A Comparison of Grassland Management Systems for Beef Cattle Using Self-Contained Farmlets: Effects of Contrasting Nitrogen Inputs and Management Strategies on the Farm Economy AgEcon
Laws, J.A.; Williams, Robert J.; Pain, B.F..
The financial implications of manipulating nitrogen (N) inputs and management strategies for beef production systems were assessed. One-hectare grassland farmlets were grazed to a target sward height by beef steers; herbage surplus to grazing requirements was cut for silage. Three systems were compared: ‘CN’, conventional mineral N application to a grass monoculture and broadcast slurry; ‘TN’, tactical mineral N application at fortnightly intervals to a grass monoculture with slurry injection and the early housing of cattle; ‘GC’, a mixed grass/white clover sward with no mineral N addition and slurry injection. Comparisons were made on two contrasting soil types: a freely-draining sandy loam (site 1) and a poorly drained clay (site 2). Financial budgets...

Evaluation of Digestibility of Cooked Rice Grain using in vitro Digestion Technique CIGR Journal
Ogawa, Y..
Impact of postharvest and/or food processing (such as flour milling to agricultural and food-resource materials) on the digestibility of foodstuffs was investigated through a simulated gastro-intestinal in vitro digestion technique. The differences among the starch digestibilities of cooked rice grain and slurry were examined. In vitro digestion techniques are commonly applied to starch-based milled materials such as flours used for bread making. However, rice is not usually milled to flour but cooked as a whole for consumption. Therefore, maintaining an intact structure of cooked grain during in vitro digestion is very important to evaluate its starch digestibility. Two hundred grams of polished rice grain were cooked using electric rice cooker with 300...

COMPARATIVE EVALUATION OF MESH SIEVE PERFORMANCE OF A WET CEREAL SLURRY SIEVING MACHINE CIGR Journal
Anyanwu, Cosmas; Ibelegbu, Charity; Ugwu, Chinyere; Okonkwo, Valentine; Mgbemene, Chigbo.
This paper presents the design, construction and comparative performance evaluation a cereal slurry sieving machine. For the evaluation, wet slurries of maize, millet and sorghum were each sieved with three sieves of mesh sizes of 1.19 mm, 1.00 mm and 0.354 mm. The machine performed satisfactorily in the sieving of wet maize slurry, recording an efficiency of 85%. The output capacity was 22.07 kg/hr in comparison with 8.82 kg/hr achieved in the traditional manual method. The average sieving time for 1kg of maize slurry using the machine was about 2.5 times shorter than in manual sieving. The sieving capacity of the machine was about 2.4 times higher than that of the traditional manual method. The Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) carried out on the results...

Molecular detection of hepatitis E virus in feces and slurry from swine farms, Rio Grande do Sul, Southern Brazil Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Vasconcelos,J.; Soliman,M.C.; Staggemeier,R.; Heinzelmann,L.; Weidlich,L.; Cimirro,R.; Esteves,P.A.; Silva,A.D.; Spilki,F.R..
Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is highly disseminated among swine herds worldwide. HEV is also a threat to public health, since particularly genotypes 3 and 4 may cause acute hepatitis in human beings. No previous studies were done on the occurrence of HEV in environmental samples in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. In the present study, reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was employed to detect the presence of HEV in swine feces and in effluents from slurry lagoons in farms located in the municipality of Teutônia, inside the area of swine husbandry in the state. Pooled fecal samples from the floor of pig barns from 9 wean-to-finish farms and liquid manure samples were collected from the slurry lagoons from 8 of these farms. From the pooled fecal...

Nitrogen balance of starting barrow pigs fed on increasing lysine levels BABT
Moreira,Ivan; Fraga,Alessandro Luis; Paiano,Diovani; Oliveira,Gisele Cristina de; Scapinello,Cláudio; Martins,Elias Nunes.
The effects of increasing lysine levels on nitrogen balance of pigs fed on low protein diets were evaluated. Four treatments (diets) containing lysine levels (0.8, 1.0 1.2 and 1.4%) were applied to 12 starting (20.0 ± 1.8 kg) barrow pigs. Methionine, threonine and tryptophan were kept constant to the lysine ratio in all diets. Feces and urine were collected during a 5-day period. Nitrogen output in urine (NOU), total nitrogen output (TNO), nitrogen retention (NR), net protein utilization (NPU), biological value or feed protein (BVFP), urine urea nitrogen (UUN), and plasma urea nitrogen (PUN) were determined. PUN showed high negative correlations with BVFP (-0.84), NPU (-0.76), and NR (-0.78) and a positive correlation (0.79) to NOU. Lowest nitrogen...

Evaluation of On-Farm Quick Tests on Slurries from Southern Chile Dairy Farms Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Salazar S,Francisco; Rosas U,Marianela.
Currently in Chile, there is a lack of tools to determine the real-time nutrient contribution of slurries. This study aims to evaluate three quick tests for their accuracy in estimating the total contents of N (TN), P (TP), K (TK), and ammonium-N (N-NH4+) in dairy slurries. The quick tests included the Agros Nova Meter, Quantofix N Volumeter, and a hydrometer. While the Agros and Quantofix meters directly measure the ammonium-N content; the hydrometer indirectly estimates the total content of N, P, and K based on linear relationships with the slurry DM. Samples (73) were collected from dairy farms along Southern Chile (39° to 44° S and 71 to 73° W). Analyses were carried out on laboratory conditions using conventional techniques as well as using each of...
