The Morphometry of the Angle of Mandible and its Correlation with Age and Sex in the eThekwini Metropolitan Region: A Panoramic Study 77
Pillay,S; Ishwarkumar,S; De Gama,B.Z; Pillay,P.
The angle of mandible is formed by the tangent line joining the posterior margin of the ramus and the base of the mandible. The angle of mandible has population-specific characteristics therefore; it is imperative to the field of forensic anthropology for age and sex determination. Literary reports regarding the use of the angle of mandible for age and sex determination vary, as some studies support it, while other studies have documented inefficiencies. Therefore, the aim of this investigation was to document the morphometry of the angle of mandible and to determine if a correlation between the angle of mandible, age and sex exists. Sixty four digital panoramic radiographs (n=128) of individuals between 16-30 years were morphometrically analysed using the...

Evaluation of Relationship Between Prevalence of Palmaris Longus Muscle and Handedness in Turkish Population 77
Karacan,Keziban; Akcaalan,Melike; Baylan,Hüseyin.
Palmaris longus (PL) is a fusiform muscle with a short belly and a long tendon that crosses superficially over flexor retinaculum. It flexes wrist and tenses palmar aponeurosis. The absence of PL prevalence varies from 0.6 % to 63.91 % in the literature. The existence of PL on the right hand is more common compared to the left hand. Thus, we aimed to determine the prevalence of PL in the Turkish population and the relation of PL absence with sex and handedness in this study. We evaluated 1050 students of Sakarya University between ages 18-28 who participated in the study (525 males, 525 females). After completing a questionnaire including handedness, the volunteers were examined on both hands using some standard tests to find out PL absences. Pearson...

Sex Variation in Occurrence of Myocardium in Human Mitral Valve Cusps 77
Gatonga,P; Odula,P. O; Saidi,H; Mandela,P.
Mitral valve cusps consist mainly of connective tissue and myocardium. Connective tissue fibres within the cusps have been demonstrated to exhibit sex variations in organisation. Mitral prolapse, a disease attributed to defects within the cusps occurs more commonly in females. Sex variations in valvular myocardium however remain to be studied. Possible variations in its organisation may enhance understanding of sex differences in prevalence of mitral prolapse. The aim of this study was to determine anatomical variations of mitral valvular myocardium by sex; by mean a comparative cross-sectional study. A total of 48 (27 male and 21 female) adult heart specimens obtained during autopsy at Nairobi City and Chiromo mortuaries after ethical approval were used....

Evaluation of Cephalic Indices: A Clue for Racial and Sex Diversity 77
Ilayperuma,Isurani.
Cephalic index is an important parameter in evaluating racial and gender differences. A large body of evidence shows a clear racial variation in cephalic index. Therefore detailed knowledge of the population specific data on biometric features of the cranium is important in the study and comparison of the crania of populations from different racial backgrounds, assessing growth and development of an individual and in the diagnosis of any abnormalities of cranial size and shape. Despite its' significance, little is known concerning the cranial morphometry in Sri Lankans. Hence, the present study was undertaken to establish the cranial indices and head shapes in an adult Sri Lankan population. A total of 400 subjects with an age span of 20-23 years were...

Hematological values and body, heart and liver weights of male and female broiler embryos of young and old breeder eggs 89
Morita,VS; Boleli,IC; Cargnelutti Filho,A.
This study analyzed broiler breeder age (29 or 60 wk-old) effects on physical characteristics of eggs (initial mass, mass loss, volume, diameter, surface area and density) and of eggshells(weight, volume, thickness, conductance, and porosity ), as well as the influence of embryo sex on hematological parameters and body, liver and heart weights during incubation (at days 13, 15, 18 and 21). Physical parameter values were lower in 29-wk-old broiler breeder eggs than those of 60-wk-old breeders, except for relative eggshell weight, which was higher. In both male and female embryos, erythrocytic parameters and the body, liver, and heart weights increased during the incubation. The embryos and their organs were heavier when derived from 60-wk-old breeder eggs...

Multivariate relationship among body protein, fat, and macrominerals of male and female Saanen goats using canonical correlation analysis 96
Vargas,Julián Andrés Castillo; Almeida,Amélia Katiane; Härter,Carla Joice; Souza,Anaiane Pereira; Fernandes,Márcia Helena Machado da Rocha; Resende,Kléber Tomás de; Teixeira,Izabelle Auxiliadora Molina de Almeida.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to investigate the multivariate relationship among body protein, fat, and macrominerals in Saanen goats of different sexes (castrated males, females, and intact males) using canonical correlation analysis. Individual records of 274 Saanen goats combined from 10 studies was used. Two sets of body constituents were established: the first one contained variables related to body protein or fat (canonical variate U) and the second contained variables related to body calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, or potassium (canonical variate V). Two canonical pairs were identified for each sex. However, irrespective of sex, first canonical pairs accounted for more than 87% of variance of the dependent variables, these only...

Effect of sex and fat depot location on fat composition of Rasa Aragonesa lambs 115
Horcada-Ibáñez,Alberto; Beriain-Apesteguía,María J.; Lizaso-Tirapu,Guadalupe; Insausti-Barrenetxea,Kizkitza; Purroy-Unanua,Antonio.
The quality of lamb fat is important in sheep carcass markets because it affects the degree of acceptance by consumers. In Spain, consumption of beef and lamb is important and young lambs are highly valued. In addition, the precocity of the female determines slaughter at younger ages than males, to avoid excessive fat. Therefore, the effect of sex and fat depot location (omental, mesenteric, kidney knob, subcutaneous, intermuscular and intramuscular) on the fatty acid composition in 30 Rasa Aragonesa lambs (15 males and 15 females) of 24 kg live weight and three months of age, were studied. Oleic, palmitic and stearic fatty acids were the main fatty acids making up the fat in all the fat depots from lambs. There were no significant differences (p>0.05)...

Variation in the behavioral responses of Budgerigars Melopsittacus undulatus to an alarm call in relation to sex and season 42
Nicolas,Gérard; Fraigneau,Cloé; Aubin,Thierry.
In the Budgerigar Melopsittacus undulatus, the significance of a conspecific alarm call was investigated in two seasons, winter and spring. Two qualitatively different behavioral responses were displayed by the receivers in reply to playbacks: call(s) and/or taking flight(s). The comparative analysis of the number of birds responding to the alarm and to the control signals revealed two major facts: 1) in both seasons, the responses to the alarm signal were only observed for females, not for males, 2) qualitatively, females exhibited a great inter-season variability in their behavioral responses to the hearing of an alarm call. In winter, the females were more predisposed to emit acoustic responses while in spring they mainly took flight.
