Crop size influences pre-dispersal seed predation in the Brazilian Cerrado Acta Botanica
Christianini,Alexander V..
ABSTRACT Many pre-dispersal seed predators are specialized insects that rely on seeds for larval development. These insects may respond to the amount of seeds produced by a plant (i.e. crop size), increasing the proportion of seeds damaged with increases in seed numbers. Large seeds have more resources and spend more time in plants to complete their development and are probably more prone to be preyed on by those insects than small seeds. Here I tested how crop size and seed mass influence pre-dispersal seed predation in plants from the Cerrado savannas of Brazil. I related plant crop size to pre-dispersal seed predation for Xylopia aromatica and Erythroxylum pelleterianum. A literature review was performed to test if seed mass may explain among-species...

The role of historical and ecological factors on initial survival of Copaifera langsdorffii Desf. (Fabaceae) Acta Botanica
Fagundes,Marcílio; Costa,Fernanda Vieira da; Antunes,Suélen Ferreira; Maia,Maria Luiza Bicalho; Queiroz,Antônio César Medeiros de; Oliveira,Leonardo Queiroz; Faria,Maurício Lopes de.
The plant population dynamic is affected by ecological and evolutionary processes that operate at all stages of the plant life cycle. The aim of this study was to characterize the seed and seedling performance of Copaifera langsdorffii by testing four hypotheses: the resource concentration hypothesis; the relationship between seed size and germinability hypothesis; the relationship between seed size and seedling vigor hypothesis; and the intraspecific seedling competition hypothesis. All seeds used in the experiments were collected from 35 C. langsdorffii plants located in a fragment of the Brazilian cerrado (savanna). The number of fruits per plant negatively affected Rhinochenus brevicollis attacks on C. langsdorffii seeds. Therefore, this result does...

Seed weight variation of wyoming sagebrush in Northern Nevada Biocell
Busso,Carlos A.; Perryman,Barry L..
Seed size is a crucial plant trait that may potentially affect not only immediate seedling success but also the subsequent generation. We examined variation in seed weight of Wyoming sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata ssp. wyomingensis Beetle and Young), an excellent candidate species for rangeland restoration. The working hypothesis was that a major fraction of spatial and temporal variability in seed size (weight) of Wyoming sagebrush could be explained by variations in mean monthly temperatures and precipitation. Seed collection was conducted at Battle Mountain and Eden Valley sites in northern Nevada, USA, during November of 2002 and 2003. Frequency distributions of seed weight varied from leptokurtic to platykurtic, and from symmetry to skewness to the...

Preliminar evaluation of performance in topcrosses between vegetable type and grain type soybean BABT
Yokomizo,Gilberto K.; Vello,Natal A.; Nekastchalow,Marcos C..
Studies were conducted to evaluate the performance of topcrosses between food type soybean (with tendency to low physiological quality of the seeds) with two adapted grain type, seeking to associate adequate human food characteristics with adaptability. The conclusions were: a) The best topcrosses for vegetable type soybean were obtained predominantly with ´FT-2` and for seed yield with ´Doko`; b) The evaluated topcrosses presented high sensibility to winter conditions in comparison to summer, consequently the selection process in the winter it must be avoided; c) The selection for food type soybean it must be established in adequate values between individual plant yield and one hundred seed weight.

Path analysis under multicollinearity in soybean BABT
Bizeti,Henrique Stoco; Carvalho,Claudio Guilherme Portela de; Souza,José Roberto Pinto de; Destro,Deonisio.
This study aimed to establish the phenotypic correlations among several soybean traits with grain yield in direct and indirect effects using path analysis, and to compare alternative methods for minimizing the adverse effects of multicollinearity in estimating path coefficients. The experiment was conducted in greenhouse in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Nine soybean genotypes belonging to three seed size categories were used. The correlation studies and the path analysis showed that the seed size was not important for increased yield. The number of nodes and plant height at maturity showed significant correlation with grain yield. Using the least square methodology, the results obtained by path analysis under multicollinearity...

Resprouting ability and intensity after damage in seedlings of the large-seeded species Araucaria angustifolia Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Alabarce,Fernanda da Silva; Dillenburg,Lucia Rebello.
The role of seed reserves on the ability to resprout and on the responses of resprouting in Araucaria angustifoliawas investigated. Seedlings were separated into three groups: plants which had their shoot damaged, a similar group in which damaged plants had their connection to the supporting seed removed, and a control group. All damaged seedlings resprouted, but those which remained connected to their seeds had a greater mass of resprouted shoots than the ones disconnected from their seeds. A greater accumulation of seed mass in the underground hypocotyl was a very distinct initial response to damage, but, on the long run, damaged plants were able to reestablish a biomass allocation pattern, which was very similar to the control plants. These results...

Association between biometric characteristics of tomato seeds and seedling growth and development Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Peñaloza,Patricia; Durán,José María.
Background The size and weight of tomato seeds depend on genetics and can be modified by environment and management. In some species, a strong relation has been described between physical aspects of the seeds and the quality of the corresponding seedlings, but this cannot be considered a general rule. The objective of this research was to identify any association between the biometric characteristics of tomato seeds and the growth and development of their seedlings. Results A total of 18 lots of hybrid tomato seeds were used (from indeterminate plants with round fruits), belonging to six varieties from two reproduction seasons. Each lot was evaluated for seed size and weight, and seed quality, in terms of the germination test (5 and 14 d after sowing). The...

Influence of seed size and ecological factors on the germination and emergence of field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis) Planta Daninha
Tanveer,A; Tasneem,M; Khaliq,A; Javaid,M.M; Chaudhry,M.N.
An understanding of seed germination ecology of weeds can assist in predicting their potential distribution and developing effective management strategies. Influence of environmental factors and seed size on germination and seedling emergence of Convolvulus arvensis (field bindweed) was studied in laboratory and greenhouse conditions. Germination occurred over a wide range of constant temperatures, between 15 and 40 ºC, with optimum germination between 20 and 25 ºC. Time to start germination, time to 50% germination and mean germination time increased while germination percentage and germination index decreased with an increase in temperature from 20 ºC, salinity and osmotic stress. However, germination was tolerant to low salt (25 mM) or osmotic stress...
