Livestock Subsidies and Rangeland Degradation in Central Crete Ecology and Society
Lorent, Hugues; University of Louvain; hugues.lorent@uclouvain.be; Tsiourlis, Georgios M.; National Agricultural Research Foundation (NAGREF); gmtsiou@fri.gr; Lambin, Eric; University of Louvain; lambin@geog.ucl.ac.be.
Marginal and unstable environmental conditions force stockbreeders in drylands to develop adaptive strategies to ensure stability of production. In intensive market-oriented pastoral systems, the partial substitution of rangeland forage production by external feed increases the influence of commodity prices in stockbreeders’ decisions, which become increasingly decoupled from environmental constraints. In Mediterranean countries of the European Union (EU), Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) subsidies also influence agricultural practices, potentially increasing environmental impacts. By modeling subsidy allocation to sheep and goat breeders in Crete, we showed that livestock subsidies for Less Favoured Areas (LFA) stimulated flock growth up to a...

Feeding sainfoin to goats – influence on milk and cheese quality and yield Organic Eprints
Heckendorn, Felix; Schwery, Moritz; Volken, Herbert; Maurer, Veronika; Simonnet, Xavier.
Although the administration of sainfoin is associated with anthelmintic effects, information on the consequences of feeding this legume on product quality is scarce. In the present study we looked at milk quality and yield of goats fed either sainfoin or a non-tanniferous control forage. Twelve lactating goats of the alpine breed were used for the study. They received grass/clover hay for a period of 15 days (grass clover feeding period, GCFP). Then the feed was switched to sainfoin hay (approx. 90 % of daily intake) for another 15 days (sainfoin feeding period, SFP). Both feeds were supplemented with concentrates in order to guarantee isoproteic and isoenergetic feeding throughout the trial. Milk yield and quality (fat, protein, energy and urea) were...

Organic goat and sheep dairy in the Netherlands Organic Eprints
Eekeren, van, Nick.
The dairy sector is the largest organic sector in the Netherlands. Not only cows, but also goats and sheep are kept to produce milk and a variety of cheeses. Although a significant share of total organic dairy production is exported, domestic consumers are continuing to buy more and more Dutch organic dairy. To facilitate organic dairy farmers, Wageningen UR and Louis Bolk Institute carry out a variety of research aimed specifically at organic dairy production. The report contains sector facts, sector aspirations, current affairs and research projects.

Untersuchungen zu Liegenischen für Milchziegen Organic Eprints
Barth, Kerstin; Ordolff, Dieter; Mayer, Claus.
The legislative rules of keeping ruminants on organic farms do not differentiate between the requirements of the different species for the housing systems. Thus, the types of locomotion typical for goats (e. g. climbing, jumping) have not to take in consideration in stables designed for goat keeping. Some farmers offer their animals elevated resting platforms (niches), but data concerning the preferences of the goats and the labour management of such areas are not available. A herd of non-lactating goats (breed: Bunte Deutsche Edelziege) was parted in six experimental groups with ten animals in each group. Over a period of seven days the animals were kept separated in a part of the stable furnished with resting niches. Twelve niches were arranged on three...

Organic beef and sheep production in the uplands Organic Eprints
ANON,.
The organic unit at ADAS Redesdale was established to evaluate the physical and financial implications of converting a progressive hill/upland unit to an organic system. Conversion of 400 ha, 600 breeding ewes (in 3 flocks) and 35 suckler cows was completed in 1993. One organic flock (Organic Dipper ) was managed as a direct comparison with a conventionally managed system (Conventional Dipper). During the early years following conversion, an organic system was developed which, financially, enabled the organic unit to compete favourably with a comparable conventional system. This was on the basis of maintaining similar stocking rates, and pushing the organic system towards maximum output. As the experiment progressed, it became increasingly clear that a...

Monitoring the welfare of sheep in conventional and organic farms using an ANI 35 L derived method Organic Eprints
Napolitano, Prof Fabio; De Rosa, Dr Giuseppe; Ferrante, Dr Valentina; Braghieri, Dr Ada; Barbieri, S..
The present study was undertaken to evaluate the inter-observer reliability of a welfare monitoring scheme to be applied to sheep, and compare the welfare state of the animals between 10 organic and 10 conventional sheep farms. No significant differences were observed between organic and conventional farms in terms of housing characteristics and animal based parameters (P>0.10). This result may be due to the fact that most of the farms, both conventional and organic, based their farming systems on an extensive use of the land by grazing animals. The monitoring protocol proved to be feasible (the mean time needed to perform the assessment of welfare was 45 min per farm) and reliable: a significant correlation between observers was observed for total...

Biologische Helminthenkontrolle bei Weidetieren mit nematophagen Pilzen Organic Eprints
Hertzberg, Hubertus; Larsen, Michael; Maurer, Veronika.

