Energetic efficiency of an agricultural tractor in function of tire inflation pressure REA
Monteiro,Leonardo de A.; Albiero,Daniel; Lanças,Kleber P.; Bueno,André V.; Masiero,Fabricio C..
The tire inflation pressure, among other factors, determines the efficiency in which a tractor can exert traction. It was studied the effect of using two tire inflation pressures, 110.4 kPa in the front and rear wheels, 124.2 kPa in the front wheel and 138 kPa in the rear wheels, the energetic efficiency of an agricultural tractor of 147 kW of engine power, in the displacement speed of 6.0 km.h-1, on track with firm surface, with the tractor engine speed of 2000 rpm. For each condition of the tire pressure, the tested tractor was subjected to constant forces in the drawbar of 45 kN and 50 kN, covering 30 meters. It was used a randomized complete block with a 2x2 factorial arrangement (tire pressure and drawbar power) with four replications, totaling 16...

Evaluation of tractive performance of four agricultural tractors in laterally inclined terrain REA
Leite,Fabricio; Santos,João E. G. dos; Lanças,Kleber P.; Leite Júnior,João B..
The present work aimed to evaluate the tractive performance of four agricultural tractors with auxiliary front traction in function of six lateral inclinations in a lateral track of trials, which belongs to the Agronomic Sciences Faculty from the São Paulo State University, Campus of Botucatu. The lateral inclinations were 0; 5; 10; 15; 20 and 25 degrees. In all of these situations, the tractors operated with predetermined load of an imposed traction to the pulled tractor of 40 kN in the inclination of 0 degrees. Hence a delineation in random blocks was used, considering six inclinations and four tractors, and with three repetitions for each treatment. The analyzed variables were slippage, tractive force, hourly fuel consumption, and speed. It was...

PERFORMANCE OF CORN SOWING IN FERTILIZATION SYSTEM AND INTERCROPPING REA
Cortez,Jorge W.; Furlani,Carlos E. A.; Silva,Rouverson P. da; Arcoverde,Sálvio N. S..
ABSTRACT The performance of the tractor-seeder can be influenced by factors related to the seeder, as loads and crop. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the performance of tractor-seeder at sowing in the corn crop in function of the fertilizer systems (at presowing and at sowing) and those intercropping of crops (corn + bean-Stizolobium deeringianum, corn + bean-Cajanus cajan and corn + bean-Dolichos lab lab). The experiment was carried out at FCAV-UNESP with totally randomized delineation, on factorial scheme (2x3) with four repetitions. The use of fertilization during the pre-sowing resulted in greater displacement speed and effective field capacity in the corn sowing operation, without changing the distribution of corn seeds; however, it...

OPERATIONAL AND ENERGY PERFORMANCE OF 250 kW DOUBLE WHEELED VERSUS RUBBER HALF-TRACKED TRACTORS IN THE SOYBEAN SOWING REA
Neto,Lauro S.; Kmiecik,Leonardo L.; Jasper,Samir P.; Zimmermann,Gabriel G.; Savi,Daniel.
ABSTRACT The technological innovation in agriculture seeks to improve the performance of mechanized assemblies and, currently, rubber half-tracks are a valuable solution for agricultural tractors, combining traction performance and less soil compaction. The objective of the experiment was to evaluate the operational and energy performance of double wheeled versus rubber half-tracked agricultural tractors in the soybean sowing. The experiment was conducted in a strip-plot design with a double factorial arrangement (2×3). The first factor consisted of a tractor with double wheels on the front and rear axles versus a tractor with single wheels on the front axle and rubber half-tracks on the rear axle, while the second factor consisted of three different...

