer shelf and upper slopes. Our results confirm the strong dependency of the shelf currents, with an emphasis to the...

Model of wetland development of the Amapá coast during the late Holocene Anais da ABC (AABC)
Guimarães,José T.F.; Cohen,Marcelo C.L.; França,Marlon C.; Lara,Rúben J.; Behling,Hermann.
The modern vegetation types, sedimentary sequences, pollen records and radiocarbon dating obtained from three sediment cores from Calçoene Coastal Plain were used to provide a palaeoecological history during the late Holocene of Amapá coastal wetland according to flood regime, sea-level and climatic changes. Based on these records, four phases of vegetation development are presented and they probably reflect the interaction between the flow energy to the sediment accumulation and the brackish/freshwater influence in the vegetation. This work suggests interchanges among time periods characterized by marine and fluvial influence. The longitudinal profile did not reveal the occurrence of mangrove in the sediment deposited around 2100 yr B.P. During the second...