Bender, Sophia; Ude, Gracia; Georg, Heiko; Weißmann, Friedrich; Aulrich, Karen; Rahmann, Gerold.
In contrast to the increasing demand for dairy goat products in Germany, a market for goat kid meat as a related product is more or less non-existing. Thus, the objective of our study was to develop a concept for organic goat kid meat production for dairy goat farms. In collaboration with a wholesaler, organic dairy goat farmers and marketing research the experimental part of our study was to find out if cross-breeding of meat-goats could improve meat quality and performance of fattening goat kids together with other factors like concentrate ratio of the diet, housing system as well as raising strategy. First results indicate that a low input level of concentrates of 10 % of total dry matter intake per goat kid and year is not sufficient to meet the...

EX-POST EVALUATION OF GHG EMISSIONS AND ENERGY CONSUMPTION IN ORGANIC AND CONVENTIONAL MEAT SHEEP FARMS IN FRANCE OVER 26 YEARS Organic Eprints
Dakpo, Hervé; LAIGNEL, Gabriel; Benoit, Marc.
The environmental impact of livestock is an important issue, and organic farming (OF) is particularly questioned about greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions. This study aims at comparing GHG emissions and non-renewable energy consumption in meat sheep production, in OF and conventional farming systems. These two criteria have been calculated ex-post on 1261 French year-farms monitored over 26 years. The functional unit used is the carcass weight and allocation between meat and wool is mass based. Regarding GHG emissions, the results show that organic farms emits 5% less GHG than conventional ones, with a higher proportion of methane and less indirect CO2 associated to less inputs use. Given the methodological difficulties, it is hard to argue if carbon...

Bollinger, SB; Moakes, Simon; Stolze, Matthias; Werne, S..
To determine the current control measures for strointestinal nematodes (GIN) on Swiss organic small ruminant farms, a phone questionnaire was developed and conducted. The survey also aimed to assess the understanding and implementation of possible alternative GIN control options. In total, 52 meat sheep and 58 dairy goat farm questionnaires were completed, and it was found that in general, farmers were aware of the potential benefit of an adequate grazing management to reduce GIN infection. However, practical realisation was often limiting. On average it was stated that adult meat sheep and dairy goats were drenched 1.5 and 1.3 times per animal and year, respectively, whilst lambs and kids were treated 1.6 and 1.3 times per animal and year, respectively....

Organic livestock farming systems in the Massif Central: evolution (2008-2011) and analysis of the technical and economic performances and drivers Organic Eprints
Veysset, Patrick; Tauriac, R; Benoit, M.; Belvèze, J; Patout, O; Reuillon, J.-L.; Morin, E; Vallas, M.
The “Organic Farming Massif Central” hub and fifteen partners lead a program on sustainability and on the technical and economic operation of OF livestock systems in the Massif Central. This systemic and multi-year study (2008-2011) is based on data from a constant sample over four years, from 56 farms comprising four types of products: cattle and sheep, dairy and meat. Over 4 years, the technical and economic results are quite stable, and at a good level, but with great variability inter-farms. With lower labor productivity, but with a more diversified crop rotation, a good food self-sufficiency and good technical skills, the farms with the highest income get an income more than four times higher than the farms with the lowest income .

Antiparasitic activity of chicory (Cichorium intybus) and its natural bioactive compounds in livestock: a review Organic Eprints
Peña-Espinoza, Miguel; Valente, Angela H.; Thamsborg, Stig M.; Simonsen, Henrik T.; Boas, Ulrik; Enemark, Heidi L.; López-Muñoz, Rodrigo; Williams, Andrew R..
Increasing drug resistance in gastrointestinal (GI) parasites of livestock and concerns about chemical residues in animal products and the environment are driving the development of alternative control strategies that are less reliant on the use of synthetic drugs. An increasingly investigated approach is the use of bioactive forages with antiparasitic properties as part of the animal’s diet (nutraceuticals) or as potential sources of novel, natural parasiticides. Chicory (Cichorium intybus) is a multi-purpose crop and one of the most promising bioactive forages in temperate regions, and numerous in vivo trials have explored its potential against parasitic nematodes in livestock. However, it is unclear whether chicory can induce a direct and broad activity...

H., HOSTE; J.-P., GUITARD; J.-C., PONS.
Gastrointestinal trichostrongylosis represent one of the main constraint associated with the breeding of ruminants on pastures which is associated with Organic Farming. Besides the repeated use of anthelmintic treatments, the control of these parasitic infections can also be based on an improvement of the host response and on the reduction of animal infection by decreasing the contact with infective larvae through pertinent grazing management. Mixed grazing between different hosts species, particularly between cattle and small ruminants, represents one of the method to reduce the infestivity of pastures. This method is based on the relatively high specificity of many nematode species for one host. The advantages and limits of mixed grazing...
