Seroprevalences of Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum in Pet Rabbits in Japan OAK
SALMAN, Doaa; OOHASHI, Eiji; MOHAMED, Adel Elsayed Ahmed; ABD EL-MOTTELIB, Abd El-Raheem; OKADA, Tadashi; IGARASHI, Makoto; 五十嵐, 慎.
The potential contamination of Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum oocysts in the human environment is a concern from the public health viewpoint. However, estimation of their seroprevalences in humans cannot be performed in a manner that distinguishes between oocysts and tissue cysts as a source of infection. Rabbits are considered popular pet animals in Japan that can acquire natural infections by the aforementioned parasites only through the ingestion of oocysts. Therefore, this study was conducted to estimate the seroprevalences of T. gondii and N. caninum in pet rabbits in Japan as an indicator of the possible oocyst contamination in the environment surrounding human beings. Serum samples of 337 rabbits were examined by different serological...

Seroprevalence survey of H9N2 avian influenza virus in backyard chickens around the Caspian Sea in Iran Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Hadipour,MM.
Since 1998, an epidemic of avian influenza occurred in the Iranian poultry industry. The identified agent presented low pathogenicity, and was subtyped as an H9N2 avian influenza virus. Backyard chickens can play an important role in the epidemiology of H9N2 avian influenza virus infection. Close contact of backyard chickens with migratory birds, especially with aquatic birds, as well as neighboring poultry farms, may pose the risk of transmitting avian influenza virus, but little is known about the disease status of backyard poultry. A H9N2 avian influenza virus seroprevalence survey was carried out in 700 backyard chickens from villages around the Caspian Sea, Northern Iran, using the hemagglutination-inhibition (HI) test. The studied backyard chickens...

Serological survey of antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii in food animals from São Paulo state, Brazil Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
Meireles,Luciana Regina; Galisteo Jr.,Andrés Jimenez; Andrade Jr.,Heitor Franco de.
Toxoplasmosis is one of the most prevalent parasitic infections of man and livestock, and its transmission has usually been attributed to ingestion of undercooked or raw meat from infected livestock, with the infection rate in those animals being an important risk predictor of human disease, high in Brazil and São Paulo State. Looking for this public health problem, we tested serum samples from cattle, goat, sheep and chicken from the State of São Paulo, Brazil, for IgG antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii were found in 31.00% (62/200) of sheep, 17.00% (34/200) of goat and 11.00% (22/200) of cattle, without positive sample in chicken. Despite differences in feeding habits of each...

Low seroprevalence of Zika virus in Cameroonian blood donors BJID
Gake,Bouba; Vernet,Marie A.; Leparc-Goffart,Isabelle; Drexler,Jan Felix; Gould,Ernest A.; Gallian,Pierre; Lamballerie,Xavier de.
Abstract A Zika virus seroepidemiology study was performed in 1084 blood donors collected from August to October 2015 in six sites of Cameroon representing a large panel of eco-environments. Samples were tested using an anti-NS1 IgG ELISA detection kit and positives were further confirmed by seroneutralization. The observed global seroprevalence was low (around 5%, peaking at 10% and 7.7% in Douala and Bertoua, respectively) with risk factors associated with seropositivity pointing to the existence of a local (peri-)sylvatic cycle of transmission. These results call attention to the potential introduction and subsequent spread in African urban areas of Asian genotype Zika virus currently circulating in the Americas and adapted to transmission by...

Seroprevalence of chikungunya virus infection in five hospitals within Anyigba, Kogi State of Nigeria BJID
Omatola,Cornelius A.; Onoja,Bernard A.; Fassan,Peter K.; Osaruyi,Stephanie A.; Iyeh,Mercy; Samuel,Matthew A.; Haruna,Peace U..
ABSTRACT Febrile illnesses in developing countries are often misdiagnosed as malaria or typhoid fever. Although arboviral infections have similar clinical symptoms, they are usually not screened because of limited resources and the fact that there are several viruses in this group. Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) has been isolated in parts of Nigeria, but there is no documented evidence of the infection in Kogi State. This study determined seroprevalence of active and past CHIKV infection among febrile patients who tested negative for malaria and typhoid fever. Sera from 243 febrile patients were screened for CHIKV IgG and IgM using an immunochromatographic test kit. Clinical and socio-demographic variables were collected using a structured questionnaire.
