Seasonal variation of sperm quality in Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) ArchiMer
Suquet, Marc; Malo, Florent; Queau, Isabelle; Ratiskol, Dominique; Quere, Claudie; Le Grand, Jacqueline; Fauvel, Christian.
Seasonal changes of sperm quality which can affect sperm biological parameters throughout the breeding period, have been little studied in mollusc species. Controlling gamete quality would aid the management of gametes in hatcheries and the development of selection programs. The aim of the present study was to describe the changes in sperm quality of wild Pacific oysters through the spawning season by comparing sperm parameters at the beginning (May), middle (July) and end (October) of this period using a panel of bio-descriptors. These parameters were studied over the 2014 breeding season based on shed sperm collected after serotonin injection of wild breeders. A significantly higher percentage of motile sperm was observed at the end of the spawning...

A preliminary study of the behaviour and vitality of reseeded juvenile great scallops, of three sizes in three seasons ArchiMer
Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Mingant, Christian; Castillo, A.
In order to have a better understanding of recessing in great scallop, Pecten maximus and consequently the causes of mortality at reseeding, this study has monitored, at different seasons, the dispersion and recessing of different sizes of juveniles (about 15, 30 and 45 mm, called small, medium and large) after seeding. Moreover, the aim was to see when small spat (15 mm) could be seeded, and thus reduce the costs of intermediate culture. Three monitoring approaches were used together: (1) continual observations by remote video camera, of a defined area (less than 1 m2) containing 10 scallops from each size group; (2) daily monitoring of behaviour with divers along three bottom lines, with 20 × 1 m2 plots each and nine marked scallops per plot; and (3) the...

Spatio-temporal variability in benthic silica cycling in two macrotidal estuaries: Causes and consequences for local to global studies ArchiMer
Raimonet, Melanie; Ragueneau, Olivier; Andrieux Loyer, Francoise; Philippon, Xavier; Kerouel, Roger; Le Goff, Manon; Memery, Laurent.
The high heterogeneity of silica cycling in coastal margins and the lack of silica data (compared to nitrogen and phosphorus) prevent the estimation of global silica retention in estuaries. In this study, the spatial and temporal variability of porewater silicic acid (Si(OH)4) profiles e that integrate benthic transport and reaction processes e was investigated at different spatial (metre, longitudinal and crosssection, intra-estuary) and temporal (tidal, seasonal) scales in two macrotidal estuaries, very close geographically but essentially differing in their shape. Studying the spatial and temporal variability of Si(OH)4 concentrations in porewaters provided evidence for the importance of transport processes, e.g. bio-irrigation, tidal pumping,...

Survivability of discarded Norway lobster in the bottom trawl fishery of the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Merillet, Laurene; Mehault, Sonia; Rimaud, Thomas; Piton, Corentine; Morandeau, Fabien; Morfin, Marie; Kopp, Dorothee.
In the context of the landing obligation set by the new Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), Norway lobster Nephrops norvegicus was identified as a species likely to have high survival rate when discarded in the bottom trawl fishery of the Bay of Biscay. Previous studies in this area reported a survival rate between 30% and 51%, but the experiments were done on a limited monitoring period and the seasonal variations were not investigated. This study was designed to obtain a reliable value for survival rate after a 14-day monitoring period in onshore tanks allowing considering delayed mortality. The study also tested the effect on the survival rate of using a discarding chute system, a sorting device that was made mandatory on the 1st of January 2017 for Nephrops...

Seasonal Variations in the Morphometric Characteristics of the Pubertal West African Dwarf Buck in its Native Tropical Environment International Journal of Morphology
Bitto,Immanuel I; Egbunike,Gabriel N.
The effects of season on the morphometric characteristics of the reproductive organs of the pubertal West African Dwarf buck in its native humid tropical environment were investigated. All morphometric characteristics as well as the derivations from both testicular and epididymal morphometry were unaffected by season (p<0.05). There were however, highly significant correlations (p<0.05, p<0.01, p<0.001) between body weight and testicular as well as epididymal morphometry. The results also showed that both testicular and epididymal morphometric characteristics in the pubertal buck are highly predictable from body weight and as such lend ground for the early selection of good sires from records of their growth rate. The non effect of season on...

Impact of agro-farming activities on microbial diversity of acidic red soils in a Camellia Oleifera Forest Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Li,Jun; Wu,Zelong; Yuan,Jun.
ABSTRACT The production of Camellia oleifera (oil tea), typically planted in acidic red soils in southern China, is limited by low soil fertility. Agro-farming is one way to promote soil fertility by increasing organic matter and microbial communities. To understand the impact of agro-farming activity on soil fertility, three types of agro-farming, namely, raising laying hens under forest (RLH), cultivating Lolium perenne grass under forest (LPG), and maintenance of native grass (MNG), were employed in an oil tea farm with acidic red soil in Changsha, China. Soil samples were collected from the farm to estimate microbial communities, pH, and total organic carbon (TOC) in different seasons. The results indicated that TOC and temperature were the dominant...
