APPLICABILITY OF FINGERPRINTING FOR IDENTIFICATION OF SEDIMENT SOURCES IN A MESOSCALE SEMIARID CATCHMENT REA
Silva,Eveline M. R. da; Medeiros,Pedro; Araújo,José C. de.
ABSTRACT The study aimed at identifying sediment sources in a mesoscale catchment (933 km2) located in the Brazilian semiarid region. The research explored the potential of using a fingerprinting technique to verify the origin of eroded sediments in a catchment by comparing physical and mineralogical properties of potential sediment sources and sediments deposited in a pond (6 × 103 m3 storage capacity) and a reservoir (20 × 106 m3 storage capacity). The goal was to assess the feasibility of using such material to identify sediment sources in a semiarid environment with a high density of surface reservoirs. Chemical variables were studied by mineralogical analysis using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and multivariate statistics. The results showed that...

Sediment transport in the Bay of Marseille : Role of extrem events. ArchiMer
Verney, Romaric; Jany, Cassandre; Thouvenin, Benedicte; Pairaud, Ivane; Vousdoukas, Michalis I.; Pinazo, Christel; Ardhuin, Fabrice; Cann, Philippe.
Human pressures on ecosystems have increased significantly over the last decades, and especially Mediterranean coasts are strongly impacted by the development of big cities and industrialized area, such as the Bay of Marseille. Prior to any investigations on ecological or contamination impacts, it was necessary to understand sediment dynamics and its response to natural extreme events such as storm or heavy rainfall events. In situ observations were dedicated to understand the behavior of bed sediments, and their spatial distribution. A benthic station was deployed for three months to observe the impact of extreme events on hydrodynamics and sediment dynamics in a critical zone of the study area. These measurementswere used to calibrate and validate the...

Experimental study of the near-field impact of an oyster table on the flow ArchiMer
Kervella, Youen; Germain, Gregory; Gaurier, Benoit; Facq, Jean-valery; Cayocca, Florence; Lesueur, Patrick.
Oyster farming structures are artificial obstacles which disturb tidal flow and wave propagation. These effects can induce modifications of erosion and sedimentation patterns, turbidity changes, local silting up and can be threatening for the shellfish farming itself. The understanding of the impact of these structures in terms of hydrodynamics and sediment dynamics in the far-field, i.e. at the scale of a bay, is a very challenging task. In order to investigate the far-field impact, it is very important to understand in the first place all the changes which occur at a smaller scale, i.e. at the scale of a single table for a farm consisting of oyster tables made of metallic wire structures on which porous bags of oysters are laid. This work is carried out...

Influence of morphological changes on suspended sediment dynamics in a macrotidal estuary: diachronic analysis in the Seine Estuary (France) from 1960 to 2010 ArchiMer
Grasso, Florent; Le Hir, Pierre.
Estuaries are subject to extensive morphological changes through human activities, such as deepening and narrowing via dredging and channelization. The estuary sediment load, characterised by the estuarine turbidity maximum (ETM), can severely increase in response to channel deepening, shifting the estuary from a natural to hyperturbid state. The main processes driving the estuarine circulation, hydrology and sediment dynamics are relatively well known. However, their relative influence on suspended sediment concentration (SSC), as well as their role in the transition toward hyperturbid estuaries, is still a subject of debate. Therefore, this study aims at investigating the relative contribution of key estuarine drivers (gravitational circulation and tidal...

Investigating Rhône River plume (Gulf of Lions, France) dynamics using metrics analysis from the MERIS 300m Ocean Color archive (2002 − 2012) ArchiMer
Gangloff, Aurelien; Verney, Romaric; Doxaran, David; Ody, Anouck; Estournel, Claude.
In coastal environments, river plumes are major transport mechanisms for particulate matter, nutriments and pollutants. Ocean colour satellite imagery is a valuable tool to explore river turbid plume characteristics, providing observations at high temporal and spatial resolutions of suspended particulate matter (SPM) concentration over a long time period, covering a wide range of hydro-meteorological conditions. We propose here to use the MERIS-FR (300 m) Ocean Colour archive (2002–2012) in order to investigate Rhône River turbid plume patterns generated by the two main forcings acting on the north-eastern part of the Gulf of Lions (France): wind and river freshwater discharge. Results are exposed considering plume metrics (area of extension,...

In situ record of sedimentary processes near the Rhone River mouth during winter events (Gulf of Lions, Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Marion, C.; Dufois, Francois; Arnaud, Mireille; Vella, C..
The environment is impacted by natural and anthropogenic disturbances that occur at different spatial and temporal scales, and that lead to major changes and even disequilibria when exceeding the resiliency capacities of the ecosystem. With an annual mean flow of 1700 m(3) s(-1), the Rhone River is the largest of the western Mediterranean basin. Its annual solid discharges vary between 2 and 20 Mt, with flood events responsible for more than 70% of these amounts. In the marine coastal area, close to the mouth, both flocculation and aggregation lead to the formation of fine-grained deposits, i.e. the prodelta. This area is characterized by sediment accumulation rates up to 20-50 cm yr(-1) and high accumulations of particle reactive contaminants such as...

