EFFECT OF THE MIST MICRO-SPRAY TIME ON PHOTOSYNTHETIC SPATIAL HETEROGENEITY OF GRAPE CANOPY REA
Zheng,Ming; Bai,Yungang; Zhang,Jianghui; Liu,Hongbo; Ding,Ping.
ABSTRACT In grape, high temperatures and low humidity prolong midday depression of foliar photosynthesis and dramatically reduce fruit yield. In this study, we explored the effects of various mist micro-spray treatments on grape photosynthesis at a test site in Shanshan County (N, 42.91°; E, 90.30°), Turpan, Xinjiang, China. We tested four different mist micro-spray durations including 1 h (WP1), 2 h (WP2), 3 h (WP3), and 0 h (CK). WP1, WP2, and WP3 affected canopy air temperature and humidity for 5 h, 7 h, and 9 h, respectively. At 12:30, WP1, WP2, and WP3 had the strongest cooling effect and altered temperature by −5.12 °C, −5.09 °C, and −5.17 °C respectively. The relative chlorophyll content was higher in the upper than the lower canopy leaves. There...

Coping with branch excision when measuring leaf net photosynthetic rates in a lowland tropical forest ArchiMer
Verryckt, Lore T.; Van Langenhove, Leandro; Ciais, Philippe; Courtois, Elodie A.; Vicca, Sara; Peñuelas, Josep; Stahl, Clément; Coste, Sabrina; Ellsworth, David S.; Posada, Juan M.; Obersteiner, Michael; Chave, Jérôme; Janssens, Ivan A..
Measuring leaf gas exchange from canopy leaves is fundamental for our understanding of photosynthesis and for a realistic representation of carbon uptake in vegetation models. Since canopy leaves are often difficult to reach, especially in tropical forests with emergent trees up to 60 m at remote places, canopy access techniques such as canopy cranes or towers have facilitated photosynthetic measurements. These structures are expensive and therefore not very common. As an alternative, branches are often cut to enable leaf gas exchange measurements. The effect of branch excision on leaf gas exchange rates should be minimized and quantified to evaluate possible bias. We compared light‐saturated leaf net photosynthetic rates measured on excised and intact...

Reduction of photosynthesis before midday depression occurred: leaf photosynthesis of Fagus crenata in a temperate forest in relation to canopy position and a number of days after rainfall OAK
Koyama, Kohei; Kikuzawa, Kihachiro.
We investigated an effect of canopy position and a number of days after rainfall on reduction of photosynthetic rate in a Fagus crenata forest in summer 2008, during days when midday depression was not apparent. We compared in situ photosynthetic rate and photosynthetic rate that was calculated by photosynthetic light response curves measured in the morning. The ratio, in situ photosynthesis divided by the curve-estimated value, declined towards the end of each day for the upper leaves, but not for the lower leaves. Total photosynthesis was reduced only for the upper leaves by 12% during 5 days after the rainfall.

Leaf gas exchange differences between males and females of yerba-mate PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Rakocevic, Miroslava; Medrado, Moacir José Sales; Lavoranti, Osmir José.
A preliminary study was developed on leaf gas exchange properties of males and females in yerbamate (Ilex paraguariensis St. Hil.), planted in open growth conditions. The photosynthesic photon flux density (PPFD) on leaf level, stomatal conductance (gs), net photosynthesis (A), transpiration (E), and leaf temperature (Tl) was measured during the biennial production period: in the summer during the fruit ripening when there is a pause in its growth (January, February), spring  sprouting (November) and autumn sprouting (March, Jun). The measurements have been taken in different tree crown positions (inside, exterior and tips). First indications of sex physiological  dimorphism in yerba-mate have been shown.  Conductance was superior on female plants, with...

Quality of yerba-mate leaves originating from male and female plants PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Rakocevic, Miroslava; Medrado, Moacir José Sales; Lavoranti, Osmir José; Valduga, Alice Teresa.
The aim of this study was to assess the taste of beverage prepared from yerba-mate (Ilex paraguariensis) leaves, originated from male and female plants, by taking into account leaf gas exchange and the content of macro-and-trace-elements. Ecophysiological, chemical and sensorial properties were evaluated in one of the sprouting phases and in two fruit ripening phases. Male and female plants did not differ in fresh and dry matter production per plant, nor in the content of micro- and trace elements. However, female plants showed higher leaf net photosynthesis (A) and stomatal conductance (gs) than male plants. The beverage prepared with male plant leaves was less bitter than that prepared with female plant leaves, especially when leaves from the branch tips...

