Fertility Island Formation and Evolution in Dryland Ecosystems Ecology and Society
Ridolfi, Luca; Politecnico di Torino; luca.ridolfi@polito.it; Laio, Francesco; Politecnico di Torino; francesco.laio@polito.it.
Vast dryland regions around the world are affected by the encroachment of woody vegetation, with important environmental and economical implications. Grassland-to-shrubland conversions are often triggered by disturbance of grassland vegetation, and the consequent formation of barren areas prone to erosion-induced nutrient losses. Inhibition of encroachment by erosion-induced depletion of soil nutrients contributes to the emergence of highly heterogeneous landscapes with shrub-dominated fertility islands surrounded by nutrient-poor bare soil. Here, we develop a process-based simplistic model thataccounts for the two competing processes of resource depletion and shrub encroachment by a non-linear diffusion mechanism. The proposed model is able to generate...

THE TOPPLING OF AN IRRIGATION CENTER PIVOT SUBMITTED TO WIND ACTION EFFECTS REA
Schmidt,Edomir M.; Meira Junior,Agenor D. de; Pedrali,Patricia C.; Valdiero,Antonio C.; Thesing,Nelson J..
ABSTRACT This research aims to improve the study about the stability of truss structures used in pivot irrigation, widely used due to the growing demand for food production, when submitted to wind effects. Specifically, it aims to verify the maximum wind speed supported by an irrigation center pivot structure when submitted to the load effects caused by wind gusts perpendicular to the equipment. In order to determine these forces and their effects on the irrigation equipment, computational numerical investigations were carried out using finite element bar models validated by measuring the natural frequency of the equipment in the field. A span was designed based on the existing standards in Brazil and the dynamic response of the structure was examined...

SOIL COMPACTION AND THE STABILITY OF LEVEES OF AQUACULTURE PONDS REA
Magalhães,Esner R. S.; Freitas,Carlos E. de C.; Neves Junior,Afrânio F.; Silva Filho,Francisco C. da.
ABSTRACT The aim of this work was to evaluate the effects of variations in soil compaction on the stability of the slope embankments of fish farms used in aquaculture. Computational modeling was performed using the RocScience Slide 6.0 program, simulating filling scenarios, fast lowering and stationary regimes for the full operation of the fish farms. The data used in these simulations were obtained from soil characterization tests in the laboratory. The geometry of the levees, the inclination of the slopes and the crest width and height, also necessary for modeling, were obtained from field data and technical projects. The modeling generated a safety factor (SF) for the upstream and downstream slopes of the levees, considering different upstream slopes,...

Stabilization of confined beef cattle manure: characteristics of produced fertilizers REA
LORIN,HIGOR E. F.; COSTA,MÔNICA S. S. DE M.; COSTA,LUIZ A. DE M.; PEREIRA,DERCIO C.; CARNEIRO,LEOCIR J..
ABSTRACT The growing demand for animal protein is directly related to the feedlot system of animals and their assumptions, such as the waste management. The characterization of the final products becomes an important factor in decision making by one or by other process. The objective was highlight characteristics that fertilizers present due to the used of stabilization process, by the principal component analysis. For the manure stabilization we realized three aerobic processes, composting, vermicomposting and natural decomposition, and one anaerobic, the anaerobic digestion. These processes produced the compost, the vermicompost, the decomposed manure and the biofertilizer. Fertilizers produced were analyzed by means of seventeen chemical and...

Clonal stability of latex yield in eleven clones of Hevea brasiliensis Muell. Arg. Genet. Mol. Biol.
Omokhafe,K.O.; Alika,J.E..
Eleven Hevea brasiliensis clones were evaluated for clonal stability of latex yield. A randomized complete block design was used with four replicates, two locations, seven years and three periods per year. Stability analysis was based on clone x year and clone x year x location interactions. Five stability parameters viz environmental variance, shukla's stability variance, regression of clonal latex yield on environmental index, variance due to regression and variance due to deviation from regression were applied. There was significant clone x environment effect at the two levels of interaction. Among the eleven clones, C 162 was outstanding for clonal stability and it can serve as donor parent for stability alleles. Three clones (C 76, C 150 and C 154)...