Rôle des herbiers de Zostères (Zostera noltii) sur la dynamique sédimentaire du Bassin d'Arcachon ArchiMer
Ganthy, Florian.
The intertidal flats in the Arcachon lagoon are extensively colonized by seagrass meadows of Zostera noltii. The last ten years these meadows experienced a drastic regression of their surface area. Understanding the impact of seagrass on hydrodynamics and sediment dynamics is required to anticipate the consequences of meadows regression on the sediment dynamics of the Arcachon lagoon. Flume experiments with natural seagrass highlighted a strong velocity attenuation associated with a turbulence increase near the bed within seagrass canopies. An increase in sediment protection from erosion and in deposition fluxes related to the seagrass growth was found. Erosion tests showed seasonal variability of sediment resistance against erosion associated with changes...

Contributions des traceurs radioactifs a l''etude des mouvements sedimentaires en Baie de Seine ArchiMer
Avoine, J; Caillot, A; Hoslin, R; Larsonneur, C; Massias, L; Quesney, M.
Sediment dynamics have been studied from 1979 to 1984 by the use of radio active tracers, to quantify sediment transport and to know the limits of tides and swell action in terms of sediment composition and depth. This technique has allowed the study of sand drifting (between -2 m and -15 m) and resuspension of muddy sediments. The effects of sediment movements on estuarine sediment accumulation are included in this report.

Experimental and numerical characterization of an oyster farm impact on the flow ArchiMer
Gaurier, Benoit; Germain, Gregory; Kervella, Youen; Davourie, Julia; Cayocca, Florence; Lesueur, Patrick.
Shellfish farming, particularly oyster farms, suffers from strong siltation phenomena which are harmful to the production of shellfish. The lack of knowledge about the impact of an oyster farm on the wave propagation and on the flow remains a significant difficulty for the comprehension of sediment transport processes in coastal zones. These effects are one of the possible sources of sedimentation. The study presented here focuses on describing finely hydrodynamical phenomena (velocity fields, turbulence parameters) around oyster tables. The analysis is based on experimental trials carried out in a flume tank on reduced models of oyster tables. Experiments highlight the flow perturbations in the near field and constitute a database for validation of...

La dynamique sedimentaire en Baie de Seine nord-orientale, fluctuations et evolution de la couverture meuble ArchiMer
Crevel, L.
This paper summarizes the main results obtained by the author at the time of his thesis. Sediment granulometry, composition and distribution are exposed in the first part. The use of factor analysis on sediment samples allows for the classification of soft sediments and to study its evolution during one and several years. Since 1978, the north-eastern Seine Bay sedimentation seems to be stable for all fluctuations and slitting in Antifer oil terminal.

Impact of natural (waves and currents) and anthropogenic (trawl) resuspension on the export of particulate matter to the open ocean Application to the Gulf of Lion (NW Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Ferre, B; De Madron, X; Estournel, C; Ulses, C; Le Corre, Gildas.
Modern sediment deposits on continental margins form a vast reservoir of particulate matter that is regularly affected by resuspension processes. Resuspension by bottom trawling on shelves with strong fishing activity can modify the scale of natural disturbance by waves and currents. Recent field data show that the impact of bottom trawls on fine sediment resuspension per unit surface is comparable with that of the largest storms. We assessed the impact of both natural and anthropogenic processes on the dispersal of riverborne particles and shelf sediments on the Gulf of Lion shelf. We performed realistic numerical simulations of resuspension and transport forced by currents and waves or by a fleet of bottom trawlers. Simulations were conducted for a...

Sediment Distribution and Composition on the Shallow Water Carbonate Basin of the Zanzibar Channel OceanDocs
Shaghude, Y.W..
The sediments of the shallow water carbonate basin of the Zanzibar channel were investigated to describe their general characteristics in terms of composition and grain size distribution. The surface sediment composition was dominated by carbonate sands (with CaCO3 > 30%), except in the area adjacent to the mainland coastline and a thin lobe which projects from Ruvu River to the middle of the channel. The mean grain size distribution closely resembled that of the carbonate content, where the Tidally Dominated Reef Platform Sediments (TDRPS) located east of the Zanzibar channel were characterised by medium to coarse sands and the siliciclastic sediments adjacent to the mainland are characterised by fine sand. The TDRPS were the most poorly sorted...

Etude de l’hydrodynamique sédimentaire de la lagune de Bizerte OceanDocs
Béjaoui, B.; Brahim, M.; Ataoui, A..
