Cooling parameters for fruits and vegetables of different sizes in a hydrocooling system Scientia Agricola
Teruel,Bárbara; Kieckbusch,Theo; Cortez,Luis.
The cooling of fruits and vegetables in hydrocooling system can be a suitable technique. This work aimed to define cooling time for fruits and vegetables of different sizes, presenting practical indexes that could be used to estimate cooling time for produce with similar characteristics. Fruits (orange melon-Cucumis melo, mango-Mangifera indica, guava-Psidium guajava, orange-Citrus sinensis Osbeck, plum-Prunus domestica, lime-Citrus limon, and acerola-Prunus cerasus) and vegetables (cucumber-Cucumis sativus, carrot-Daucus carota, and green bean-Phaseolus vulgaris), were cooled in a hydrocooling system at 1°C. The volume of fruits and vegetables ranged between 8.18 cm³ and 1,150.35 cm³, and between 13.06 cm³ and 438.4 cm³, respectively. Cooling time varied...

Modification and performance evaluation of a dual-function okra processing device CIGR Journal
BELLO, SEGUN RAPHAEL.
The performance evaluation of a dual-function device for slicing and drying Okra developed at the Federal College of Agriculture, Ishiagu Nigeria was carried out and reported.  The device was designed to slice and dry okra in one single-sequence operation. The physical characteristics of crop sample were investigated, characterised and processed in the device to determine their performance under steady state process conditions. The effects of the modified machine on crop processing were also investigated. The results shows that the mean equivalent diameters for each okra sample categorized as A, B and C are; 24. 54mm, 19.20mm and 15.79mm respectively. The slenderness ratios and sphericity determined for each of the three samples were; 3.04, 3.11, 2.79 and...

Determination of some engineering properties, proximate composition and phytochemical properties of African star apple (chrysophyllum albidum) CIGR Journal
Isa, John.
African star apple (Chrysophyllum albidum) is a popular tree in tropical region with all the parts used for food and medicinal purposes. This study focused on the determination of some physical properties, mechanical properties, proximate composition, and phytochemical properties of the fruit. The experiment was conducted using standard procedures. Results for the physical properties of the fruits have values as follows: length per fruit 3.41 – 5.53 cm, width per fruit 3.31 – 5.08 cm, and thickness per fruit 2.93 – 4.73 cm, respectively. The density was found to be 1.073 gcm-3. The volume, angle of repose, geometric mean diameter, arithmetic mean diameter, sphericity was 47.55 cm3, 4.74 cm3, 4.13 cm3, 4.85 cm3 and 0.88 cm3 respectively. The seed...

Comparative performance evaluation of three coconut cracking devices with conventional cracking technique CIGR Journal
BELLO, SEGUN RAPHAEL.
Performance evaluations of three coconut cracking devices was carried out and its results compared with the conventional (hand cracking technique) of hitting on hard surface. The three devices include a punch-split device, an impact-split device and hydraulic press split device which were developed at the Department of Agricultural & Bioenvironmental Engineering Technology, Federal College of Agriculture, Ishiagu.  Each technique was evaluated for output capacity, cracking efficiency, ergonomics, and time required to crack a unit of different grades of coconut. The average cracking efficiency for punch split was 87.09 per cent with a range of 86.76 to 95.00 per cent, impact split efficiency varied from 83.33 to 95.00 per cent with the average of...

Effect of moisture content variation on some physical properties of Achi seeds CIGR Journal
Oji, Irouwa; Asoegwuand, S.N.; Okereke, C.D..
The physical properties of Achi seeds were determined as a function of moisture content in the range of 12.5% to 24% dry basis (average range of Achi seed between eating and harvesting) to provide information for the design of processing, handling, harvesting and storage equipment and facilities. The average equivalent diameter was found to increase from 12.31 mm at 12.5% d.b moisture content to 12.62 mm at 24% d.b moisture content; geometric mean diameter of 9.99 mm at 12.5% moisture content to 10.37 mm at 24% moisture content. At that range of moisture content investigated, the sphericity increased from 47.80% to 48.82%; the aspect ratio from 0.761 to 0.765; the volume from 977.4 mm3 to 1053.89 mm3; surface area from 313.6 mm2 to 337.66 mm2; square mean...
