Frequency of transferable multiple antibiotic resistance amongst coliform bacteria isolated from a treated sewage effluent in Antofagasta, Chile Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Silva,Juan; Castillo,Gabriela; Callejas,Lorena; López,Héctor; Olmos,Janet.
Antibiotic-resistant coliform bacteria from raw and treated water from activated sludge of a sewage treatment plant were isolated on eosin methylene blue agar (EMB) plates in the separate presence of ampicillin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol and streptomycin. Antibiotic resistant coliforms obtained from inflow and effluent waters were studied to determine influences of treatment on the species composition, resistance patterns and transferable resistance in these bacteria. The bacterial counts obtained showed a high proportion of antibiotic resistant coliforms in the treated effluent. The resistant coliform species were eliminated at different rates by the treatment. Escherichia coli decreased, whereas the proportion of Klebsiella sp increased. The...

Improving the efficacy of sewage treatment decreases norovirus contamination in oysters ArchiMer
Schaeffer, Julien; Treguier, Cathy; Piquet, Jean-come; Gachelin, Sonia; Cochennec-laureau, Nathalie; Le Saux, Jean-claude; Garry, Pascal; Le Guyader, Soizick.
As human population increases worldwide, water quality will become increasingly problematic, and food consumed raw may be of higher risk. This is already evident for oysters grown in coastal areas - despite regulations based on bacterial indicators, oysters are still implicated in food-borne outbreaks worldwide. The pathogens most frequently detected are human noroviruses, which are shed at high concentrations in human excreta and are very resistant to environmental conditions. Sewage treatment plants usually apply a variety of steps such as activated sludge treatment, chlorine or UV disinfection to eliminate contaminants, these processes have variable efficacy. This study demonstrates the impact of replacing an old lagoon-based sewage treatment plant with...

Ecologie de bassins de lagunage pour le traitement d’effluents domestiques en milieu tropical humide (Côte d'Ivoire). OceanDocs
Guiral, D.; Bouvy, M.; Arfi, R.; Bambara, S..

Longitudinal study on occurrence of adenoviruses and hepatitis A virus in raw domestic sewage in the city of Limeira, São Paulo BJM
Barrella,Karina Medici; Garrafa,Patrícia; Monezi,Telma Alves; Hársi,Charlotte Marianna; Salvi,Cleber; Violante,Paula Alessandra B. Costa; Mehnert,Dolores Ursula.
The aim of this study was to verify the presence and annual distribution of adenoviruses and hepatitis A virus in domestic sewage in the city of Limeira, São Paulo. Fifty samples with a volume of 8 liters each were collected weekly from December 2004 to December 2005. The viruses were concentrated by filtration through positively charged ZP60S filter membranes, followed by ultracentrifugation. Human adenoviruses (HAdV) were detected by PCR followed by nested-PCR and screening for species F was done by restriction of the PCR product with TaqI endonuclease. Virus infectivity assays were performed by inoculation of concentrates onto HEp-2 cell monolayers. RT-PCR was used for the detection of hepatitis A virus. HAdV were detected in all samples, and 64% of...