Contributions of weather variables for specific adaptation of rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis Muell.- Arg) clones Genet. Mol. Biol.
Priyadarshan,P.M..
The specific adaptation of 15 rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) clones was assessed by analyzing yield during a normal year (1997-98) and a year (1998-99) in which the yield was exceptional. Differences in yield in response to changes in weather conditions over the years were evident with clones RRII 203, RRIM 703, PB 5/51 and PB 235 which all exhibited a negative trend with increasing wind velocity during 1997-98, these clones also exhibited a negative correlation with minimum temperature during 1998-99. The prominent yield differences across the years made selection based on both yield and stability inevitable through computing weather variables and environmental index as covariant. To determine the contribution of variable(s) to genotype-environment (GE)...

A new approach for obtaining rapid uniformity in rice (Oryza sativa L.) via a 3x x 2x cross Genet. Mol. Biol.
Xing,Shaochen; Cai,Yuhong; Zhou,Kaida.
A triploid (2n = 3x = 36) rice plant was obtained by screening a twin seedling population in which each seed germinated to two or three sprouts that were then crossed with diploid plants. One diploid plant was chosen among the various F1 progenies and developed into an F2 population via self-pollination. Compared with the control variety Shanyou 63, this F2 population had a stable agronomical performance in field trials, as confirmed by the F-test. The stability of the F2 population was further substantiated by molecular analysis with simple sequence repeat markers. Specifically, of 160 markers assayed, 37 (covering all 12 chromosomes) were polymorphic between the parental lines. Testing the F1 hybrid individually with these markers showed that each PCR...

Clonal stability of tree dryness in Hevea brasiliensis Muell. Arg. Genet. Mol. Biol.
Omokhafe,K.O..
Clonal stability of tree dryness was evaluated in eleven clones of Hevea brasiliensis at the Rubber Research Institute of Nigeria. The experimental design was the randomized complete block with three replicates and ten trees per replicate. The clones were evaluated in three locations. Four stability parameters were applied. The stability parameters were: environmental variance, regression index, variance due to regression, and Shukla's stability variance. Clone C 202 was outstanding for clonal stability and could be useful for further studies and genetic improvement of tree dryness. Other four clones (C 76, C 150, C 159 and RRIM 600) were also stable.

Diversity and stability of fishes (Teleostei) in a temporary river of the Brazilian semiarid region Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Medeiros,Elvio S.F.; Maltchik,Leonardo.
The effects of hydrological disturbances by flooding and drought on the diversity and stability in a temporary river fish community in the Brazilian semiarid region were analyzed over the 1996 hydrological cycle. Twelve collections of fishes were made during the wet and dry phases, and 789 individuals of 16 species were collected. Diversity was measured using Simpson's Index (S) and community stability was analyzed by the variation in abundance using Kendall's W concordance test. Fish diversity in the Taperoá river was subjected to hydrological disturbances by flooding and drought. During the wet phase the diversity was higher (S = 0.855) than during the dry phase (S = 0.771). The community was considered stable during the whole annual hydrological cycle...

Stability of some stationary solutions to the forced KdV equation with one or two bumps ArchiMer
Chardard, Frederic; Dias, Frederic; Nguyen, Hai Yen; Vanden-broeck, Jean-marc.
Free-surface flows past submerged obstacles in a channel are considered. The fluid is assumed to be inviscid and incompressible and the flow to be irrotational. The first-order approximation of long nonlinear surface waves over one or two bumps results in a forced Korteweg-de Vries (fKdV) equation. Solutions of the stationary fKdV equation are constructed and their stability is studied, either analytically or numerically. These various solutions include solitary waves over a single bump, solitary waves with two humps over a double bump, table-top solutions over a double bump and fronts.