Water relations in physic nut according to climatic seasonality, in semiarid conditions PAB
Rodrigues,Bruno Monteiro; Arcoverde,Gabriela Burle; Antonino,Antônio Celso Dantas; Santos,Mauro Guida.
The objective of this work was to determine the effect of climatic seasonality on physic nut (Jatropha curcas), in field, under semiarid climate conditions. Stomatal conductance (g s), transpiration (E), soluble leaf carbohydrates (SLC), free amino acids (FAA) and total proteins (TP) were measured in leaves, in a commercial plantation in Northeast Brazil, during the summer and autumn. Plants showed high g s and E, as well as SLC, FAA and TP contents in the summer, which gradually decreased with the lower temperatures and photosynthetically active radiation during the autumn, despite the higher water availability. Even in conditions of adequate water availability, the combination of low temperatures and reduced light drastically decreased foliar metabolism.

Lima,Breno L. de C.; Silva,Ênio F. de F. e; Santos,Hugo R. B.; Souza,Edivan R. de.
ABSTRACT The use of treated domestic wastewater in agriculture is promising because it contains essential nutrients for crops, especially for cotton plants. Information on leaf gas exchanges helps to understand the responses of plants to different water and nutrient managements, since they directly affect physiological processes. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of potassium fertilization and irrigation with treated wastewater on the gas exchange of naturally colored cotton plants grown in the semi-arid region of the state of Pernambuco, Brazil, providing a reference for evaluations of responses of cotton plants to abiotic factors. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design, in a 5 × 5 factorial arrangement, with...

Gas exchanges in peach palms as a function of the spad chlorophyll meter readings Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Tucci,Maria Luiza Sant'anna; Modolo,Valéria Aparecida; Erismann,Norma de Magalhães; Machado,Eduardo Caruso.
The close relationship between the chlorophyll-meters readings and the total chlorophyll and nitrogen contents in leaves, has allowed their evaluation both in annual and perennial species. Besides, some physiological events such as the CO2 assimilation have also been estimated by chlorophyll meters. This work was carried out aiming to evaluate the gas exchanges of peach palms as a function of the chlorophyll SPAD-Meter readings. Three year-old peach palms from Yurimaguas, Peru were studied in Ubatuba, SP, Brazil, spaced 2 x 1 m in area under a natural gradient of organic matter which allowed four plots to be considered, according to the peach palms leaves colors, from light yellow to dark green. The SPAD readings and the stomatal frequency of leaflets were...

Gas exchange of the umbu tree under semi-arid conditions Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Lima Filho,José Moacir Pinheiro.
A study was carried out at Embrapa Semi-Árido, Petrolina-PE, Brazil, aiming to understand the gas exchange process of the umbu tree (Spondias tuberosa Arr. Cam.) in the dry and rainy seasons. Stomatal conductance, transpiration, photosynthesis and internal CO2 concentration were obtained with a portable infrared gas analyzer (IRGA). During the dry season the umbu tree showed a much lower stomatal conductance early in the morning, as soon as the vapor pressure deficit increased, apparently affecting CO2 assimilation more than transpiration. The highest values were detected around 6:00 am but decreased to the lowest points between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. During the rainy season, however, stomatal conductance, transpiration and photosynthesis were significantly...

Leaf micronutrient concentrations and potential photosynthesis in Ochroma pyramidale established in a degraded land Acta Amazonica
MARENCO,Ricardo A.; VIEIRA,Gil; GONÇALVES,José F. de C..
In the Brazilian Amazon, large areas of abandoned lands may revert to secondary forest. In the process, pioneer tree species have an important role to restore productivity in old fields and improve environmental conditions. To determine potential photosynthesis (Apot), stomatal conductance (g), transpiration (E), and leaf micronutrient concentrations in Ochroma pyramidale (Cav. ex Lam.) Urban a study was carried out in the Brazilian Amazon (01o 51' S; 60o 04' W). Photosynthetic parameters were measured at increasing [CO2], saturating light intensity (1 mmol (photons) m-2 s-1), and ambient temperature. The rate of electron-transport (J), Apot, and water-use efficiency (WUE) increased consistently at increasing internal CO2 concentration (Ci). Conversely,...