Replication slippage of the thermophilic DNA polymerases B and D from the Euryarchaeota Pyrococcus abyssi ArchiMer
Castillo-lizardo, Melissa; Henneke, Ghislaine; Viguera, Enrique.
Replication slippage or slipped-strand mispairing involves the misalignment of DNA strands during the replication of repeated DNA sequences, and can lead to genetic rearrangements such as microsatellite instability. Here, we show that PolB and PolD replicative DNA polymerases from the archaeal model Pyrococcus abyssi (Pab) slip in vitro during replication of a single-stranded DNA template carrying a hairpin structure and short direct repeats. We find that this occurs in both their wild-type (exo+) and exonuclease deficient (exo-) forms. The slippage behavior of PabPolB and PabPolD, probably due to limited strand displacement activity, resembles that observed for the high fidelity P furiosus (Pfu) DNA polymerase. The presence of PabPCNA inhibited PabPolB...

Assessing Model Assumptions in Trade Liberalization Modeling: An Application to SWOPSIM AgEcon
Herlihy, Michael; Haley, Stephen L.; Johnston, Brian G..
This report reviews research on the effectiveness of acreage reduction programs and describes the methodology developed for the Static World Policy Simulation (SWOPSIM) modeling framework to capture the effect of removing these programs. It also analyzes the results of several sensitivity tests of a SWOPSIM model used by the Economic Research Service to study the effects of agricultural trade liberalization. Assumptions concerning how U.S. acreage reduction programs are modeled significantly influence predictions as to how trade liberalization affects commodity prices, production, and trade. However, these assumptions do not significantly influence predictions of how trade liberalization affects producer welfare. In terms of trade liberalization analysis,...

Forest Conservation and Slippage: Evidence from Mexico's National Payments for Ecosystem Services Program AgEcon
Alix-Garcia, Jennifer Marie; Shapiro, Elizabeth N.; Sims, Katharine R.E..
Incentive-based programs to reduce deforestation are expected to play an increasingly important role in global efforts to protect ecosystems and sequester carbon but their environmental effectiveness is not clear. We investigate program effectiveness and slippage in the context of Mexico's national payments for hydrological services program, which pays private and communal landowners to maintain forest cover on enrolled lands. To measure program impacts, we use matched controls drawn from the program applicant pool to establish counterfactual deforestation rates in the absence of payments. We find statistically significant but small to moderate avoided deforestation impacts. To examine slippage of deforestation to nonenrolled lands, we develop a model of...

Forecasting Irrigation Water Demand: A Case Study on the Flint River Basin in Georgia AgEcon
Banerjee, Swagata (Ban); Tareen, Irfan Y.; Gunter, Lewell F.; Bramblett, Jimmy; Wetzstein, Michael E..
Southeast drought conditions have accentuated the demand for irrigation in the face of restricted water supply. For allocating this supply, Georgia held an auction for withdrawing irrigated acreage. This auction withdrew 33,000 acres from irrigation, resulting in a physical estimate of a 399 acre-feet daily increase in water flow. The actual reduction is driven by crop distributional changes on the basis of economic substitution and expansion effects. In contrast to the physical estimates, an econometric model that considers these effects is developed. The differences between the physical and econometric models result in an increase in the estimate of water savings of around 19% to 24%.

Tractor perfomance as a function of speed and seeder’s tire inflation pressure Ciência Rural
Furlani,Carlos Eduardo Angeli; Cortez,Jorge Wilson; Toledo,Anderson de; Silva,Rouverson Pereira da; Grotta,Danilo Cesar Checchio; Reis,Gustavo Naves dos.
The performance of agricultural tractors under field conditions results from the interaction between tire and wheel affected by displacement speed. This work was developed to assess the performance of an agricultural tractor under different seeder's tire inflation pressure (518; 483 and 414kPa) and in two different gears providing speeds of 3.0 and 6.0km h-1. The experiment was performed at Jaboticabal Campus of São Paulo State University (UNESP). The experimental design used was entirely randomized in a 2-factor factorial design (3x2) with four replications. The draft force was influenced by the gear as well as by the required power; however, tire inflation pressure in the seeder did not change these parameters. Also, fuel consumption was influenced only...
