Components of sustainable animal production and the use of silvopastoral systems R. Bras. Zootec.
Broom,Donald Maurice.
ABSTRACT There is an urgent need for sustainable animal production systems. A system or procedure is sustainable if it is acceptable now and if its expected future effects are acceptable, in particular in relation to resource availability, consequences of functioning, and morality of action. What might make any animal usage system unsustainable? The system might involve depletion of resources such that a resource becomes unavailable or a product of the system might accumulate to a degree that prevents the functioning of the system. However, any effect which the general public find unacceptable makes a system unsustainable. A production system might be unsustainable because of inefficient usage of world food resources; adverse effects on human health; poor...

Horse grazing systems: understory biomass and plant biodiversity of a Pinus radiata stand Scientia Agricola
Rigueiro-Rodríguez,Antonio; Mouhbi,Rabia; Santiago-Freijanes,José Javier; González-Hernández,María del Pilar; Mosquera-Losada,María Rosa.
Horse grazing systems may affect productivity and biodiversity of understory developed under Pinus radiata D. Don silvopastoral systems, while acting as a tool to reduce the risk of fire. This study compared continuous and rotational grazing systems effect upon biomass, fractions of stem, sprouts, leaves and woody parts of Ulex europaeus L. and alpha (Species Richness, Shannon-Wiener) and beta (Jaccard and Magurran) biodiversity for a period of four years in a P. radiata silvopastoral system. The experiment consisted of a randomized block design of two treatments (continuous and rotational grazing). Biomass, and species abundances were measured - biodiversity metrics were calculated based on these results for a two years of grazing and two years of...

This study evaluated the microclimate in a system without shade (WS) and in a silvopastoral system (SP) with eucalyptus during summer and winter, by measuring the air temperature (Ta), black globe temperature (Tg), relative humidity (RH), wind speed (Ws), every 2 hours for 24 hours between rows, shade (SP) and no shade effect (WS). It was employed the randomized blocks design (months), in the plots (systems), subplots (hours) and sub-subplots (seasons). Except for Ta and RH, the Tg (24.73, 26.41ºC), Ws (3.16, 4.57 m s-1), Black globe-humidity index (BGHI) (71.83, 73.84), Thermal load index (TLI) (74.53, 76.11) and Radiant thermal load (RTL) (526.46, 595.80 W m-2), respectively for SP and WS, were higher in WS. Ta, RH and Ws had a quadratic effect of hour....

Soil macrofauna in wooded pasture with legume trees Ciência Rural
Silva,Lusimar Lamarte Gonzaga Galindo da; Resende,Alexander Silva de; Dias,Paulo Francisco; Correia,Maria Elizabeth Fernandes; Scoriza,Rafael Nogueira.
Grasslands afforestation aims at adding different soil uses in a way they become profitable for their owners. As such handling aims at minimizing impacts, the current study had as its goal the use of soil macrofauna in order to evaluate legume afforestation effects on the soil, regardless the depth. Thus, nitrogen fixing species were inserted onto grassland areas and the macrofauna collection was performed 6 years after their planting in the 0-10cm, 10-20cm and 20.30cm layers, in winter and summer. Leguminous influence was different between depths and times of the year. It mostly favors communities under "Mimosa" Genus treetops. Besides, the effects from climatic seasonal variations on invertebrates were mitigated by the implementation of such legume trees
