Zinc isotopic variations in ureilites ArchiMer

The Ureilite Parent Body (UPB) was a C-rich planetary embryo disrupted by impact. Ureilites are fragments of the UPB mantle and among the most numerous achondrites. Zinc isotopic data are presented for 26 unbrecciated ureilites and a trachyandesite (ALM-A) from the same parent body. The δ66Zn values of ureilites range from 0.40 to 2.71 ‰ including literature results. Zinc isotopic compositions do not correlate with the compositions of olivine cores, with C and O isotopic compositions, with Zn abundances, nor with shock grades. The wide range of δ66Zn displayed by the ureilites is chiefly explained by evaporation processes that took place during the catastrophic breakup of the UPB. A Latent-Variable Approach to Modelling Multiple and Resurgent Meat Scares in Italy AgEcon

This paper aims to measure the time pattern of multiple and resurgent food scares and their direct and cross-product impacts on consumer response. The Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) is augmented by a flexible stochastic framework which has no need for additional explanatory variables such as a media index. Italian aggregate household data on meat demand is used to assess the time-varying impact of a resurgent BSE crisis (1996 and 2000) and the 1999 Dioxin crisis. The impact of the first BSE crisis on preferences seems to be reabsorbed after a few months. The second wave of the scare at the end of 2000 had a much stronger effect on preferences and the positive shift in chicken demand continued to persist after the onset of the crisis. Think Again: Higher Elasticity of Substitution Increases Economic Resilience AgEcon

This paper shows that, counter-intuitively, a higher elasticity of substitution in model production function can lead to reduced economic resilience and larger vulnerability to shocks in production factor prices. This result is due to the fact that assuming a higher elasticity of substitution requires a recalibration of the production function parameters to keep the model initial state unchanged. This result has consequences for economic analysis, e.g., on the economic vulnerability to climate change.

Inadequate timing between corticosteroid and antibiotics applications increases mortality due to sepsis BJID

This study tested the hypothesis that the use of corticosteroids prior to antibiotics can lower the mortality rate in severe infections by S. aureus or Gram-negative bacilli, using an animal model. This study was a prospective and controlled study, placed in a university laboratory. Seven hundred and sixty mice distributed into three groups (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae infected). The interventions in each group were: I) infection control (intra-peritoneal); II) treatment solely with antibiotics (teicoplanin or amikacin); III) antibiotics administered prior to the corticosteroid (methylprednisolone); IV) antibiotics administered after the corticosteroid. Weil's disease: an unusually fulminant presentation characterized by pulmonary hemorrhage and shock BJID

A case of fulminant leptospirosis is presented, manifesting as rapid progression from acute undifferentiated febrile illness to refractory shock, jaundice, renal failure and massive pulmonary hemorrhage. The patient received aggressive intensive care unit support including prolonged intubation and ventilation. This case emphasizes that acute leptospirosis may well not be characterized by the classic scenario of a biphasic illness, but rather by a fulminant, monophasic illness.

Mesenteric lymph reperfusion exacerbates spleen injury caused by superior mesenteric artery occlusion shock BJMBR

The intestinal lymph pathway plays an important role in the pathogenesis of organ injury following superior mesenteric artery occlusion (SMAO) shock. We hypothesized that mesenteric lymph reperfusion (MLR) is a major cause of spleen injury after SMAO shock. To test this hypothesis, SMAO shock was induced in Wistar rats by clamping the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) for 1 h, followed by reperfusion for 2 h. Similarly, MLR was performed by clamping the mesenteric lymph duct (MLD) for 1 h, followed by reperfusion for 2 h. In the MLR+SMAO group rats, both the SMA and MLD were clamped and then released for reperfusion for 2 h.
