The earthworm fauna of regenerating forests and anthropogenic habitats in the coastal region of Paraná PAB
Römbke,Jörg; Schmidt,Petra; Höfer,Hubert.
The aim of this study was to evaluate abundance, biomass and diversity of earthworms in the southern coast region of the Mata Atlântica biodiversity hotspot. A total of 51 study sites in pastures, banana monocultures, mixed agroforestry systems, secondary forests in succession and old-growth forests near the coast of Paraná, Brazil, were evaluated. Each site was sampled once. Species richness of the earthworms was generally low and varied little between sites. At all sites except for one, the peregrine species Pontoscolex corethrurus (Glossoscolecidae) strongly dominated. Three other peregrine species, Amynthas corticis, Amynthas gracilis (Megascolecidae) and Ocnerodrilus occidentalis (Ocnerodrilidae), were frequent in moist sites. No autochthonous species...

Reproductive biology of Protium spruceanum (Burseraceae), a dominant dioecious tree in vegetation corridors in Southeastern Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Vieira,Fábio de Almeida; Appolinário,Vivette; Fajardo,Cristiane Gouvêa; Carvalho,Dulcinéia de.
We investigated the reproductive biology of Protium spruceanum (Benth.) Engler in vegetation corridors of secondary Atlantic forest in Lavras, southern Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The reproductive phenology was investigated fortnightly over a one year period. Floral biology studies involved pollen viability analysis, nectar production, stigmatic receptivity, pollen tube growth, visiting insect species and visit rates. The small, pale yellowish flowers (0.3-0.4 cm diameter) are functionally unisexual and organized in dense inflorescences (ca. 45 flowers). P. spruceanum presented annual flowering between September and November. Staminate flowers supplied a high percentage of viable pollen (90.6%) and relatively abundant nectar (x = 4.5 μL). Pistillate...

Land Use and Changes in Soil Morphology and Physical-Chemical Properties in Southern Amazon Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Melo,Vander Freitas; Orrutéa,Alessandro Góis; Motta,Antônio Carlos Vargas; Testoni,Samara Alves.
ABSTRACT Many Amazonian farmers use the slash-and-burn method rather than fertilization for crop production. The aim of the present study was to evaluate changes in the morphological, physical, and chemical properties of naturally fertile Inceptisols after conversion from native forest to different uses in southern Amazonia, Brazil. Land covered by dense native forest (NF) was split into four areas of 1.0 ha each. Three areas were slashed and burned and then cultivated for 11 years with coffee (CO), secondary forest (SF), and pasture (PA). Four soil profiles were sampled in each treatment (four uses × four replicates). The mean value distribution of each physical and chemical analysis was determined for different depths, and standard error bars were placed...

Estimation of sediment production in oil palm expansion areas in the Amazon AGRIAMBI
Silva,Antonio K. L.; Sousa,Adriano M. L. de; Santos,Joyse T. S. dos; Villela,João M.; Martorano,Lucieta G.; Crestana,Silvio.
ABSTRACT Currently, an activity that has become strategic at a national level is the cultivation of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) in the northeast region of the Pará State, in eastern Brazilian Amazon. However, the impacts of this crop expansion on the hydro-sedimentological cycle are still unknown. Therefore, this study estimated the impacts of oil palm crop expansion on sediment production in a sub-basin under consolidated use of this crop. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model was applied in the Mariquita sub-basin, calibrated by the flow regionalization technique, using data measured in the field with a current meter. Simulation results indicated an increase in sediment production between the years 2008 and 2013, which can be attributed to the...

The relationship between stem vessel parameters and the development of strata in the early stages of secondary forest succession in Amazonia Acta Amazonica
TSUCHIYA,Akio; HIRABUKI,Yoshihiko; NISHIZAWA,Toshie; LISBOA,Pedro Braga; SILVA,Carlos Rosário da.
In order to compare the development of strata in the early stages of secondary forest succession with vessel parameters of the tree species, a forest inventory was carried out in 4-year (Q1: 48 m2), 11-year (Q2: 400 m2) and 20-year (Q3: 400 m2) forests and vessel parameters were investigated from stem cross sections of 18 species obtained in Q2. Thirty three species (21 families), 77 species (35 families), 39 species (20 families) were found in Ql, Q2, Q3, respectively. The percentage of dead individuals, dead stems and the percentage of individuals with multiple stems increased with time after clear cutting. Also, the total D2H of Q3 was 26.1 times that of Q1, and the development of strata started in Q2 and Q3. The image analysis of vessel size, area and...