Modèles autorégressifs à changements de régimes markoviens. Applications aux séries tempo-relles de vent ArchiMer
Ailliot, Pierre.
In this thesis, several original Markov switching autoregressive model are proposed for wind time series. The first chapter is devoted to a theoretical study of these models. We focus mainly on the problems of the numerical calculation of the maximum likelihood estimators, of the asymp-totic behavior of these estimators and finally of model selection and validation. In the second chapter, we propose various Markov switching autoregressive model to describe the evolution of the wind in a fixed point, and then in the third chapter its space-time evolution. For each suggested model, we check the physical interpretability of the various parameters, and their capacity to simulate realistic artificial sequences. The obtained results are compared to those...

The relative importance of environmental stochasticity, interspecific interactions, and observation error: Insights from sardine and anchovy landings ArchiMer
Hosack, Geoffrey R.; Trenkel, Verena; Dambacher, Jeffrey M..
Long-term time series of sardine and anchovy landings often suggest negative dependence between these species, and an array of mechanisms have been proposed as explanations. We reduce these propositions to four basic hypotheses of (1) independence, (2) correlated process noise, (3) interspecific interactions, and (4) correlated observational error. We use a Bayesian approach to develop priors for parsimonious state space models with both process noise and observation error that represent each of these hypotheses, and apply this approach to five long-term time series of landings collected from the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Model comparison criteria suggest that the hypothesis of correlated process noise has the broadest support, where the temporal...

Hydrate dissolution as a potential mechanism for pockmark formation in the Niger delta ArchiMer
Sultan, Nabil; Marsset, Bruno; Ker, Stephan; Marsset, Tania; Voisset, Michel; Vernant, Antoine-mathieu; Bayon, Germain; Cauquil, Eric; Adamy, J.; Colliat, J. L.; Drapeau, D..
Based on acquired geophysical, geological and geotechnical data and modeling, we suggest hydrate dissolution to cause sediment collapse and pockmark formation in the Niger delta. Very high-resolution bathymetry data acquired from the Niger delta reveal the morphology of pockmarks with different shapes and sizes going from a small ring depression surrounding an irregular floor to more typical pockmarks with uniform depression. Geophysical data, in situ piezocone measurements, piezometer measurements and sediment cores demonstrate the presence of a common internal architecture of the studied pockmarks: inner sediments rich in gas hydrates surrounded by overpressured sediments. The temperature, pressure and salinity conditions of the studied area have allowed...

Environment outweighs the effects of fishing in regulating demersal community structure in an exploited marine ecosystem ArchiMer
Mérillet, Laurene; Kopp, Dorothee; Robert, Marianne; Mouchet, Maud; Pavoine, Sandrine.
Global climate change has already caused bottom temperatures of coastal marine ecosystems to increase worldwide. These ecosystems face many pressures, of which fishing is one of the most important. While consequences of global warming on commercial species are studied extensively, the importance of the increase in bottom temperature and of variation in fishing effort is more rarely considered together in these exploited ecosystems. Using a 17‐year time series from an international bottom‐trawl survey, we investigated co‐variations of an entire demersal ecosystem (101 taxa) with the environment in the Celtic Sea. Our results showed that over the past two decades, biotic communities in the Celtic Sea were likely controlled more by environmental variables...

Rotavirus VLP2/6: a new tool for tracking rotavirus in the marine environment ArchiMer
Loisy, Fabienne; Atmar, Robert L.; Cohen, Jean; Bosch, Albert; Le Guyader, Soizick.
The potential of rotavirus 2/6-virus-like-particles (VLP2/6) for use as tracers in the marine environment was investigated. The stability of bovine rotavirus (strain RF) and VLP2/6 in natural seawater at 25degreesC for six days was studied. ELISA and western blot methods were used to quantify the particles. The rates of decline of rotavirus particles and VLP2/6 were similar (approximately 0.5 log 10 per day). Western blot analysis showed that the integrity of capsid proteins VP2 and VP6 was conserved during the incubation time. These results demonstrate that VLP2/6 particles have the same stability in seawater as rotavirus particles. Thus, VLP2/6 can be used as a tracer, which should be of particular value for studying the fate of rotavirus particles in...
