Burial of submarine telecommunication cables: Use of ROV. ArchiMer

The development of telecommunications and in particular the constantly increasing demand of digital services make the submarine telecommunication cables very strategic and the users of these services very sensitive to interruptions or degraded quality. Then, the main cause of faults on submarine telecommunication cables is trawler or anchor damage. Therefore, once the route has been finalized, only a good quality of burial can reduce the risks linked to these external aggressions. The tools used to-day by France Telecom for burial are: a standard sea-plough, with a share, towed by the cableship simultaneously to the laying operation; ROVs (SCARAB) to post-lay bury cables by jetting, repair buried cables and rebury the cable after repair.

The mechanical behaviour of sediments is usually studied from laboratory core analyses which do not take into account the real state of in-situ stresses. Therefore, the aimed purpose is presently to determine the in-situ geotechnical properties which mainly depend on the relationship between fine-grained particles and intergranular fluids. At IFREMER, these achievements have been pursued in the framework of 2 scientific program: "Nodules and Sedimentary Processes and Instability on Slopes, for which surficial measurements were conducted on selected seafloor targets usually pre-defined from high resolution geophysical data." 2 kinds of instrumentation were developed in correlation to 2 different strategies of handling at sea.
