A study was conducted to evaluate variations of digestive enzyme activities in Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone) reared in commercial ponds under semi-intensive conditions. Shrimp were collected at each body weight increase of 2 g. As the shrimp grew (2-12 g), significant increases in the activities of lipase and chymotrypsin were observed. The total protease activity decreased from 6 g onwards. Trypsin activity showed a peak at 6 g and amylase activity increased two-fold after 2 g. Additionally, the stomach contents were analysed microscopically for shrimp between 2 and 10 g. Plant matter contributed above 30% of the total stomach content in 6-, 8- and 10-g shrimp. Detritus represented 58% and 62% of the total stomach content in 2- and 4-g shrimp,... |

In the northeastern Atlantic, adult sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) is one of largest fish living on the shelf, and this species has important commercial value. However, pelagic trawl fisheries that target sea bass have negative operational interactions with common dolphins (Delphinus delphis). Our goal was to determine the diet of adult sea bass in the Bay of Biscay from stomachcontent and stable-isotope analyses, and explore the dietary overlap between sea bass and common dolphins. We found that sea bass primarily target small pelagic fish, most notably mackerel (Scomber scombrus), scads (Trachurus spp.), anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus), and sardine (Sardina pilchardus). These four species also dominated the diets of common dolphins. This overlap in... |

Considering the filtration capacity of mussels to qualitative particle selection, our study focused directly on ingested species by assessing mussel stomach content of various size classes (1-5 cm) over a year (August 97-June 98) rather than monitoring seawater samples. Different size of mussels (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 cm in length) was sampled monthly from the sides of fish cage floats in Urla-Izmir. Stomach contents were analyzed under microscope and different plankton species were grouped taxonomically. Bacillariophycea, Dinophyceae, Oxyphceae, Euglenophyceae as phytoplanktonic species were observed in the stomach contents of mussels as well as zooplanktonic species including Ciliata, Cladocera, Copepod, bivalve and gastropod larvae. Over the sampling period,... |

A large complex of artificial reefs was deployed in the Bay of Marseilles, North-Western Mediterranean, for the enhancement of commercial fisheries stocks. Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope and stomach content analyses were performed on 23 fish species collected on the artificial reefs to assess their trophic position and feeding behaviour. Results indicated that fish diets were not modified on the artificial reefs compared to natural environments, nor was the structure of their trophic network. Artificial reefs, with their complex design, provide diverse and abundant food sources for fishes. Ranges of delta C-13 and delta N-15 of artificial reef fishes were comparable to those recorded in natural Mediterranean environments, with a similar trophic... |

This paper is a study of the feeding ecology of Macrouridae. After Data on their taxonomy and on the stomach contents, the author gives the results obtained: coefficient of vacuity, indication of a prey frequency, percentage in number and in weight, the mean number of prey per stomach, the mean weight of the prey, the alimentary coefficient of a prey. The diet of every species of Macrouridae and the characteristics of feeding in these species are described. He concludes with considerations on the Macrouridae in the ocean and their geographical distribution, and on the deep feeding chain, especially the trophic role of different groups of preys. It is thought that, in the Macrouridae, the alimentary diet is little specialized, and based on benthic and... |

Compound indices are often used in the analysis of fish stomach contents to characterize diet. Five of these indices, combining two or three measures of prey importance: weight, abundance and frequency of occurrence, are mathematically compared in this work. Data from a feeding study of sparid fish show that different indices can produce different results. Four classifications of food, in terms of preferences, are applied to Sparidae, compared and discussed. A new method of classifying the prey of fish into groups is proposed. It characterizes the main items in the diet, whatever feeding index is chosen for the analysis. |

Background Most of the 29 Siganidae species are widely distributed through the Indo-Pacific area. In New Caledonia, these family was represented by 12 species. The present report is the first record of Siganus randalli in New Caledonian waters and provide information on its diet. Methods Three specimens of Siganus randalli were caught in shallow mangrove waters of the southern part of New Caledonia. Their stomach contents and isotopic signatures (carbon and nitrogen) were analyzed and compared to others siganids species. Results and conclusion This note provides the most southerly record of the rabbitfish Siganus randalli, which extends its distribution range by 1200 km southward and 1300 km southwest. The data on its diet, when compared with other... |

Benthic communities of the Río de la Plata estuary and their trophic link with Micropogonias furnieri, Paralonchurus brasiliensis, Menticirrhus americanus, Cynoscion guatucupa, Macrodon ancylodon and Umbrina canosai, six species of the Sciaenidae Family, were studied. Benthic composition was characterized using 122 sampling sites between 1999 and 2005. Multivariate and univariate statistical tools were used to analyze diversity, abundance and biomass patterns. A total of 370 taxa were found at the study area. Four areas were established using benthic composition: Inner Río de la Plata (RdP), middle RdP, outer RdP and Marine zone. Higher abundance (9,877 ind/m2) and biomass (1,456.8 g/m2) values were found at middle RdP. Nephtys fluviatilis, Heteromastus... |

La comunidad circalitoral de Mytilus platensis presenta dos tipos de tramas tróficos; una que depende de la producción primaria fitoplanctónica y otraíde los detritos orgánicos en sedimentos. (Penchaszadeh,1971 a). |
