Soil functioning in a toposequence under rainforest in São Paulo, Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Cooper,Miguel; Medeiros,João Carlos; Rosa,Jaqueline Dalla; Soria,José Eduardo; Toma,Raul Shiso.
Studies of soil-water dynamics using toposequences are essential to improve the understanding of soil-water-vegetation relationships. This study assessed the hydro-physical and morphological characteristics of soils of Atlantic Rainforest in the Parque Estadual de Carlos Botelho, state of São Paulo, Brazil. The study area of 10.24 ha (320 x 320 m) was covered by dense tropical rainforest (Atlantic Rainforest). Based on soil maps and topographic maps of the area, a representative transect of the soil in this plot was chosen and five soil trenches were opened to determine morphological properties. To evaluate the soil hydro-physical functioning, soil particle size distribution, bulk density (r), particle density (r s), soil water retention curves (SWRC),...

Temporal Variation of Soil Physical Quality under Conventional and No-Till Systems Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Soracco,Carlos Germán; Lozano,Luis Alberto; Villarreal,Rafael; Melani,Esteban; Sarli,Guillermo Oliverio.
ABSTRACT: Determination of soil physical quality (SPQ) is very important because it is related to many important soil processes. However, it is not clear which indicators should be considered in this evaluation, and information about temporal variation of SPQ under different soil tillage systems is scarce. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of no tillage (NT) and conventional tillage (CT) on temporal variation of capacity SPQ indicators [bulk density (BD), macroporosity (Pmac), air capacity (AC), plant available water capacity (PAWC), relative field capacity (RFC), Dexter's (S), and structural stability index (SSI)], and dynamic SPQ indicators [field saturated hydraulic conductivity (K0), water-conducting macroporosity (εma), and...

Quantitative Assessment of Soil Physical Quality in Northern China Based on S-theory Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Yang,Dejun; Bian,Zhengfu; Zhang,Kefeng; Xiong,Jibing; Lei,Shaogang.
ABSTRACT Quantitative assessment of soil physical quality is of great importance for eco-environmental pollution and soil quality studies. In this paper, based on the S-theory, data from 16 collection sites in the Haihe River Basin in northern China were used, and the effects of soil particle size distribution and bulk density on three important indices of theS-theory were investigated on a regional scale. The relationships between unsaturated hydraulic conductivityKi at the inflection point and S values (S/hi) were also studied using two different types of fitting equations. The results showed that the polynomial equation was better than the linear equation for describing the relationships between -log Ki and -logS, and -log Kiand -log (S/hi)2; and clay...

Pedotransfer functions to estimate water retention parameters of soils in northeastern Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Barros,Alexandre Hugo Cezar; Lier,Quirijn de Jong van; Maia,Aline de Holanda Nunes; Scarpare,Fábio Vale.
Pedotransfer functions (PTF) were developed to estimate the parameters (α, n, θr and θs) of the van Genuchten model (1980) to describe soil water retention curves. The data came from various sources, mainly from studies conducted by universities in Northeast Brazil, by the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) and by a corporation for the development of the São Francisco and Parnaíba river basins (Codevasf), totaling 786 retention curves, which were divided into two data sets: 85 % for the development of PTFs, and 15 % for testing and validation, considered independent data. Aside from the development of general PTFs for all soils together, specific PTFs were developed for the soil classes Ultisols, Oxisols, Entisols, and Alfisols by...

Physical and chemical soil quality index in irrigated acai plantations, eastern amazon, Brazil Agrociencia
Lucio,Francisco A. do Carmo; Lima,Herdjania Veras-de; Fernandes,Antonio Rodrigues; Oliveira,Pedro D. de; Ramos,Edson M. Leal Soares.
Knowledge of the soil quality in acai (Euterpe oleracea Mart.) plantations is very important to the northern region of Brazil because it is a native species with high economic value. The aim of this study was to evaluate the physical and chemical quality of a Yellow Latosol in an irrigated acai plantation by determining the soil quality index (SQI). the soil was classified as dystrophic Yellow Latosol with medium texture. The water retention curve and soil penetration resistance were determined using 45 undisturbed samples obtained at 0.1 and 0.3 m depth and distributed across two transects. For SQI determination, 15 soil quality indicators at a depth of 0.1 m were evaluated: soil bulk density (Bd); total porosity (TP); macroporosity (Map); penetration...