Mortality and diameter growth of lianas in a semideciduous forest fragment in Southeastern Brazil Acta Botanica
Lombardi,Julio Antonio; Temponi,Lívia Godinho; Leite,Claudia Aparecida.
This is a 30-month study of mortality rates and diameter growth rates of lianas in a semideciduous forest fragment in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Results are presented for 484 specimens of lianas, of which 103 experienced individual mortality (21.3% of the sampled population). Mortality varied according to class of stem diameter, but did not vary throughout the months of year, or between seasons or years. Mortality rates were higher than those recorded in other studies, perhaps due to the age of this secondary forest. Stem diameter growth rates were measured for 385 lianas, the survivors after 30 months plus four plants that died just before the final census, and averaged 1.2mm/year, ranging from 0mm/year (Chioccoca alba) to 4.8mm/year...

Litterfall, precipitation and nutrient fluxes in a secondary lowland rain forest in Ile-Ife, Nigeria Acta Botanica
Oziegbe,Modupe B.; Muoghalu,Joseph I.; Oke,Samson O..
Litterfall, precipitation and nutrient fluxes were investigated in a 0.25 ha plot of a secondary lowland rain forest in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, for a period of one year. The study determined the magnitude of nutrient fluxes through (litterfall, incident rainfall, throughfall and stemflow) and evaluated the relative importance of these components as pathways of nutrient transport to the soil of this forest. There was a significant monthly variation in litterfall and the highest values of the standing crop of litter occurred from November to March. The concentration of elements in both throughfall and stemflow were higher than those of incidence rainfall. Greater quantities of calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper and nitrogen were deposited annually from the...

Bryophyte communities across the ecological succession process in the Caxiuanã National Forest, Pará, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
TAKASHIMA-OLIVEIRA,TÁSSIA T.G.; MEDEIROS,PRISCILA S. DE; TAVARES-MARTINS,ANA CLÁUDIA C..
Abstract Bryophytes play an important role in the process of ecological succession: conditioning the environment favourably for the emergence of subsequent groups. The objective of this study was to investigate the distribution of bryophyte communities in a cronossequence in the Caxiuanã National Forest, Pará, Brazil. To this end, biological material was collected in forest remnants with different successional stages based on regeneration age: Stage I (0 – 10 years), Stage II (10 - 25), Stage III (> 25) and Stage IV (primary forests). Density, richness and composition of species were compared between successional stages and the occurrence of possible indicator-species was investigated. The identified taxa were also classified by guilds of tolerance to...

Reproductive phenology of Miconia mirabilis (Melastomataceae) within three distinct physiognomies of Atlantic Forest, Bahia, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Pessoa,Michaele de Souza; Vleeschouwer,Kristel Myriam De; Talora,Daniela Custódio; Rocha,Larissa; Amorim,André Márcio Araújo.
Although Miconia mirabilis is a very common species in disturbed forest areas and is known for providing food resources for the local fauna, little is known about its reproductive phenology and other ecological aspects. The present study compares intra- and inter-annual patterns in the reproductive phenophases of that species in three distinct physiognomies of Atlantic Forest in Southeastern Bahia based on semi-quantitative observations conducted over a period of three years. We searched for possiblerelationships with climatic variables, differences among sites and synchrony. Both the flowering and fruiting strategies of M. mirabilis were classified as annual extended in all three study sites. We found no significant differences among years. Despite low...

Vegetation and pollen rain relationship from the tropical Atlantic rain forest in Southern Brazil BABT
Behling,Hermann; Negrelle,Raquel R. B..
The relationship between the southern Brazilian tropical Atlantic lowland rain forest and modern pollen rain was studied by pollen traps. The study was carried out on a one hectare plot undisturbed rain forest of the reserve Volta Velha and two secondary forests, ± 50 and 7 years old. About 248 identified tree, shrub and herb species (excluding epiphytes) of 50 families were represented by 126 different pollen and spore types (including non-local taxa). The calculated average influx of pollen rain from the native Atlantic rain forest was 12465 pollen grains per cm² and year. The influx from the ± 50 years old and from the 7 years old secondary forest was relatively low (4112 and 3667 grains per cm² and year, respectively) compared to the undisturbed rain...
